Rathlin
I've travelled far over this country
But there's one spot I'd love to be,
That's Rathlin Island off north Antrim
Seven miles across the sea,
Standing on the mainland its just a lump of ground
But to further my investigations
I travelled through Rathlin sound.
I got the boat for Rathlin along the 'castle wall'
I hear big Dominic saying
"Take care now, watch don't fall."
Within an hour of boarding
My face it fills with smiles,
As I step onto the fairest of the Emerald Isles
I stroll along the quayside
To a lapping of the wave,
People come to welcome me
From as far as Bruce's Cave
The islanders are friendly folk
As you and I would agree
Who live on that small lump of ground
Seven miles across the sea.
I leave the quay and I take the road
I pass the manor low and behold
Built in the 17 hundreds, as a mark of respect
To whom I can't read the name on the plaque.
A day or two is spent travelling over this beautiful isle,
From South Point to West Point just to see Paddy's broad smile,
Now he can tell some quare stories the best there has ever been,
About his jaunts through Dublin town far away from his cliff top scene.
He has a radio close at hand
Which can contact many's a different land,
He spake's of the wrecks that lie on the store
That definitely is paddy for he knows the score.
I now leave Paddy and go by the quay
Where a boat lies anchored waiting for me
And as my thoughts wonder of the days that have passed
Of Rathlin Island they could not last
And as I wave goodbye from the boat
And tighten up my duffle coat
I'll know some day that I have found
The promised land across the sound.
