I've been taking time out

In Ness there isn't enough time to take a gap year what with peats, guga, lambing and a summer football season so the best a young guy can manage is a couple of months. After a chat with the local minister, I decided to go and spend two months working with the poor in England. So poor are they down there that they have to drink water from bottles instead of going to the well or having taps. I helped put soem taps into some houses along with thousands of plumbers from Poland who have come to England to help with aid. I visited Primark and Mark One where the poor shop and saw how the Far East is sending clothes over for the English at a price that is putting their charity shops out of business. Given that most Englsih shopping centres are predominantly charity shops, this is a ticking time bomb. Soon all the charity shops will be closing and Primark will have won. I watched the poor at ply on Scarborough beach with their tribal tattoos and characteristic shaved heads and that was justthe women. It is comforting to think that they have a vote even if they only have a dieet of chips and something called fish bits. I am back in Lewis with full larders and running water, with no Primark just good old emorioalanjohn and a weallth of produce. I am working on a scheme to send rabbit from the Eoropie machair to areas of negative equity and have the neighbours knitting blankets for a family in Saint John's Wood. Maybe a flag day for the English - what do you think?
Serioulsy I've been working on a film called 'Snappers' in Torbay due for release in late 08 starring Mark Benton Kate Winslett, Joss Stone and Chrissie Mry Morrison if she'll get on the casting couch with me. Hence the lack of blogs.

oh heavens CA, not the English ...?!! Perhaps you'll appreciate better which side your bread (with or without guga) is buttered now you're home ...!!

Hi, C, good to read your peppery tale and to know that all is well with you. I guess you were too busy doing something with Chrissie Mary to give us furriners a Fank report - well, it can wait to next year, I guess. Rabbits, OK, hares, no go. They are my totem animal.

When I was in England last year, I ended up going to Primark for a nice assortment of boxer shorts. It was either that, do without, or steam in the same one (I did not pack properly, obviously). Marks and Sparks have gone upscale (or I may be going down the consumption ladder), sandwiches now are made with baguettes and croissants, and I won't even bother you with the price of a steak and kidney pudding (not to mention that of Guga at Harrod's and Fortnum). I shall stick to good American steak, hormones and other supplements included free of charge. And, Calum., you could do worse than stay in Lewis, lounge at home on Sundays, and look for sales at Alanemporiojohn. 'tis a jungle out there.

Do tell, should we expect to see some Lewis based product placement in this film?

You truelly are a visionary with your missionary work down south. You are also an inspiration to others. As I understand it someone in Glasgow read your blog and arranged for 150,000 people to go down to England with the biggest job creation initiative that they have ever seen. They created employment for over a million lager manufacturers and countless jobs for street sweepers, paramedics and police officers. When the news of your good work spreads I am sure that the whole of Scotland will help out. I am also sure that you will receive the recognition you deserve for this work "Sir Callumanabell" as I understand that this blog is read in high places. Good to have you back blogging.

Tormod from totally in awe of your good work.

By high places - do you mean the Cairn Gorms?

How exciting to think 'Lewis based product placement' could mean Mr C Barley getting his puddings out and giving them an airing.

You should see Joss Stone's new marac ad!!!!!!

I just finished making my first 48 min short film - what a fantastic, manic, funny way of gambling with money. Sadly I couldn't afford Joss but after a lot of thought, the idea having her appear in film may well draw a crowd. Sadly I am unable to name drop famous people in my effort although I did have a guest appearance of a dog with strange teeth that is rumoured to have passed water on HRH Anne. Hope your efforts prosper.

That dog must be awarded a gong at once! And you won't often see me say such a thing...

Pondhead 48 minutes us not a short film! It'smore than half a full length one. We are three weeks into filming at Torbay and the rushes look good. Where are you going to show your film?

calumannabel from Paramount Peatstack Lewis

Could this be iB's first authentic virtual "I'll show you mine if you show me yours" moment?

Flying Cat from all agog

Paramount Peatstack sounds more organised than my wonky documentary which took a year to do. Its out as intended on DVD after a couple of showings. 50 people at the film club in the art centre and a short extract was shown at the screen machine. Looked great up on the big screen. Didn't think about applause - quite unexpected and touching that. The intention was always to sell as a DVD and its doing ok, a hundred or so per month. May sound pathetic but this means there's a chance of breaking even and I get to do something else. In the mean time I keep tinkering with it so maybe in another year it will be a different full length film - shall I book a room for one at Sundance? Hope yours is going well.Did you get a Winnebago and personal trainers and your own food technician and lots of autographs to flog on ebay etc...I do hope so.

We've trailers galore - we're shooting in a caravan park. We've a helicopter for filming shots on the Weymouth Ferry and BMW have lent us some cars. Shooting has been delayed for 3 days with rain. I told them we should have shot in Harris! 56 minutes in the can so over halfway.

calum from the Studio, Brue

Sporting a hint of green envy here. I did get a cherry picker in for a couple of expensive looking shots but no luck with aircraft yet. I will have to try it on with the Sea Plane operators who fly into Tobermory.( I never thought I would live under the landing flight path of a commercial air line.) You have 58 minutes in the can - you guys are shifting. I guess when you factor in the combined man hours including writing etc its always going to be a slow process. Thankfully I don't have meetings to attend but then again I am really slow to do all the colour balance stuff and sound, most of which has to be done afterwards because the camera sound often isn't great. I am looking at another year of filming to get mine up to 1.15 or 1.20 but its coming on. On Saturday I film an otter under the Tobermory pier being photographed by a diver just 5 feet away. A good result for me - 40 seconds from a weekend of hunting will seem terrible but that's a result. Are you involved in writing the script? Do hope so. Should be a blast. Back out into another perfect sunny day here...what a life.

pondhead from Tobermory

We're scheduled to do the post production in Glasgow. There is an excellent studio near the airport we use. If you're in Glasgow....etc etc I'm sure we could get together and chat..

calumannabel from uci cottage brue

That sounds a far more exciting idea than you coming to Tobermory to look at my computers with their guts hanging out. I will jump at your offer of : "Glasgow...etc" It would be "helpful" to get a glimpse at how its supposed to be done and have a chat. I fear I may find out that I haven't a clue and only progress because I have a bit of an eye, some ideas and a surplus of perseverance. Fantastic offer, thanks. If its ok with Carol could we exchange emails via her?
