Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 10:26 UK time, Friday, 30 October 2009

themesvid.jpgA big welcome to all the 'first timers who got in touch for Thursday's show. It really was a refreshing show. Saying that, we did miss the 'regulars' so looking forward to getting your emails and blog posts for this week's themes. Monday's theme is courtesy of one of our most prolific contributors so make sure you get behind his theme.
The latest video featuring details of the week's themes is now up on the Get It On homepage...

Monday
Will you go for an Ellis Bextor or perhaps a Cougar Mellencamp? It's double barreled names to kick off the week. Scotch Git suggests this as a theme and with possible tracks from everyone from Mary Chapin Carpenter to Jerry Lee Lewis it's going to be a good show...

Tuesday
At last year's Soundtown, Alva Academy, we ran a session where some of the pupils came up with ideas for Get It On themes. Amy suggested a theme of songs that had to be three minutes or under. Some say it's the perfect length for a pop song. If you agree then lets have your suggestions, but a word of warning -Ìý I will have my stopwatch standing by...

Wednesday
Accapella breakdowns is the theme for Wednesday. That bit on the middle of Somebody To Love, Sweet Dreams, or maybe Girls and Boys by Blur. Start thinking of the bits where the music stops and the spotlight is on the singing...
Ìý
Thursday
Finally - it's bonfire night tonight so lets have your appropriate songs featuring fireworks, bonfires and the like. Rocket man, Boom Bang A Bang and definitely something by Guy Mitchell...

Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 19:07 UK time, Thursday, 22 October 2009

numan.jpgThe themes for next week presented in all their widescreen glory can be found on the Get It On homepage, but here are they are in good old fashioned black and white.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed theme ideas in the past, but if you've never had a go at coming up with a theme then why not have a bash. Email them in to the usual address and who knows, your idea could be enthralling the nation for two hours one night.

Oh, and if you've never even had a song played, then Thursday's show is just for you.

Monday
A new survey reveals that top tunes that wake us up in winter include Eye of the Tiger, Walking on Sunshine and Beautiful Day. I find it hard to believe that Captain Sensible has made it into the top ten but somebody out there wants to wake up to happy talk! What gets you out of bed on a cold, dark morning - that's Monday's theme...

Tuesday
Anarchy in the UK by the Sex Pistols, Elvis doing That's Alright Mama or maybe Take It Easy by The Eagles. Regular blogger, Mike from Shropshire has come up with debut singles as a theme. Who were the acts whose first singles made a big impact on you?

Wednesday
30 years after Gary Numan first appeared on TOTP, synth pop is the theme. The D-50, the DX 7, the Jupiter 8 and the people who played them. The best synthesiser songs of all time is the theme. From Vince Clarke to Calvin Harris, the kings of the keyboards take centre stage.

Thursday
A different kind of debut singles tonight - It's a first time requester special! if you've never had a song played or always been too sacred to get in touch then tonight is just for you. You can call or text during the show, send in an email, post a comment on the blog our check out 'Get It On with Bryan Burnett' on Facebook.

The Stark truth...

Bryan Burnett | 22:26 UK time, Wednesday, 21 October 2009

craighill.jpg

There are not many Radio Scotland programmes that make me bury my head in my hands with sheer embarrassment but today's Stark Talk was one of them. As usual Edi likes to get stuck in there and gets her guests to reveal bits of themselves which they hadn't revealed before. Best bit today was when she asked Craig Hill if his banter with an audience had ever gone horribly wrong. She then probed him on his most embarrassing moment. It was a complete cringe fest. If you've ever worried about saying the wrong thing to someone then listen to Craig's boob and you will realise that your own faux pas was not even worth bothering about. It's excruciating but very, very funny.

Let me also take the time to recommend another couple of Iplayer gems:

Alan Cumming's The Real Cabaret is a ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ 4 documentary which takes a look at the real story behind the film and examines the Berlin cabaret scene of the 1930s. As well as looking at the inspiration for the songs he also goes off in search of a modern day equivalent of Isherwood's experiences. He struggled as did I on my recent visit to Berlin. We booked up for a 'cabaret' night thinking we were going to get all singing, all dancing modern version of the Kit Kat club. What we got was an evening of comedy songs from Germany's answer to Richard Stilgoe. Incomprehensible, and about as funny as a boil on the bum.

The ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ's Electric Proms are well underway and you can see some of the highlights online. Don't miss Kid Adrift's session at the Maida Vale studios. Kid Adrift used to work in our building as an audio trainee and I'm thrilled that he's finally getting recognition for his music. It's a bit weird seeing someone you used to bump into in the canteen being touted by the national press for his winning blend of post-rock and dubstep ( me being such an expert on dubstep!).

Finally it's easy to slag off Robbie Williams, particularly after his starey-eyed X Factor appearance the other week. But you gotta admit that Britain's neediest pop star knows how to work a crowd. Here's the link to catch the highlights of his comeback gig.

Musical relationships....

Bryan Burnett | 12:04 UK time, Tuesday, 20 October 2009

rumours.jpg

I don't know what it was about last night's theme but it seemed to inspire one of our most diverse playlists yet. Your 'sound' suggestions took in everyone from Tommy Steel to Girls Aloud, from Public Enemy to The Buzzcocks. On paper it sounds bonkers but I think
it made a good show. Full details and links to all the artists are available on the Get It On homepage where you can also listen again to last night's show.
Tonight it's 'relationships within bands', a theme inspired by Fleetwood Mac's visit to Glasgow later this week. The breakdown of the various relationships within that band have been well documented over the years. It must have been hell to have been around them at the time
they were all splitting up. But then again they did make some fine music during that period. Maybe the tensions between couples fuel the creative process.
I'll sure we will gets lots of suggestions of loved up couples as well as the ones whose rocky relationships have nearly split up the band! Ones that spring to mind include Blondie, Eurythmics and Deacon Blue. ( The album is great by the way.)
I like to maintain a close working relationship with my production team although not that close if you know what I mean. However, that didn't stop the new boy in the office asking if myself and a certain producer (*** ) were an item! Oh how we laughed. Mind you, at the time we were shouting across the office and arguing about whose turn it was to do the montage....Is it any wonder he thought we were a happily married couple?

Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 20:05 UK time, Thursday, 15 October 2009

producer.jpgThis week's themes are now available to watch as a short video so take a look at our homepage if you want to have a look. Details are also listed below. We had a great mix of tunes last week so let's see what you come up with this week....

Monday:
Denis S writes from Aberdeen where he is a member of the Traditional Music and Song Association of Scotland. For their monthly get together they choose a theme and members have to pick a song to fit the theme. He's admitted they've pinched a few themes from us, so in return we are pinching one of his - Sound. That could be anything from Beautiful Noise, Sound of the Crowd or Bang On The Ear! You decide...

Tuesday:
Fleetwood Mac play in Scotland next week so I thought we would feature 'relationships in bands'. Could there be anything better than being on tour with the one you love or is it a cause of great emotional turmoil in the band? Abba, Eurythmics, Blondie or Deacon Blue. Pop's great relationships are under the spotlight on tonight's show...

Wednesday:
In this business some might say we owe it all to the producers! Aye right. But when it comes to music who are the best producers of all time? Norrie has suggested a theme that pays tribute to the backroom boys. From George Martin to Joe Meek, from Timbaland to Trevor Horn - who is the top talent behind the desk...

Thursday
'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes' 'Bigmouth Strikes Again' or perhaps 'Secret smile'! Something you might find on a face is the theme for Thursday night. Just don't even think about suggesting Captain Beaky...

Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 19:23 UK time, Thursday, 8 October 2009

marie.jpgFrom singing siblings to Careless Memories it promises to be another interesting week on the show. From this week I'll be announcing the themes in an online video which you can watch on the Get It On homepage.
We'll film a new one every Thursday and get them up online in time for the weekend. "You'll need to remember to smarten yourself up on a Thursday then", said one of our online team. Ha! Was she hinting that my usual Mon-Wed attire is not up to scratch? I must admit that when I see my colleagues in TV strolling around the building in their smart shirts and shiny shoes, I am grateful that I can come into the studio in my crumpled jeans and t shirt and not have to worry. Apart from a Thursday that is.

