Oh well, I was just begining to enjoy the Incredible String Band when it was cut off.Happy Birthday Scotch!

In all the discussions on this blog there has been an ongoing longing for the less obvious. In response, 'Pigs Will Fly' was created, but you can tell there is a reluctance and hesitation in Bryan's approach it - it appears as close to the end as possible and tonight was cut off early.

Some time ago I was arguing that there was a need for 'another show' to satisfy a pent up demand, evident on the blog, for less obvious tracks without the division by genre that appears elsewhere on the station.

Tonight, we got it.Edith Bowman.

The first hour of her show tonight included lots of stuff that many of us would be happy to hear and discover. It's the best hour of music I've heard on Radio Scotland since I accidentally started listening to GIO about nine months ago.

Just wish I'd thought pushing the idea harder and asking for the presenting job.

For Thursday: I have only ever listened to brutal death metal. The first album I ever bought was "Eaten Back To Life" by Cannibal Corpse. The most recent was "Degenerate" by Trigger the Bloodshed.

We got our dog from a rescue place. All the dogs had a post-it note attached to their cage showing their name (how they knew them all if they were strays is beyond me - perhaps some were made up, and the others - maybe their previous owners left them there with a few details to help the poor little beasts feel at home with their next owners) Ours had two. "Ben" on one "Previously known as Flynn" on the other. Yes, he'd been there before. We decided Ben didn't suit his swachbuckling, gung-ho spirit and plumped for Flynn instead. I don't know if he was named after Errol (maybe that's where he originally came from) but for the purposes of the theme tonight I'm going to pretend we named him after
Johnny Flynn instead.
Lost and Found also sort of suits the dog rescue thing. or - seeing as you mentioned trouts tonight, there is also Brown Trout Blues
Johnny and his band have worked with Mumford & Sons. This lad is going to be big.

If artists join together and have a hit does that count (even if they had other hits on their own - eg Elton John & Kiki Dee)?
What if the band change their name but not the line-up? (eg Martha and The Vandellas?)
Or somebody leaves the band and has solo hits?

Just to have a look at some examples on Joe`s list (not having a go Joe!)

GIO has never let the facts get in the way of playing anything they feel like playing, probably The Proclaimers.

JfE could give us guidance here, but he's gone and we are a lost tribe, wandering in the desert of interpretation.

We did this theme last Autumn. I remember it because I got Rosie Vela's 'Magic Smile' played.I shall request it again.

Probably the greatest one hit wonder is 'Spirit In the Sky' because it's been a one hit wonder for more than one artist.Norman Greenbaum is the daddy,though, literally and stylistically.

I know where you're coming from, but I suspect BB and the team will be keen to retain the flexibility of an open interpretation (recognising that permits the best range of songs to be played = the best possible show).:)

I'm not that up about ISB either, it doesn't really do it for me, but I've got hang up's about 'folk' music.I'd listened to it on spotify earlier in the day and thought they'd had one too many mushrooms.It was beginning to sound better on the show when it was abruptly ended.

There's a certain contemptuous casual disdain for the audience in this regard, which, without trying to sound po faced about it, I find I can't admire.

It's a great format, GIO, but it's hardly impartial.

If they are going to run with Pigs will Fly, then it should be properly embraced.Squeezing it into the last ten minutes and cutting when time is short seems openly disrespectful of the audience to me.

It raises expectations but delivers them grudgingly which is worse than never having raised them at all.No one feels satisfied with the outcome.

I'd rather have a decent PWF slot that that fab five thing. I don't understand the point of that.

Evidently, no one came up with five sings about peas?

I'm moved to respond the the ISB remarks! Sorry the track was cut short because that's how it was when I downloaded it! Not because we were running out of time, not because we didn't want to play it all, and not because we were trying to make some point. Plain and simple, a download fault. And just a gentle reminder, the PWF feature was an idea generated on this blog which we thought was fun and fits in well with the ethos of a fun Friday, it's not meant to be "patronising" - it's meant to be a bit of entertainment and interaction - add to that the chance to hear something that folk feel is overlooked. And yes Glen you are correct, Get it On isn't an 80s revival show, but it's a decade that clearly generates a good amount of requests and every single track played on the show is requested by our audience.
Thanks for the suggestions for this week so far.

I have a feeling that for many of the requests from these pages the team just don't "get it". This may be because they have only recently been recruited from school and have only heard about the Beatles in passing from their grandfathers or perhaps they were traumatised by an accidental childhood over-exposure to The Laughing Policeman which rendered them subject to flashbacks. Bryan is certainly well up on country music but sometimes I feel he would be happier with two hours of Bronski Beat.

