Leighton moved to Cambridge in Series 3 with his girlfriend "Birdie" so that they could concentrate on IVF treatment.

After Ceri left him, he lived in hope that she would return but when he finally realised it was over he quickly found love with fellow train driver Gwyneth 'Birdie' Bird.

He never thought Birdie's infertility would be a problem for them but the closer they get, the more they realise that Jake isn't enough for them both and they want a child of their own.
