The Royal Rave-Up...

Bryan Burnett | 19:50 UK time, Thursday, 28 April 2011

It seems that despite what we claimed on tonight's show, sometimes what you thought was impossible is indeed possible. Julie pointed out that in Holland she really could see for miles and miles and Henri has a friend called Paris and it is possible to throw your arms around her. Dreams can come true if you really want them to on this blog.

Are our regular bloggers excited about the big wedding? I have my doubts, but I do hope you will be able to join us for the unofficial Royal Wedding Disco. What are the songs that Kate and Wills should have at the reception? I'm sure there will be some lyrically appropriate tracks suggested but I also want to hear about the floor fillers that will have Granny and Camilla dancing around their handbags.

It's impossible...

Bryan Burnett | 19:20 UK time, Wednesday, 27 April 2011

Tonight's show was a real laugh as so many of you took the opportunity to let off steam about the acts that made you want to get your money back. Predictably Dylan's live appearances came in for a bit of stick but I think my favourite bit of rock criticism came from Big Don on the text: "Meatloaf was great on CDbut on stage at the SECC last year he just sounded like a old man getting out of bed... huffing puffing and groaning !"

Tomorrow's show will give us all the chance to dream the impossible dream, as it's all about the artists making outrageous claims to fame that can't possible be true. Whether they are Swinging on a Star or Walking In The Air I'll be exposing the fantasists in the pop charts. Did Patsy Cline really fall to pieces? I doubt it. And what about the band who claimed they could see for miles and miles? I suspect strong drink had been taken. Let's keep our feet on the ground and suggest those flights of fantasy and the stars singing about the impossible...

Customer service...

Bryan Burnett | 19:38 UK time, Tuesday, 26 April 2011

I was worried that tonight鈥檚 theme ( artists who have only had one number 1) might be a tough one for the folk listening 鈥榦n the move鈥 as I thought it might be hard to come up with a suggestion without access to reference books. I was wrong as it turned out to be a busy show and it turns out there is no shortage of acts who only topped the charts once. The suggestions ranged from Hot Chocolate to Human League and from Simply Red to Status Quo. There were some shocking injustices revealed tonight. I鈥檓 still upset about the fact that Dusty only had one chart topper and Aqua had three!
鈥 I want my money back鈥 is the great theme that鈥檚 been suggested for Wednesday. I鈥檓 looking for your experiences of the albums you bought that turned out to be deeply disappointing. Was there a single you bought without having heard it and when you got it home it turned out to be a duffer? Were there gigs where you should have been offered your ticket price back? I鈥檇 love to hear your stories.
Most of my experiences have come from things that I鈥檇 read about in the music press and convinced myself I had to have. Inappropriate indie and unwanted americana CDs line my shelves, and because I鈥檇 read a good review in Uncut and believed they were going to be the next big thing. Worst of all 鈥 what was I thinking about when I bought My Chemical Romance? If I had a pound for every time I played that album I鈥檇鈥ave a pound. Refund please!

One on one...

What have Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter, Tainted Love and Telstar got in common? The answer lies in tomorrow's theme which is the artists who only got to top the charts once. There are some surprising names on that list - Dusty Springfield being one of them. Get in touch via the blog and let me know your suggestions of the acts who only had one number one.

Sugar Sugar...

Bryan Burnett | 20:04 UK time, Friday, 22 April 2011

If scoffing all those Easter eggs hasn't already made you feel sick then |Monday's show might tip you over the edge. The theme is 'sugar, spice and all things nice' which should please all of you who have been asking for spices as a theme. The theme is open to interpretation as obviously we all have a different idea of what defines nice.
I don't want it to be two hours of Julie Andrews and The Osmonds so if you can come up with some on theme suggestions that are not overly sweet then all the better.
Hope you all have a lovely holiday weekend.

Songs from the good book....

