Libby Purves and guests discuss current education stories.
Portsmouth Community Learning
In 2000, schools in Portsmouth received what's been described as a challenging Ofsted report. But rather than send in the advisors with a list of new initiatives, Portsmouth City Council, Portsmouth schools and the University of Sussex decided on a different approach - putting students themselves at the heart of change.
It was a five year project that has just come to an end. The final report has now been published.Ìý
Reporter, Kathleen Griffin went along to Admiral Lord Nelson School in Portsmouth, to talk to the pupils; and to Professor Michael Fielding of the Institute of Education.
Libby Purves talks to Steven Labedz, Head of Admiral Lord Nelson school, who has just been to Hong Kong to disseminate the innovative work that is being done in schools in Portsmouth.

Benefits of Lifelong Learning
The Campaign Alliance for Lifelong Learning - an alliance founded by five organisations representing students, staff and local communities, has recently come together to highlight the plight of the wide range of highly-valued adult education courses that are now under threat.
The Learning and Skills Council partnered with neuropsychologist Dr David Lewis of the MindLab, to prove that learning is one of the most powerful tools to maintaining a healthy and active brain.
Research reveals that although the human brain has been proven to start to deteriorate at an age as young of 20, there is no time limit on our ability to master new knowledge and require new skills. The findings highlight the importance of learning to both maintain and enhance our brains as we grow older.

60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
As the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights approaches, we hear how the articles are being made relevant to school children today.
Libby Purves talks to Jane Ray, illustrator who contributed to the children’s book We Are All Born Free - The Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Pictures.; and to Dan Jones, an Amnesty worker, who has led workshops in schools.
