Hello, sailors! Thanks to Phil from Luing for mentioning the 'Halcyon'. I knew her well when I was a boy in Tiree. She was what is called a 'billy-boat', i.e. she began her life as a sailing-boat (ketch-rigged, I think), and was then converted to motor (diesel) propulsion. She always looked liked a sailing coaster, and was still active in the early 1960s. She was built originally in Hessle, by Henry Scarr (I will check the details) in the early 1900s. (She was not therefore a Thames barge.) I knew her captain and owner, Willie MacMillan from Campbeltown, very well - he was a very fine man and a family friend - and I was in his cabin on numerous occasions. The 'Halcyon' used her sail regularly. I remember seeing her sailing from Tiree on a glorious evening in early June, with her red sail set. Captain MacMillan was anxious to get home quickly after discharging his cargo of coal in Tiree! I wish I had been able to photograph her - a most interestin vessel.
