Blogging Again!!!

I have ended up not having blogged again for a while. I didn't intend to be so long but providence decided otherwise. My health is a relevent factor at such times as these as I am prone to a certain illness which is of a regular kind. Also at times I feel that I suffer from some sort of block in spite of simply blogging. Never mind, though, I still have a notion to be online.

The world, meantime, has continued to move on. I can't help thinking how easy it would be to get out of touch with the daily news items provided by the various media. Indeed can anyone keep up with it all although determined to, world wide or locally.

It is strange how we can get focused on one aspect of the news provision which remains a prominent topic for a shorter or longer spell. For the last number of years Iraq is the news item that gains our attention on tv, radio and the news papers.

It is obvious, taking all into consideration, that these are killing times: bombs,(explosions) and murder. Good intentions thankfully continue bringing many into the fold of civilization and good will.

However, I'm looking forward to a good Summer this year so that we can all bask in the sun all day long: would this be laziness? Not by a long chalk.

And So To A Ship!

Sometimes when we write blogs, we wonder if we are all the time keeping to the rules of island blogging.I know that I require to remind myself of what they actually are; but not at the moment please.

It seems to me that writing of past events is not what is most popular. I found that, for example, writing about the Highland Clearances didn't get get the best results in the event of comments - obviously I had a chip on my shoulder. Something more trendy would have been more in line. But as for myself the past is often the corner stone for the future.

I suppose that these days, more than before we are aware of commerations as regards one thing or another. There must, of course, be a great deal more to remember in the 21st centuary than ever before, and in saying this my attention is focused on the two world wars of the 20th centuary so indellibly imprinted in our history.I suspect that some would prefer to forget episodes such as these, but I won't condemn. Though I don't realish the idea of war more than they, the sacrifice in human terms reach me to the depth of my being.

After the evacutation of Dunkirk many refugees remained in France desperate to get home to Britain, but they had one last chance before being surrounded. The cunard liner "Lancastria" lay off the French port St Nazaire ready to leave and also ready to take on board all who were fleeing.

The "Lancastria" although lacking in size compared to other cunarders was an exceedingly fine ship with beautiful sleek lines and a single funnell. Anyway on the 17th of June 1940 she was the last chance for the desprate escapees and she was ready to take on board with hardly a thought of numbers. It is said that 6000 and some say even 9000 were jam packed in her when the enemy attacked from the air. After a very severe pounding with bombs, one of which went straight down her single funnell, she keeled over and sank. 2,500 were saved.

The loss ofthe "Lancastria" was devestating, with a loss of life worse than that of the "Titanic" and owing to the effect it could have had the morale of the British people it didn't become a news item.

I trust that I will be forgiven for my poor attempt at relating this sad story and I am sure the bravery beyond description involved. In ending I am pleased that an association was formed that has a very special interest to keep the final resting place of the "Lancastria" free from any tampering by intruders.

This is indeed a most sobering story and I humbly feel that we have a requirement to reverently the sacrafice and the tragadies that happened - yes, for our freedom and wellbeing.

A Change Of Narrative

I usally like to prepare my blogs beforehand , But this weekend I didn't and I am entering just a fairly short one. Nodoubt better than none at all.

Over the Easter period this year, wev'e had quite extraordinary weather. I can hardly remember seeing such before. The island abounded in tourists and they seemed to enjoy it; the back packers and cycalists too.

I don't expect it's a good policy to look ahead too much as regards the weather, but someone said to me today, "I hope this is not our Summer we're getting now." Well who knows!

I think that my interest in Climate Change and Global Warming has waned somewhat recently, but the dispute still goes on as to what the cause is. I still believe in the man induced proposition as regards the pollution of the atmosphere.

I hope you had a nice Easter.

Is This To Be The Reality

Never before have news regarding the world been so readily available to us through the various media. Infact,is it is possible for any of us to keep apace with it all. Unfortunately recently, good uplifting reports seem dificult to come by, except that which is alarming or even frightening.

In the last day or two we sorrowed for an American town struck in the most horrifying way by mass murder, with which Virginia will be connected with for many generations to come. We are asking the burning question why and how. Are we ever going to know what goes on in the mind of a would be killer. But be that as it may, I am sure that if the gun laws the USA were to be considered for very serious reform that the effort against gun crime would have a good chance to succeed.

The day after the Virginia disaster 170 Iraquians died in a single blast, the worst killing since since the American security operation began. In Iraq we are faced with mass murder on a massive level. I personally see no rhyme nor reason for it but hate. Is there any answer for hate enmass and impossible to control.

I find it rather hurtful how this conflict has been a major news item and that I am aware fellow human beings who share this planet with me are known as fanatical killers.
