Wind Farms - how to rape an island and make shareholders rich

I watched the 成人快手1 news coverage at 5am and 8.30am this morning. The reporter was obviously speaking from Pairc where, surprise surprise, we saw three windfarms, and not one working. Still a blight on the horizon but contributing zilch. I imagine it wasn't windy enough, too windy , leaves on the line or whateverbut imagine how frustrating it would be to pass mile after mile of the blighters all switched off. The tourists on the tours who do bring income to the isles will be looking at their brochures and turning toi their spouses, ' I thought this was Lewis. Are we not back in Grangemouth, dear?'
Mr MacLeod kindly reminded us that the island would benefit from 拢5m a year aside from the benefits from having 400 new jobs on the island. I read an informed article in the broadsheets recently that stated that a standard turbine can 'generate' 拢500k of income a year. This equates to over 拢90m a year for the 186 turbines of which Mr Macleod says his benevolent masters will give us 拢5m of it. It's a wonder they haven't tried to buy us off with coloured beads and promises of a big iron horse running on rails from Port of Ness to Leverburgh.
400 new jobs means the majority will come from the mainland, raising house prices and effectively ruling out local people getting on the housing ladder. The only people that will benefit will be the Pension funds with their marble offices in Perth and Stirling not the ordinary man or woman from Lemreway, Gress or Carloway. I hope the scheme is refused and the energy authorities sent homeward to Bearsden and Morningside to think again.

400 jobs? Doing what? Surely this is just in the construction phase. I can't see these mills keeping 400 people in full time employment. 2 jobs per turbine?

Calumannabel, The town fathers want this scheme, and refer to anyone who does not as indulging in environmental colonialism, sitting in the Central Belt, telling the natives what to do. Sounds to me like it's the town fathers that are sitting in the Central Belt (read: Sandwick Road, Stornoway), telling the natives what to do. The natives don't want this chest of beads and mirrors.

Snowman from On top of Roineabhal

One or two councillors already have enormous central belts. With the recent stonking pay rise, they can go only one way...

This is bizarre. A massive proportion of the population actively object to this project, a tiny proportion show favour and BINGO! it's What Everyone Wants. There was that nice Mr Campbell on telly last evening and he's convinced its a good thing...oh never trust a Campbell...so they say...

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

More revenue equals more meetings and more expenses. Maybe they'll vote on a railway and run a Gravy train from all parts to Sandwick Road and a bigger ferry to carry their egos to meetings on the mainland. I have never yet met anyone who has entered politics for anyhting other than self aggrandisement and this lot are no different.

Ooooo what a cynic!

You bring back the guillotine, Calum. and I'll provide a can of WD40 (and a roll of duct tape, if I am feeling generous). # MacDo's, FC? Oh, the tartaned arches...

who is that standing upon my soap-box - get off this minute you hooligan ...!! Seriously though, I find this whole subject so depressing - there's not a great deal you can do about it, it seems ... and for people with a developed sense of fair-play, that is a problem ... Is it just as you grow older that you get more cynical ...? Would this misuse of democratic power have appalled me so much if I was still 17 ...? (not so long ago, as I'm now 27 ... <ahem> )

soaplady from bristling with indignation

Now come on, you're both grown-ups - surely you can share a soapbox! (although it would seem the age gap is somewhat larger than I had imagined!)

Flying Cat from archly tartan

Don't bet on it FC ... :-) I just have a bit of an issue with the proper definition of age, that's all ...

soaplady from a sheepish grin

Try it from my point of view! Seven cat years to one human one...that makes me...*thinks*...35!

Flying Cat from silver hairs among the gold

35 FC? I can see middle age crisis coming up. Next thing you know, you'll want to be a dog ... Or you could go walkabouting, going back to your roots in metropolitan Finstoon.

拢5million a year for seriously wrecking the place? Are they nuts? Thats sod all these days. 400 construction jobs- maybe 100 locally if they can find the labourers and the rest will be Poles or whatever. If I hear they have no plan B another time I'll drive my tractor off a cliff. Fish/shellfish landings in Shetland last year were worth 拢73million (Lewis maybe 5-7mil) oil was worth 拢70. Due to our councils lack of investment oand interest we have a local fishing industry treading water when it could be a significant employer and generate far more to the economy than a concrete island with metal trees. Fishings by and large tourist friendly as well so we won't lose that bone! Lets have more diversity in employment, makes for a happier life than working for a huge company!

not having tv i haven't seen the programme, thanks calum for the info on the figures, I used to be pro wind power when i believed it was green energy but now I know it's all about selling shares and green offsets I am against it unless it is community run for the community,
