Libby Purves presents this week's edition of the Learning Curve.

ENGLISH听FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES
With the government鈥檚 new keenness for social integration, and for people from all the different ethnic groups in Britain to speak good English, we discuss why they are also planning to reduce eligibility for free English language courses. A massive campaign against the changes is building, with a huge lobby of parliament planned for next week, and an Early Day Motion with more than 150 MPs signatures. To expand upon this Libby is joined by Bill Rammell: minister for lifelong learning, further and higher education, Roger Kline: head of equality and employment rights at UCU (the University and College Union) and Beatrice Jackson, who鈥檚 been working in the area for more than 30 years.

200th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ABOLITION OF THE SLAVE TRADE
2007 is the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade. The UN has designated it slavery remembrance year. Educating children about the slave trade is highly complex and stereotypes have to be unpicked. We hear from Mike Kaye from Anti-Slavery International, about their educational work. Caroline Swinburne reports from Chelmsford where she visited a Free for All听 workshop about the transatlantic slave trade. These events are running nationwide throughout the year, and include educational workshops and performances of a specially commissioned play entitled Free for All.
