Where is he now?
Steve realised life in Bryncoed would be difficult if he and Ruth were to make a go of it, so jumped at the offer of a job in Newcastle.
He had worked as an engineer in the same pit as his dad for just a few years when the strike came, and then redundancy. He invested his relatively small pay-out in his dad's new garage. They soon had plans to expand, and Steve was groomed by Margaret to take over the garage, and sent on small business courses. On one of the courses Steve met Ruth, who would become his wife. George's sickness, however, put all plans on hold.
After his father's death, Steve ran the garage himself with temporary help as needed, finally taking on Will's son Owen as full time apprentice and assistant. Very close to his mother, Margaret's departure to Spain with a man his own age, hit him very hard.
In the second series, the garage finances went from bad to worse as Steve's emotional life went into turmoil. His perfectionism and inability to find a new mechanic led to long delays in service, as did his going AWOL from Bryncoed for a week after finding out about Ruth's abortion.
The rift with Ruth resulted in a brief infidelity with visiting businesswoman Louise, but Ruth is his long term love and he's very much a one-woman man. He was very relieved when the "affair" never came to light. By the end of series 2, they were back on track, and Steve was beginning to forgive (but not forget) his mother for leaving them.
In Series 4, Steve's world fell around his ears when Ruth confessed to an emotional involvement with his supposed best friend Moz. He and Ruth agreed to try again, but although he sang to Ruth at the party and didn't beat Moz up on the spot, the incident certainly didn't seem to be over for Steve. Steve remained oblivious to the fact that Hannahwas in fact Moz's lover.
Series Five
Steve begins series 5 devastated by the loss of his mother and the fact that he'd not spotted her spiral into depression. He was also still wrestling with the revelations of Ruth's infidelity. Therapy helped him cope with the discovery of Hannah's ongoing relationship with Moz but the discovery that Ruth had lied throughout broke the camel's back and made him lash out violently and do real damage in his final showdown with Moz, at the end of series five.
Series Six
Steve was still furious with Ruth and wanted a divorce ... although he almost fell back into bad habits when Stacey revealed she was pregnant by CaiRuth and Steve had to pull together. Steve, though, was uncomfortable with the way Ruth was hell-bent on an abortion for Stacey, and instead falls for Debbie's easy-going attitude. Steve was surprised at how great the sex was with Debbie, and how much fun he had.
He moved in with her, much to Hannah's disgust, and became the man of the house, even persuading Debbie to give up her dope-dealing and actually insure her car. Although in many ways Steve still loved Ruth, he was trying to have a clean break, and so pressed on with the divorce and selling the family home.
In series 7, Steve's off to Newcastle to become an NVQ trainer, and he's thrown his lot in with Debbie and is loving it. But Debbie becomes too much of a handful for staid Steve, and his loyalties would seem to really lie with Ruth. They head to Newcastle together to try and make a go of it.
