Widening Participation:

Two years ago the DfES put up the money to sponsor Testbed Learning Communities - grass roots level education shaped by and for the people who use it. It was overseen by the National Institute for Continuing Adult Learning, or NIACE, who offered guidance to the voluntary and local authority groups who set these communities up.
In the studio is Sue Meyer Director of Policy and Programmes at NIACE, and in Newcastle is Kate Welch , Chief Executive of Acumen Development Trust, the voluntary organisation behind some Easington testbed learning communities called Aim High.

Bristol University has come up with a novel course aiming to help and inspire mothers who dropped out of formal education due to childcare commitments; their Law Enrichment Programme is run by the Law school with the Meriton Centre, a pupil referral unit for girls between the 13 and 22. Universities UK gave it a Best Practice in Widening Participation award. Sara Parker visited the centre....
Disabled Teachers:
At the end of last year the General Teaching Council for England set up a Taskforce to "eliminate barriers and create opportunities for disabled people who wish to enter teaching". We thought we'd find out how it's going. In the studio with Libby is Professor Barry Carpenter , chair of the The Disabled Teacher Taskforce ; Monica Kreel , Investigations officer at the Disability Rights Commission; and Henry Holmes , who is visually impaired, and currently working as a teaching assistant in a primary school in south west London. He was previously training to be a teacher, but dropped out of his course听
