I remember that tour Frank. Saw it at the Caird Hall. Radio Stars were the other support band.

Which reminds me of my first gig proper - Rainbow at the Edinburgh Playhouse in 1976. They had what I thought at the time, an odd choice of support band. If you play this you'll see what I mean. This was their one hit, would be good to hear it again.

Don't give the teeniest tiniest hoot what the snooty musos say...Coldplay at Hampden was one of the best gigs I've been to. The Daughter and I went together and had a fantastic time. Their first support act was White Lies, who reminded me a bit of Joy Division, but the main support was as much a reason to have bought the tickets as going to see Coldplay was. It was great when he came on stage to perform with the band too...money very well spent:

The 'Be-Stiff' Tour featuring Elvis Costello & The Attractions, Ian Dury & The Blockheads, Wreckless Eric, Nick Lowe and Larry Wallis. Stiff Records chartered a train to tour the UK, stopping for gigs throughout.

Memorable doesn't come close ...

Who was supporting who? Happy to let the GIO jury chose band + song ...

I stand corrected ... it was 1977, it was the '5 Live Stiffs' tour, and it was the Apollo.

Mixed it with the 1978 'Be-Stiff' tour ...... which was by train, which was at Strathclyde Uni, and which did feature Lena Lovitch, Rachel Sweet, Wrecless Eric, Jona Lewie and Mickey Jupp

Lots of good support acts but missed quite a few due to the old 'just stay for another beer it'll only be the support the noo' or 'they'll no be oan till at least half nine'
I'm sure you've all heard it.

But when I did wise up

Jess Roden Band supported Roxy Music Glasgow Apollo '74 or thereabouts. The Country Life Album was just out I'm sure
JRB were excellent, still unsung heroes in my book, never quite made the headlines, bit of a mystery to me why not. Think it was more difficult for supports as you couldn't just go home and download what you had just heard for example.

I remember that Nils Lofgren tour (saw it at the Caird Hall too). He used to do that leap using a trampet. But I have no recollection of Tom Petty being the support (maybe I was in the bar wi Al).
Must try and look it up.

ABERFELDY supported THE MAGIC BAND at The Arches and were very apprehensive about how they would be received. They need not have worried as MAGIC BAND audiences are music aficionados and highly receptive to anything new or unusual. They were warmly received by the audience despite their normal, single time signature, melodic, tonal tunes and understandable lyrics.

TURN ME TOWARDS THE LIGHT from DO WHATEVER TURNS YOU ON by ABERFELDY for JESUS {:-{)}

It's an old story recounted for the umpteeth time but in greater detail this time.

The first gig I went to was Ten Years After in the Usher Hall, sometime in the spring of 1970 (maybe it was 71).

The support band were a folksy duo and the singer did much of the set sitting crossed legged on the stage in a kind of meditative pose, strumming away and singing while his colleague banged on the bongos. It was interesting enough, though we were all really up for some speed of light blues playing from Alvin Lee- and no one was paying that much attention.

Finally,as the set came to an end,the singer stood up, picked up a white electric guitar and said "this is our new single" which lifted the tempo, and their career, about 1,000,000:00%.

#19 a few folk did that last week at Joe's concert. Too bad they missed the first hour of his show since there was no support. No of course I didn't snigger. Wish I'd been at the GRCH last night, think I had a school-borne virus last week spoiling my fun.

Anyway, I suppose the most memorable support I saw was Robert Cray at the Tina Turner gig in SECC. First and last time I'd ever go there for a concert, but Robert was fantastic and I went several times to see him at the Playhouse after that.

however, in the midst of all this nostalgia I'd like to put forward a starting-out band, The Imagineers (for the umpteenth time) whom I've seen twice supporting Kassidy. They're great live and this is a great song:

memorable for the wrong reasons? Skid Row featuring Gary Moore, total shambles, booed off the stage; and I'd love to suggest Kassidy's Barrowlands support, We Are The Physics, for my daughter's boyfriend, who loved them (as did most of the crowd) and no-one could fault their energy; they do what they do very well and very enthusiastically, but - well go listen to them yourselves.

I'm sure Joe was the man, dead jealous, was working away from home when tickets came out and it passed me by, was ragin'
Was he good?

Similar thing, was lucky enough to get tickets for Kool & The Gang at the Playhouse, early 90s?, happy to be corrected though, they were on stage about half seven and proceeded to play every song in their catalogue, perhaps the best concert I have ever been to, well until someone asks me gain,,,, :-)

Steve Gibbons Band, I definitely saw them and was hooked, canny remember if they were supporting Who or Skynyrd.
Thought when I saw The Who Small Faces were the support, canny find any evidence of that though so memory might be playing tricks.

#27 Al, he was fantastic, gave us 2 and a half hours solid music, played his heart out, sang his heart out - and for some reason that I do now think was that I wasn't 100%, I came away quite flat. That's unheard of for me. I do have a wee niggly thought that maybe the heroics pass me by - I'm not a fan of the, admittedly unbelievably dexterous, Woke Up Dreaming, it's just all showing off. But I've been listening to him all week on the iPod and still can't work out why I wasn't buzzing. There was one wonderful track that I can't identify - I think it was maybe a cover of Who's Been Talking, but I can't find it anywhere recorded by him. Sloe Gin was great - and so on- ah well, next time GRCH. Ticket prices may vary, so do parking charges in inverse proportion so all works out the same and Glasgow's seat are more comfy!
