Is there a new airport on the West Side of Lewis?

I am indebted to the excellent and seemingly well travelled Arnish Lighthouse for drawing my attention to the new airport near Callanish. Follow his Standing Stones item to the first photo which has a title 'Callanish Air' and you'll get a tantalising glimpse of the new site. I knew something was going on last Summer when I saw all the road rollers and noted that the old stone quarry at Breaasclete was busy again. I'm sure this development will rival anything BA or Eastern Airways can come up with - Bernera will be linked to Schipol before we know it. From the aerial view of the airport the parking looks better than that offered by its tired competitor at Stornoway. It's marvellous the way that the whole thing has been incorporated so seamlessly into the local topography - tammies off to the architect - obviously not Norm Foster. Anyway if this new Gravir Airport is anything like we'll be landing a jumbo full of Nova Scotian bodachs there and ferrying them to the Dell Fank for the Matchmaking Festival. I'd imagine they'll sail through customs by the open plan look of the site. Well done Callanish Air!

Thanks for the compliment. By my information, it'll be waterplanes off Loch Roag or from the loch at Tolsta Chaolais. Other airport sites in the islands include the beaches of Sollas in North Uist, Scarista in Harris, Laig in Eigg and a pretty definite for Ashaig in Skye. Callanish could be a landingstrip of Richard Branson's spaceflights, as some sources hold it to be a marker for extra-terrestrials. See the entry, which will come up later on Saturday, about the alternative landingstrip at Callanish.

On a BA flight some time back the crew were a Capt Alabaster and a fellow called Fishpool. Perfectly OK at flying the plane but where do they get these names. I hope Callanish Air will employ Morrsons, MacDonalds, and Campbells though it's a good idea to keep Campbells and MacDoanlds apart - there's a 'bit of previous' between them I'm told. Anyone else got any mad surnames for people in public transport? Is this the sort of thing you're after? Sorry for one moment I thought I was from Harris!

Well the in-flight food is sorted then with Ronnie McD doing the burgers, Campbells doing the soup and Morrisons supplying the trolley dollies. I suppose Agnes Anne M will be signing up for a pilot training programme. By the way Iona Tractor told me about this great website for the The Western Isles Transport Preservation Group: http://www.witpg.org.uk/buses.htm It brings back a few memories of the boat bus, Lewis Motors, etc...
