The
Molyneaux family were given lots of land by William
the Conquerer who built a castle in 1213. They built
a wall around it then built a village next to it.
Some
of the villagers lived in the castle walls. After a
few years they knocked the castle down and built a new
one in town.
The
family that owned Croxteth Hall were called the Molyneauxs.
The Molyneaux family became very powerful. They owned
lots of land but when the War of the Roses started,
they chose the wrong side.
Because
of this, the Molyneaux鈥檚 land grew smaller and smaller.
The Molyneaux family lived in Croxteth Hall and it still
stands today. But families can鈥檛 last forever, the Molyneaux
family came to an end when a family member died and
had no-one to leave the estate to, so it was left to
the people of West Derby.
After
the Molyneaux family, many things changed. The estate
was left to the people of West Derby and so it became
a park that you could visit whenever you liked. The
estate became open to the public.
