Where is he now?
Moved away after the divorce from Wendy. Without Wendy or Des (or Carl) in his life there was little point in sticking around.
A likeable, charming rogue with a powerful personality and used to getting his own way. He's always been handy with his fists and is the sort of bloke people don't mess with because it's clear that he won't run from a fight.
He married Vanessa at 21 and he loved her at the time but their relationship was always volatile. Huge arguments were regularly followed by great sex but Des's arrival changed things. He had started his own small building firm, but money was tight and the added stress of a child on top of a failing business meant that things between them deteriorated. The rows started taking a nasty turn and he started doing real damage to Vanessa.
When she and Desiree disappeared from his life, after getting over the initial shock and anger, he decided that it was for the best. He knew that they weren't good for each other and didn't like the person he'd become with her, worried that things would escalate beyond his control. His business went belly up around the same time and he moved to a new area where he found a job with Peter Thomas, a successful, if small time, local builder.
Peter recognised a bit of a kindred spirit in Dai and although he admired his positive qualities was wary of him, recognising his violent temper. When his only daughter fell for Dai, she talked her Dad round to giving them his blessing. When Peter died he left the firm to Wendy.
Dai never forgets that he owes Wendy his present good fortune - his life changed when he met her and they had a successful if unexciting partnership ever since. Wendy is unemotional and non confrontational - the opposite of Dai, and he respects those qualities which have got him out of trouble on many occasions. She's always one step ahead of him emotionally and can read him like a book. They don't argue and he's grateful for it because he's seen himself in a turbulent relationship and knows how dangerous that can get.
His only child with Wendy is Carl who has always proved a bit of a disappointment. He's not a man's man like his father and grandfather and Dai's convinced that Wendy has spoilt him. He tries to do the opposite. He is rapidly losing patience with Carl and his dropping out of college was a last straw. He's determined to make the boy knuckle down and earn some money of his own, learning a couple of useful trades whilst he's at it. He has no time for Carl's airy fairy ideas about being an interior designer and strongly fears that his son is gay. This isn't a fear that is left unspoken.
In Series 6, Dai was tracked down by Des and although at first he has no idea who she really is, he enjoys her outspoken, no-nonsense personality. When he finds out the truth, he soon embraces Des into the family and even gives her a house to show just how much she means to him - much to Wendy and Carl's annoyance. Dai's proud of Des - at least one of his kids turned out to be a man!
Dai loses no time showing Vanessa just how well he's done for himself, but is surprised by just how much he is still attracted to her. In comparison to cold fish Wendy, Vanessa is full of life, someone Dai can spark off. Maybe this time they can have the passion without the violence...
Dai's charm comes to the fore, and Vanessa is persuaded to take a weekend away with him. When Will and Wendy cotton on, though, the game is up. It's stopped before it's ever started, and Wendy embarrasses Dai in front of everyone at the Fun Run. Back home, Dai is furious and lashes out at Wendy, hitting her. It's the first time he's laid a hand on her - but will it be the last?
In Series 7, Dai and Wendy are off on a second honeymoon, trying to patch things up. But how long will the second honeymoon last, and will Dai be going back to his bad old ways? And just how will Dai react to there being another man in Des' life?
