No
women were allowed inside the Courthouse |
This
was a manor Courthouse which has now been in West Derby
for over 1000 years. People were not sent to prison here
they were either sent to the stocks or fined. No women were
allowed in the Courthouse and men weren鈥檛 allowed in the
Courthouse unless they were over 21 years of age.
The
Courthouse was built in 1662. The stocks were originally
set next to the Courthouse but the stocks have now been
moved next to Yeoman鈥檚.
A
Courthouse has been in West Derby for over 1000 years since
Wapentake court in Viking times. The present court house
was rebuilt in 1586 by Queen Elizabeth I.
It
was built of sandstone because it was the strongest material
around. The court house is next to the original site of
the stocks. The court house has one window and a studded
door.