As always I am keen to get as wide a mix as possible for the themes. Whether it's edgy and alternative or straight down the middle of the road, we'll always try and find a space for it on the show. After all we did play Kenneth McKellar and Biffy Clyro on the same show last week.

Monday

Clearly we won't want to miss Marie Osmond's 50th birthday so I thought we would feature singing siblings for tonight's show. It's brothers and sisters who both share a talent like Kylie and Danni, Ray and Dave, Craig and Charlie, Don and Phil....and if you MUST Matt and Luke...

Tuesday

Martin in Dunfermline suggests songs that feature words your kids don't like. So that's anything featuring fab, groovy or waay out! But I thought we might expand the theme and feature bands that make your kids ashamed to know you! And kids - do get in touch and tell us about the items in your mum and dad's CD collection that make you totally embarrassed?

Wednesday

Scotch Git suggests 'memory and recollection' as a theme tonight. So that could Johnny Remember Me, Carless memories, or Too Good to be forgotten. Don't forget to get in touch with your suggestions...

Thursday

Would it have been Elvis in Vegas, The Smiths at the Caird Hall or Spandau Ballet at the Blitz club. What are the best gigs you never got to. The theme has been suggested by Gaie Brown on our Facebook page. Tickets on sale Thursday night at ten past six...

A monster weekend...

Bryan Burnett | 19:00 UK time, Monday, 5 October 2009

view.jpg

After a lovely weekend at the Loch Ness marathon, I can see why the big boss keeps banging on about Inverness.

On our way to the marathon start, we had driven less than ten minutes out of the city centre when I was blown away by the scenery. The picture aboveÌý was taken at around 7am on Sunday morning. I'd have no problems getting up early on a Sunday morning if the views outside the front door looked like that.

The much talked about 'highland hospitality' does exist and one great example were the women who were out in the cold and dark of Sunday morning setting up their steaming urns so they could hand out free tea and coffee to all the runners.

It was a day to remember for the thousands of folk who ran in the marathon,10k and 5k. The number of entrants broke all previous records which meant that in my role as commentator I had to find at least three thousand ways to say 'well done'.

I do have one of those voices that travels as you'll hear if you listen to from my ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Scotland colleague, Jackie O' Brien. I have to apologise to Jackie who spent the day gathering material for her radio report. In every interview she did and over every line she spoke all you can hear is my voice booming out in the background! I really need to get my internal volume control sorted out...

Next week's themes...

whatmakesyousmile626x260a.jpg

Thanks again for another busy week on the show. In particular thanks to all the new people who have joined up to our Facebook page. It seems we have built up a real community of music lovers. If you haven't visited yet then don't be shy - and of course it would be great to get your suggestions along with the ones already up there.
I hope you enjoy this week's themes and if you've got a theme we've never done then get on the email and let me know...

Monday
As ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio Scotland kicks off a season on our relationship with alcohol, we'll be asking you to come up with an exciting alcohol free musical cocktail. Take a couple of unusual ingredients like Rob Thomas and Santana and combine them in an irresistible musical mix. Into that cocktail could go Prince and Sheena Easton...or maybe Debbie harry and Iggy pop? ( Ok it's a duets show but work with me here!)

Tuesday
After last week's songs for your ex, the life long lovers get their turn in the spotlight as the theme is everlasting love. I'll say forever my love? Endless Love or perhaps Forever and Ever? You decide...

Wednesday
Richard Wilson and Raymie in Consett have both suggested unusual words in songs as tonight's theme. Haversack is not a word you find in many hit records but somehow The Pet Shop Boys managed. And then there 's Faith Hill's amazing grasp of Newtonian mechanics when she sings quite convincingly about centrifugal motion. Get out the dictionary and start looking up pop's most unusual words...

Thursday

As part of the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ's Headroom campaign, it's two hours of stress busting music as chosen by you. The songs that make you smile is tonight's theme. From comedy classics to out and out cheeriness, just don't worry, be happy and tune in tonight for the show guaranteed not to give you the blues...