Bryan Burnett | 19:55 UK time, Thursday, 21 April 2011

We should start tomorrow's show with Genesis and end with Revelation* as the theme for Easter Friday is songs and artists you'd find in the bible. I imagine we'll do Delilah, Lady Madonna and something by Noah and The Whale and even though we played it tonight perhaps we could do another version of Hallelujah. Whether you are a believer or not, delve into the good book and see what pop songs you can find lurking in there. There will be some surprises as always and surely this has got to be Christian's best chance of making the show...

* yes they were a real band and had one hit which reached number 36 in the charts in 2003.

Hold that note...

Bryan Burnett | 20:02 UK time, Wednesday, 20 April 2011

You'll need a powerful set of lungs if you want to sing along with Thursday's show. I'll be asking which warbling wonders have managed to take a deep breath and hold a note the longest. Bill Withers and A-ha have both featured in the record books but what other singers have demonstrated a rather impressive lung capacity. Get in touch with your suggestions and remember I will always love yooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

la la la...

Bryan Burnett | 20:03 UK time, Tuesday, 19 April 2011

We had a Virginia Plain, an Awkward Annie and loads of Kenneths tuned into our frequency tonight. Our 'your name in a song' theme brought in some very funny suggestions. I did smile at the poor girl who had friends sing Una Paloma Blanca every time they saw her and I did like Mike from Fort William's suggestion of My Kinda Girl. Some clever puns on the blog as well so thanks for all that. A busy show.
Tomorrow night it's a load of nonsense - it'songs featuring la la las, dah dah dahs and other made up bits of language

The name of the game...

Bryan Burnett | 20:01 UK time, Monday, 18 April 2011

We've already had a Patricia who has asked for Chris De Burgh's stripper song and Janet in Rutherglen wants to hear her name imortalised in song from the Rocky Horror Show. But is there a number one with Norrie in the title? Is Henri the Eigth your only option and Is there a DC on your CD? The only rule for tomorrow's show is that your name must feature in the title of the song...

Can We Fix It?

Bryan Burnett | 10:00 UK time, Saturday, 16 April 2011

Thanks very much to Vic Galloway for looking after things all this week and Monday's theme is in no way a comment on the fact he was in charge of the studio...but we are looking for your Broken and Fixed songs. From Alexandra Burke and her malfunctioning heels, to Mr Mister and their Broken Wings and no doubt a fair dose of broken hearts - we'll try, with a bit of Hot Chocolate, to Put You Together Again or ask Coldplay to Fix You. And if all fails, it might be a job for Bob the Builder.

Au revoir but not goodbye...

Bryan Burnett | 20:21 UK time, Friday, 15 April 2011

Well, I'm outta here after a thoroughly enjoyable 5 nights doing the show in Bryza's absence. He'll be back and nicely refreshed for you next week after his jollies with a whole batch of great, new themes for you to get stuck into.

As I've said on air, it's been a blast presenting the show. From Royalty to Outer Space, Philosophical to Wild'n'Reckless via Reggae, a lot of classic music and rare gems have been spun for your titillation, delectation and listening pleasure. I'm only sorry I can't play all your requests and mention all your names each night... But hey, you know the nature of the show. It always makes my mind boggle how many people listen and contribute every night, and without you it wouldn't happen.

I'm back to my usual slot on 成人快手 Radio Scotland at 8.05 pm with a live session from new Glasgow indie-pop quintet French Wives on Monday. Hopefully you can join me each week for new music and alternative back-catalogue gems from Scotland and beyond. I'll recognise your names on email, text, facebook and twitter... maybe I'll even play one of your suggestions here and there too.

Anyway, thanks for having me... have a wicked weekend and speak to you all soon.

Go wild... Go wild in the country!

