Mr Blue Sky

Well, the Can the Can blog is popular. I don't think I'll ever beat that. Take a look. I know whats in the can, but even I can't think of it in the same light after seeing Flying Cat. Here's the link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/islandblogging/blogs/005219/0000008401.shtml

Its February: month of gales, snow & school closures, none of which has happened yet. It is also the month that we begin to see daylight during the week. It was light by 8 am this morning. The dog can now see his ball without aid of a flashlight. Summer is almost here. So I thought I'd post a warm summer picture to cheer everyone up.
Long Summer Days

Up Helly A' or Up Helly Aa is over for another year in the big toon. Many more local ones to go yet: Uyeasound, Cullivoe & Norwick all in the next 6 weeks. After then it will be daylight.

Lazing On a Sunny Afternoon

Well, Can the Can mania is sweeping the north isles (at least 3 people have asked whats in the can). See picture below to find out the fate of the most recent enquirer. The picture was taken this morning.
What lies beneath?

Its very quiet here in Fetlar. It always is, according to an Unst person who said this week that they had been here once in their entire life, and saw nobody. I decided to put this to the test this morning and went out for an early (well it is Sunday!) morning walk. It was beautifully sunny outside with nae wind. I thought I'd take the dog for his monthly bath in that great poodle parlour called the North Sea. This was a great success. I now have a clean dog, who smells of the briny. Till this point I had seen no-one (unless you count sheep).

Then 3 cars - more than a traffic jam here - and there was no scheduled ferry to head for! When I returned to Magnolia View there was a great big pile of parcels awaiting me. They had obviously been delivered in my absence. (Deliveries before 10:30 on a Sunday? Very unusual!)

Methinks the Unst person was wrong.

The road to the School - bathed in winter sun.

Four Seasons In One Day

It is happening again. The weather is being odd: beautifully sunny one moment, then blowing a near gale from the north, a sleet shower, next calm and sunny. What is it with this winter? Has it started or is it over with?

It is thinking about sleeting.

Soon it looks like it had never been sleeting. Weird!
Clear again!

Another busy day in Fetlar: two plumbers (they were expected); the mobile library (kind of expected) & the Postie (always expected). This tele-working is great. Remote working from a remote place.

The Arty shot. (Well, nearly!)

A Winter's Tale

Who will save us from this odd weather?
Dawn over the snow.

It's beautiful here at the moment. A little covering of snow made it seem really light at 7 am this morning. Did it cause anyone else to panic? I thought I'd slept in because it seemed to be daylight. It was just the reflection of the snow.

The School Road

We hope it doesn't snow anymore as we are supposed to be build a shaduff tomorrow as part of the school's Egyptian Topic. A fine clear day like this would be good, but please no more snow.

Egyptian Reggae

The shaduff was erected at the burn & it worked. More pictures on the Fetlar School website: www.fetlar.shetland.sch.uk/news

Down by the brig, a school draws water!

It works. Water is drawn.

A successful day. It didn't snow till half an hour after they had packed up and gone home for hot chocolate. It was cold yesterday after all.

I've noticed 4 of my recent blogs are still receiving comments. Do people have nothing else to do or have I sold my soul to IBHQ?

I believe today is February 9th.......

Such anticipation...... I can almost taste it.

More later......

Food For Thought

Here it is!

Yes it was.

It's Good News Week

Good news abounds this week:
Damadcoo has obviously escaped from the byre to type a new blog. Maybe she was investigating bird flu somewhere as an under cover agent?
(Speaking of bird flu - what happened to PuffinBillyUnst? Has he been taken by the great plague?)
Otherwise:
1. What will we do now there's no can the can?
2. What were the 101 things to do in Scotland before you die? Us without access to daily newspapers don't know & life is obviously slipping away. My chances to do the 101 things are getting less by the day.
3. What is chugging? Didn't Ivor the Engine chug? How does a charity chug?
4. When will it snow? (Is it global warming?)
5. Does Scallowawife's settee fit in her new empire?
6. Anyone interested in blogging bingo?

No reason for it - I just like this picture.

Sun Arise

Sunrise at 7:45. Longer days are almost here.

Sun Arise, spreading all its light all around... ound .... ound. Nowt like Rolf Harris at 7:45 am is there?

Red sky at morn? Shepherds warn?

Yesterday was February 14th. A very special day. The only day in the year when it is both 14 days from, and 14 days till, next pay day. Yes its the shortest pay month.

Violently Happy!

So here it is: A Fetlar blog about Unst.
[This blog was delayed because it didn't have a suitable song title. But it does now!]

The sun shines throughout the Jarl Squad

Some people may have thought that Up Helly Aa' was over for 2007. Well it isn't. In the island to the north of us it has only just begun. Today is the Uyeasound Up Helly Aa'. The Vikings invaded the Junior High School, the Care Centre and the Uyeasound Primary School. The bairns from Fetlar also travelled out in the early morning light to see the Viking Invasion.

Scary people in Unst! We would never do anything like that here.
A Vicious Violent Viking!

More pictures at www.baltasound.shetland.sch.uk

For those who don't know, the title is a song by Bjork so it qualifies twice as she is Icelandic ( & there's lots of [pretend] violence).

Echo Beach

Yuk. What a night of weather it was. Most of the parents at the school's parents evening nearly got blown away. One even changed our weather chart to say stormy.

I'm off to take pictures, as soon as I can. Echo beach... far away in time......
Posted on Muness Views at 14:11

Come Ootside!!!

The weather on Thursday & Friday (22/23rd Feb) was a bit rough. A peerie grain o' wind is probably the best description. Anyway, after watching the sea earlier on in the day, your trusty Fetlar blogger took his camera out to see what like it was. Caution was thrown to the strong wind.

Lots of pictures were taken, but lots were deleted as it looked like they'd been shot through the bottom of a well used Whisky glass(!) The spray was so strong that the moody pictures were ruined.

These are from the East End of Fetlar. They were taken near Da Haa, looking towards Norway.
Approach to the beach.

Old crofthouse by the raging sea.

Nae swell!

Your trusty blogger then went away hame to dry oot [from the rain].

PS Did PuffinBilly get the innoculation? He seems to be risen from obscurity again? Has he been migrating somewhere?

When the boat comes in......

This will sound like a joke:

3 bloggers went to the beach one day and saw a fish......

What is this fish?
Is it a rare prehistoric species?
Is it a Teenage Mutant Ninja Fish?

What type of fish is it? We've asked people, sent photos away & sent emails. No-one is certain but we think we might know but....

Please, please, please can someone out there give us the definitive answer. It was found after a few days of gales at Norwick in Unst.

Suggestions please.

True teamwork this: Damadcoo took some pics, Ruthodanort took most pics & poor old Muness stood almost knee deep in the North Sea to get water to wash the fish for it's publicity shots!

(PS Before anyone says it: this fish was not in the can. Really it WAS pears.)
