Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 08:29 UK time, Friday, 2 October 2009

whatmakesyousmile626x260a.jpg

Thanks again for another busy week on the show. In particular thanks to all the new people who have joined up to our Facebook page. It seems we have built up a real community of music lovers. If you haven't visited yet then don't be shy - and of course it would be great to get your suggestions along with the ones already up there.
I hope you enjoy this week's themes and if you've got a theme we've never done then get on the email and let me know...

Monday
As 成人快手 Radio Scotland kicks off a season on our relationship with alcohol, we'll be asking you to come up with an exciting alcohol free musical cocktail. Take a couple of unusual ingredients like Rob Thomas and Santana and combine them in an irresistible musical mix. Into that cocktail could go Prince and Sheena Easton...or maybe Debbie harry and Iggy pop? ( Ok it's a duets show but work with me here!)

Tuesday
After last week's songs for your ex, the life long lovers get their turn in the spotlight as the theme is everlasting love. I'll say forever my love? Endless Love or perhaps Forever and Ever? You decide...

Wednesday
Richard Wilson and Raymie in Consett have both suggested unusual words in songs as tonight's theme. Haversack is not a word you find in many hit records but somehow The Pet Shop Boys managed. And then there 's Faith Hill's amazing grasp of Newtonian mechanics when she sings quite convincingly about centrifugal motion. Get out the dictionary and start looking up pop's most unusual words...

Thursday

As part of the 成人快手's Headroom campaign, it's two hours of stress busting music as chosen by you. The songs that make you smile is tonight's theme. From comedy classics to out and out cheeriness, just don't worry, be happy and tune in tonight for the show guaranteed not to give you the blues...

    Monday:

Scarlett Johansson and David Bowie - Falling Down, could be Bowie's last studio recording!

  • Comment number 3.

    Wed:

The Joker - "Some people call me the pompitus of love."

Steve Miller Band or, I prefer the excellent k d lang version. There does not seem to be a proper definition for pompitus, I think Steve Miller made it up but I suppose we get the idea!

Unforgettable / Nat King Cole & Natalie Cole

  • Comment number 5.

Think wed should be good as long as it doesn't turn into a proclaimersfest. As for thursday, it's only October and we've already this year had a songs that make you laugh night and an uplifting night and here we go again. Funnily enough the music that busts my stress is
of the calming sort and exactly the opposite of what's being suggested in the theme.

  • Comment number 6.

    MONDAY

Has tonight's show got anything at all to do with alcohol? 'Twould appear not. So why mention it? Does the 成人快手 want us to stop drinking? Does the 成人快手 want us to start drinking? Is this not-so-subtle subliminal social engineering? We should be telt!

    >8-D

  • Comment number 7.

There was some chat about doing themes on vices / addictions and Barbara said she would not do it. I di not really understand that but anyway it means that they cannot really plug into the alcohol season I suppose. I am looking forwrad to that season of programmes should be interesting.

  • Comment number 8.

    #7 ?!?

Haven't those themes been done already?

  • Comment number 9.

BRING ME THE SAIR HEID OF ALFREDO GARCIA!

  • Comment number 10.

#8 Dont know but that is what I am sure they said a wee while back. In was in relation to the track Last Cigarette but I could be totally wrong though!

  • Comment number 11.

    Monday

If You Were Me - Elton John and Chris Rea

    #8 - Yup.

#5 - Calm down Paolo. Maybe the team just need more input for new themes. Maybe some of the many Facebookers can come up with a few. Maybe we could use that as a theme. Songs about faces and books!
(Though books/literature as a theme is probably second only to Space).

  • Comment number 12.

    THURSDAY

Tell ye what would bust my stress right now, a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty!

Let's hope the Irish do the right thing! (again)

Between Monday's alcohol deprivation and Thursday's 'Headroom campaign' I'm beginning to feel like a character in an Ira Levin novel.

Freddie and Monserrat for the duet theme.

    DC

  • Comment number 16.

#5 I agree Paolo. I normally select loud tunes to play on the way home from work. I find they're the best stress-busting type.

At the moment, Metallica's version of "Whiskey in the Jar", Slade's "Runaway" and Primal Scream's "Country Girl" feature on my de-stress programme drivetime playlists. Any (or all) of these for Thursday please

    DC in Cellardyke

  • Comment number 17.

Talk about stress. The nerves are jangling here in Rio as we await the Olympic vote.
Might nip down to Copacabana at lunchtime if we make the final vote.
Party time this weekend if we win it.

  • Comment number 18.

