google just disnae cut the mustard.
i can vividly recall the band standin' on thon bbc stage and they were a' lookin' cheery and i'm sure one o' them had a whip ( i really don't no' why any o' yiz are sniggerin')....i'm sure thats when the expression 'crackin' the whip' was invented.....the point is caller....i don't think any o' them was singing , they were a' mime in (the sort o' detail sadly lacking on google)

and also they got better as a group, much better.

Thery're right enough - I'd forgotten all about this track, probably unfashionable at the time, but listening again, really well put together. There's a you tube video of this being performed at the Apollo in 79 which is worth a listen - I've forgottten how to attach.

What have intros to do with trees?

The descending chromatic intro of Michelle is repeated at the end - "I will say the only words I know that you'll understand."

The first section of Band On The Run lasts 1:20 and it would stretching the term to call it an "intro".

I fear you are distorting the facts to accommodate your thesis.

I see your hero is releasing an album of standards - the last refuge of the uninspired (Rod Stewart, Robbie Williams .....)

Frank. when he bought you that pint did he confirm or deny the oft cited story of Eddie Cochran's guitar...namely that on the fateful night of the crash that he, Dave Dee himself, was the young Police Constable on duty who recovered his guitar from the wreck. Did he also confirm that it was the young Marc Bolan (nee Feld) who had carried Cochran's guitar out to his cab after his gig that fateful night. Three legends and one guitar on the same night.

Not my words, faither, it would have taken me much longer to get to the point, I'm sure - though it has to be said that what passes for feature writing in the music press is of a lamentably low standard, so no disagreement there.Having said that,I think the broadsheets have dumbed down to the level of the music press.

I had hitherto believed that Michelle was John's song, but doubtless McCartney contributed - it's hard to believe the respected music magazine Mojo would be wrong about something so fundamental? Agree about Band On The Run, two songs merged into one.

Still, the intro to Goodnight Tonight remains charming, but the track does have its own frustrations - I think he could have done more with the song - but that's an old complaint of mine - a kind of sloppiness bourne of intellectual arrogance which manifests itself in great tunes and good ideas being delivered as sub-standard product.

The same kind of sloppy writing that permeates the music press: anything goes.

The drummer was called Mick, not Mitch. Is Mick even a nickname? I would argue that Mick is merely an abbreviation of Michael.


Of course, in modern Scotland calling anyone Mick can get you arrested and charged with racially insulting all persons hailing from Hibernia. Unless the person or persons do not hail from Hibernia but do identify themselves as Roman Catholics, in which case the charge will be sectarianism, and you will find yourself incarcerated in a cell recently vacated by a rapist and/or murderer who is no longer regarded as posing a danger to the public. Been listening to the Codiene Velvet Club on Spotify - it must be very frustrating for those involved to produce music of this quality and for it to get nowhere. Mind you, it's half way between The Fratelli's and Caro Emerald, but isn't quite either. Maybe they should have put it out as The Fratelli's -which it more or less is, with a female vocal. Particularly like Begging Bowl Blues. Do you think 'John Fratelli' qualifies for the theme?
