The
Monument is over 150 years old |
The
monument was built when the chapel was knocked down.
The chapel appears on old prints as a plain oblong building
with a stumpy turret like spire.
In 1850, it was pulled down to make way for St Mary鈥檚 on
the adjacent site. Its ancient dripstones betrayed the presence
of an earlier Saxon edifice.
Though
the records of 1645 recommended the chapel as fit to be
a parish church, it was another 200 years before such a
change took place in a private act of Parliament in 1844.
The monument and Jesus sitting on the top and underneath
it has angels reading a book called the Holy Bible. The
architects built it so the light shines on it and it glows.
The
monument was built in the 1850s and it is still standing
now in 2002. The monument is surrounded by fences so little
children can鈥檛 run up and climb on it and vandalise it.
The
monument is a very old statue and has not been harmed for
52 years. The monument is a tall building and is still in
good condition. It stands right in the middle of West Derby
and is by the pub called Hare and Hounds.