Bryan Burnett | 20:58 UK time, Thursday, 14 April 2011

Tonight was a joyous show celebrating two hours of sweet, reggae vibrations. Thanks for your selections as ever - you reacted in your droves, which was wonderful. Highlights included Max Romeo's 'War Inna Babylon', Althea & Donna's 'Uptown Top-Ranking' Augustus Pablo 'King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown' and pretty much anything by Toots & the Maytals is OK with me. Hope you enjoyed the tracks, whether you're already a fanatic or if it was an introduction to the music.
As we near the end of the week and put 'Get it on' to bed until next Monday when Bryan returns, my producers have graced us with an awesome theme for Friday night... 'Wild 'n' Reckless'! How good is that? Almost all great pop and rock music celebrates youth gone wild, especially the archetypal rockabilly, rock'n'roll, 60's beat, 70's glam, disco, punk and heavy metal... All in all, it's a very broad church of songs about girls, cars, drinking, fighting, dancing and more. It can't help but be fun, fun, fun...
It's the weekend and we all need to let our hair down and cut loose. Get your suggestions in and let's have a party!

Dis Wan Go Boom Down Di Town...

Bryan Burnett | 20:27 UK time, Wednesday, 13 April 2011

Another interesting and eclectic show for our 'Philosophical Songs' theme, and I'm glad all that soul-searching was as upbeat as it was! As usual, you lot offered up an amazing array of diverse tunes about life, the universe and everything. I especially enjoyed Elvis Costello '(What's so funny about) Peace, Love & Understanding?', Talk Talk 'Life's what you make it' and had lots of fun playing Bobby McFerrin 'Don't worry, be happy' and Monty Python.

Thursday's theme may well be my favourite of the week - 'Reggae'. From Bluebeat to Ska to Rocksteady, Roots, Dub, Two-Tone, Ragga and Dubstep... if it's got a sweet vibration and an off-beat, I'm right in there. 2 hours dedicated to Jamaican music, roots and culture is going to be a real treat for all, I hope. It is a genre that can divide people but please do give it a chance as I'm sure you'll find a few crucial tracks you can add to your collection, or remind you of years gone-by and lazy summer days. For some, it may even be a complete introduction to the genre.

As always, YOU choose the music so get the classics like Bob Marley, Toots & the Maytals, Prince Buster, Jimmy Cliff, Lee Perry, UB40 etc in there, but think of some lesser played tracks and artists too. I'm intrigued to know who you'll pick and why. Get skankin' and we'll get it on!

Life is just a bowl of cherries...

Bryan Burnett | 20:19 UK time, Tuesday, 12 April 2011

Well, tonight's show was a stellar success and I was over the moon playing all your interplanetary requests and suggestions. Thank You! There's always going to be a wealth of 'Outer Space' tunes from the classic and well-known through to the obscure... I personally loved 'The Martian Hop' by The Ran-Dells, 'Yuri' by Oi Va Oi and any excuse to play 'Telstar' by The Tornados or 'Flying Saucer Attack' by The Rezillos is fine by me. What a great fun show and in all in celebration of Yuri Gagarin's first journey into space 50 years ago in 1961.
On tomorrow's Get It On it's time to get deep with a new theme - 'Philosophical songs'. Yes, songs about 'life, love, the universe and everything'... that may cover quite a bit of ground, but it's up to YOU where we take this. Do you share your outlook on life with Doris Day's 'Que Sera, Sera' or perhaps the more unusual opinion of 10CC that 'Life Is A Minestrone'? We could grapple with affairs of the heart and play 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love' or how about the artists who tackle the meaning of life in a song, Dylan's 'Blowin' In The Wind' or maybe REM with 'Everybody Hurts'?
Take a moment to yourself, gaze deeply into your navel, stroke that chin and then get in touch... we'll Get It On!"

Higher Than The Sun...

Bryan Burnett | 20:09 UK time, Monday, 11 April 2011

No need to bow or courtsy, but yes Monday's 'Royalty' theme was an absolute hoot. It's always lovely to receive the 'Get it on' call when Queen Bryan is off on his holidays. I'm here all week and delighted as ever to play you a full sonic tapestry available via the 成人快手 audio library, as chosen by YOU. I wondered about how difficult the theme might be, but when you start the cogs turning you realise there are thousands of potential tracks. Particular favourites were The Stranglers and Scott Walker songs 'Duchess', Adam and the Ants 'Kings of the Wild Frontier', Duke Ellington 'Take the A-Train' and BB King 'My baby's comin' home' were also great. Well done you lot... always rising to the challenge! There are some fantastic themes this week, and you'd better get strapped in and ready for take-off for 'Outer Space' on Tuesday. There are plenty of out-of-this-world choices to be made across the history of popular music... 'Walking on the Moon', 'Higher than the sun', 'Telstar', 'Space Oddity' and 'Rocket Man' are all up for grabs, so get involved and get it on!