That would be great for you. Hope it goes well - will it be a good boost to Brazil ecomomy and all that stuff. Maybe GIO team could go and broadcast from your estate.

Pogues and Kirsty McCall with Fairy Tale of New York

  • Comment number 25.

I know it's not with the 'official' duets theme, but wouldn't it be pure fantastic to open Monday's show with
Spike Jones - Cocktails for Two?

Who could resist a track with a whole stop-chorus of hiccups?!

The city's clamour can never spoil
The dreams of a boy and goil

'Mockingbird' - James Taylor and Carly Simon.

  • Comment number 46.

    Tuesday:

    Moody Blues "For My Lady"

Same song I would have chosen for each of the 34 years we've been together by the way

So, 2016 to be a good PRS year for Duran Duran, then :-)

Well done Rio - the right city won.

  • Comment number 48.

Power Ballad for Tuesday night. Jennifer Rush - Power of Love. (Was given the album from my wife's auntie as a first christmas present in 1985, so has sentimental value)

This will be the last post from ECtheNorthSea, so one less in the "Grumpy Mob" (all will be revealed)

Good luck and best wishes to you all. Hope to cross paths with some of you in the future.

    MONDAY

    'Don't Give Up' - Willie Nelson & Sinead O'Connor

Had you never heard the original you would assume that this was Willie's song. Superb performance.

  • Comment number 51.

    TUESDAY

'Paradise By the Dashboard Light' - Meat Loaf

As Paolo so astutely observes, it would work for all this week's themes.
I'm asking for it on Tuesday as an antidote to all the sugary girly songs with which Bryan and the team will be inundated.
    Especially for the line;

I swore that I would love you to the End of Time,

So now I'm praying for the End of Time to hurry up and arrive.......

  • Comment number 52.

Ellen Foley with the Clash - Hitsville UK, odd combination even though she was going out with Mick Jones, again one that has been asked for a few times.

Loretta Lynn and Jack White - Portland, Oregon slightly odd combination but great track from the Van Lear Rose album

  • Comment number 56.

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair

Don't think colitas feature in any other track, so "Hotel California" by the Eagles please on Wednesday

I don't think Bryan has thought this through. My stress-busting music tends to be insrumental. If I want a laugh it's Jake Thackray or PDQ Bach.

    Some clarity, please?

Mon. ROSETTA - Georgie Fame & Alan Price

Tues. My woman has decided she wants to pick this one. Rachael spent ages yesterday on the computer listening to different versions of this song. This one is her favourite.
MY LOVE IS LIKE A RED RED ROSE - Kenneth McKellar

Wed. PSYCHOMODO - Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel - QUASIMODO
A private joke. In our house if someone says "Quasimodo" we roll on the floor helpless with laughter. Don't ask.

Thurs. WOND'RING ALOUD - Jethro Tull - Brings back memories of being young and madly in love. If that doesn't make you smile you're already dead. A very short song. Less than 2 minutes if you can crowbar it in somewhere.

FOG ON THE TYNE - Lindisfarne - When I'm home it's a local anthem. When I'm away it reminds me of home.

what is the most downloaded song from i tunes not to have been released in the 21sh century? It only reached no.62 in uk singles charts in 1981
but over the years has popped up in various tv programmes and films. It has been used as an anthem for several American sports teams and has one of the famous keyboard intros in rock. It sounds great in the car after a heavy day and for that reason will be my pick for stressbusting night on thursday. Any guesses?

    * David Bowie & Massive Attack - Nature Boy

And finally, there are several remarkable duets/trios on The Imagined Village collaboration, including:

    Hello.

For Monday's show, can I suggest Ciao by Lush. This track features a duet between Miki Berenyi and Jarvis Cocker. It's on Lush's 1996 album Lovelife. Whatever happened to Lush?

For what it's worth, a front runner for most embarrasing duet of all time has to be David Bowie and Bing Crosby's Little Drummer Boy. Or did I secretly like it?

    Cheers.

Carly Simon & James Taylor with "Mockingbird".
    Tuesday - everlasting love
Randy Travis with "Forever and Ever Amen".

    for monday:

Kylie with James Dean Bradfield - Some Kind of Bliss, wholly unlikely collaboration, brilliant single, my last cassingle!

I quite like Robbie Williams. His attempt at It Was a Very good Year was a shocker. However....

Nancy Sinatra and morrissey - Let Me Kiss You is excellent.

    MONDAY COCKTAILS

Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart - Gene Pitney / Marc Almond

I'm old enough (sadly) to remember the original, but I think this is equal to, if not better than, the one by Gene on his own.

Covers versions of this nature could be a theme worth revisiting.
