No longer a spaniel in the works

The Gazette has reported that Roxy, a young cocker spaniel, has been sacked as the Western Isles' first drugs sniffer dog - simply because she had no sense of smell. Tch. Has Roxy been offered retraining and redeployment as an alternative to redundancy or is her career in tatters? No she hasn鈥檛 and yes it is.

This is blatant discrimination against a young worker with a sensory impairment and should be challenged at the European Court of Canine Rights. It鈥檚 an absolute disgrace and highlights that fact that the islands are full of working animals with no organised trade union rights.

I hope that animals will unite behind their oppressed comrade.

Oh dear, what have you done. My two Cockers, Jack and Victor, are avid readers of your blog and now they have withdrawn all cooperation. I now have to not only throw the stick but run after it and bring it back - the dignity of it all. Not only that, they now expect me to run through the woods and chase pheasants, with my dodgy knee and all. I would volunteer their srvices but I am not sure how they are at sniffing for drugs. However, if you have a problem locating cooked chicken these are the boys for the job.

Tony from London

You have to wonder about the selection criteria, don't you? Was poor Roxy not given a test of some kind? I think she could sue for wrongful dismissal here. I hope she has gone to a good home where drug-sniffing is not a requirement.

Jill from EK

Oh dear! What fate awaits the big dug that was seen running off with a neighbour's hen? Was that an infringement of Henly Rights? Or would preventing the big dug from getting his slavering jaws around the silly hen have been an infringement of ITS Canine Rights? And, as for uniting behind an opressed DUG!!!!!! I think not! Really AnnieB, how could you suggest such a thing....

Flying Cat from Rights V Responsibilities

Blame the test, blame the referee, and I would be sure to blame the UN. Guess Roxy had a cold and that condition was not compensated for. Of course, a Labrador would not be held back by such trifles as avian virus, severe pneumonia etc. Oh well, how about Roxy as therapy dog?

mjc from NM,USA

typical of humans-they are all barking mad!!

Glad you've raised the issue of cooked chicken Tony. For far too long now some people in Ness have been keeping chickens on the sly in outbuildings behind their homes. Most will say that the chickens are for personal use and that there's no harm in the occasional joint. Tch. Jill's hit the nail on the head about selection criteria though. All Lewis sheepdogs should go through rigorous assessments from now on with psychometric testing and performance management on a regular basis. mjc can oversee the notes from their mums if they're poorly on the test day. As for FC, how about a bit of solidarity for Roxy? Surely dogs and cats can't only get together when it rains heavily. Relevant training and fair employment practices are what we need. Barking, eh?

Annie B from the usual

were her nostils full of Ocean Spray like tws?

scallowawife from bathroom cabinet

no, I'm ferry sorry, but I have to stand firm on this one, it's a no-brianer: nae dug ever did diddly squat for me, apart from nearly chew me in half. Roxy must face the music without my support.....

Flying Cat from ancient music compendium

What kind of dog was it that left the job half finished, FC? # Tell us more about your close (traumatic) encounter with the doggy kind. The therapy for such horrid experience is to raise a puppy yourself (a black lab would be just right; a golden retriever would be alright if you don't mind brainless pooches).

mjc from NM,USA

nice one fc,missed it earlier!!

carol from where its very windy today

we had a golden retriever once upon a time, mjc, and you are spot on with the brainless adjective - he was ever so much better as a remover than a retriever!

It'll be the Ness sheepdog trials in July. How will they get justice with this sort of prejudice around. What if FC is called for jury service?

Annie B from the usual

Obviously, AnnieB, as a feline of impeccable moral standards, I will do my duty impartially and without fear or favour.....well maybe just a smidgin of fear. Will youse doggy folk stop putting ideas into female biped's head purrleeeeese!

Flying Cat from Islay&JuryDreaming

I went to the sheepdog trials at Scarista a couple of years back - have to say I was very impressed with how the dogs tolerated some very thrawn sheep indeed, patient animals those collies!

annie b, as a country -man i loved the story of the cocker spaniel, the content was typical of island humour and absolutely delightful. thank you.

plough boy from primose farm

Thank you for your interest ploughboy. We must all do what we can to support oppressed dogs like Roxy.

Annie B from the usual

Oh? I'd like to set up a society for the Oppression of Canines Utilising Natural Tendencies. The acronym would have a sort of Irish ring to it, O'..........oh dear...