Would it hurt the damage the nation's psyche to hear five minutes of Frank Zappa among an hour and a half of Duran Duran?

It's not what is played so much as what seems to be off-limits. I do think it's patronising, and to many people would be inexplicable that names such as Dave Gilmour, Frankie Miller, Frank Zappa and ISB should have to be lobbied and begged for in order to get a one-off play on a radio programme that is listened to by many people for whom these names are important part of their musical heritage, not some off-the-wall oddities of whom few have heard.
I told a friend about the programme, urged him to listen to it, but had to admit that he would not be hearing at least two of his favourite singers. He was completely baffled.

eg would Venus - Shocking Blue count- I think the only one to make the British charts, but they'd others in the Dutch charts.

BRING ME THE RED-EYE REDUCTION MODE OF ALFREDO GARCIA!

I apologise, Babs, for misunderstanding that a real technical fault had occured on the ISB track.

I presumed the abrupt ending of the track was part of the general wind up between the team and its mutinous and unruly bloggers. I think (and I'm desperately trying not to be po faced here)Bryan's sarcastic comment that 'it only had 12 minutes to go' led me to that view.

So although I unreservedly apologise in the narrow measure,in the big picture I do think there is a kind of disdain or sufference displayed in the squeezing the item in at the tail end of the show.

A casual look through last week's playlist doesn't suggest an 80's revival show, it must be said, but my feeling remains that there is still a huge bias in favour of the obvious and the marginalisation of the less obvious - and, of course, the presenter and producer are human too - they have likes and dislikes.Who wouldn't play things they are drawn to?

I have always ascribed this, overall, to the pressure of the intercative nature of the show.

I think in the pressure of the evening, it is an overwhelming temptation to respond to instant texts and f***book messages which means going with the more obvious choices because they are, 'obviously' well known to the presenter and the producer.That's why campaigns start.

The 'trouble' is that the bloggers have given their requests some considerable thought usually well in advance of the show and, possibly quite wrongly, 'feel' that their choices are obscured though they are not obscure requests in themselves - simply more consdiered and less obvious.

I think the difference is that the instant response folks first request music to fit a theme on the night(this doesn't mean they care for the music) wheras the bloggers request music that they care passionately about,(which happens to fit a theme).

The difference is subtle, of course, and the management of that balance on the show is delicate, no doubt - but the technical fault on Friday seems to have exposed the feeling (down here,at least) that that 'balance' is still to be achieved.

'Pigs Will Fly' is one way of redressing the balance, hence the gnashing of teeth, presumption of collusion, and heaping of criticism when an unfortuitous 'technical fault', inevitably, brought down the Incredible String Band.

Quite incredible, really:-)

Leaving mother and child to get some rest, I left the Queen Mother, saundered up Byres Road and found 'Sara' going round in my head. A chinese meal in the Amber wouldn't shift it, so I decided to go with the flow.

The first Mrs Hannah had other ideas, however, and the child remained un-named for fully three weeks, when she had to be readmitted for health complications.We compromised on 'Sarah'.

Sadly, after three years of battling, Sarah's health complications proved overwhelming.

And then we discovered there was really nothing much we could agree about, at all, (which is quite 'normal',I discovered years later).

It was long ago and far away,of course, but the song still evokes memories of Sarah and her short but happy life.

No need to rehearse all this on air, though, but I would be chuffed to hear it.

Go down to your local butchers and get him to cut up a pig into bite size chunks. Its important that you get the tongue, ears and feet too.
Leave all this to soak overnight. Put on a big pot of black beans to cook slowly, add in the pig.
Serve with rice, kail, pumpkin and cabbage.
This is a simple Feijoada.

Can`t remember if you and daughter are vegetarians though. If you are, just leave out the pig.

Joe is the Blog cook. He has a few Brazilian recipes.

#84/93 - I'm afraid I only have first-hand experience of making one Brazilian dish, barreado, which is a slow-cooked meat stew from Paran谩 State, Brazil.

The essential ingredients for barreado include meat cuts, bay leaf, cilantro, black pepper, and other herbs, which are tied in bundles and removed from the pan before serving. (Google for a more detailed recipe)It is prepared in a clay pot whose lid is sealed (traditionally with a sort of clay made from wheat or cassava flour. After about 8-12 hours of cooking barreado is served over cassava flour, with banana slices. The meat juices are mixed with the flour to make pir茫o - a kind of gravy.

Ca莽ha莽a is the potent rum-like drink traditionally served with barreado.