Fit for a queen...

Bryan Burnett | 19:45 UK time, Friday, 8 April 2011

Thanks for a great week of themes. Wednesday's theme of 'songs with a deeper meaning' was a highlight for me although I could have done without having to explain 'Poison Ivy' to my boss live on air! I'm taking some time off to get over trauma of the above incident so Vic Galloway sits in for me all next week. It's 40 years since Roger Taylor, Brian May, Freddie Mercury and John Deacon formed their band Queen. So on Monday night we're looking for artists and songs with a royal connection. We need Kings, Queens, Princes, Princesses, Dukes, Duchesses and even any maids and butlers are welcome. Would you like to hear The Kinks singing about Victoria, Love & Pride by King or something by Bernard BUTLER? Share your requests linked to members of royalty and Princess Galloway will try and play them Monday night from 6.10pm.

Fresh old songs...

Bryan Burnett | 19:57 UK time, Thursday, 7 April 2011

What are the songs that have stood the test of time? That's the question I'll be asking on Friday night. Thirty years on - what still sounds fresh? Looking back at the number ones from 1981, tracks like Don't You Want Me, tainted Love and Ghost Town still sound as good today as they did then. Others like Being with You and This Ole House maybe haven't worn quite so well!

Part-time pop stars...

Bryan Burnett | 20:04 UK time, Wednesday, 6 April 2011

Well, that was a brilliant show tonight. I thought we got some great tunes in and it was fascinating to hear some of the stories about the meaning behind well known songs. I suspect some of the interpretations were maybe not what the artist had in mind when they wrote the song but isn't that part of the joy of getting into music? Thursday's theme features the artists who have 'done work' for other stars. It could be Stevie Wonder lending his harmonica playing talents, Prince gifting a song or Mick Jones getting behind the producer's chair.

How deep is your song...

Bryan Burnett | 20:06 UK time, Tuesday, 5 April 2011

There is nothing wrong with being a bit shallow now and then but on Wednesday's show we are getting deep. I'm looking for your suggestions of songs that have a deeper meaning. That could be anything from Imagine to Greatest Love of All. Perhaps it's those songs that took two or three listens before you really 'got' it. Maybe it's the ones that took years to figure out. For me it would have to be Mary Chapin Carpenter's Closer and Closer Apart. I just assumed it was a break up song about a couple who still love each other but have decided to split. When she revealed to me the inspiration behind the song it became a totally different song and of course it had a much deeper meaning than I'd read into it. The title came from a phrase that iris Murdoch's husband used to describe the changes in their relationship as he nursed her during her tragic battle with dementia. It's a stunning song and like so much of MCC's work it has layers and layers of meaning.

Rip it up...

Bryan Burnett | 19:55 UK time, Monday, 4 April 2011

This week in 1981 the nation celebrated as Bucks Fizz triumphed in the Eurovision song contest. Although Making Your Mind Up went on to be a number one all over the continent, what we really remember them for is that dress ripping dance routine! For Tuesday's theme I thought we would do a theme of the artists who have been remembered for something other than their music. It might be outlandish outfits, their off stage antics or their other talents which have overshadowed their music. A good example would be Kim Wilde, pop star and gardener. Wouldn't it be a shame if her horticultural achievements eclipsed View From A Bridge and Cambodia?

Talk about a revolution...

Bryan Burnett | 19:59 UK time, Friday, 1 April 2011

It's all about to change on Monday's Get It On. Omar from Edinburgh has been calling for a revolution and emailed with this request: "Following what is happening in the Middle East and North Africa, can we have please a topical show about songs calling for revolutions and protests?"
Now, if we don't get Billy Bragg on with a theme like this then you really will be entitled to storm your stuiod and handcuff yourself to my desk.
