We are detective...

Bryan Burnett | 20:02 UK time, Monday, 9 May 2011

Have you ever wondered where Danny Wilson ended up after their stint in the charts was over? Did Marilyn ditch the make-up and find himself a job in an office after he realised he was no longer going to feature on the front cover of Smash Hits? Did Judy Tzuke cope when the glory years were over? Tomorrow's theme is 'whatever happened to...' and will feature the artists who enjoyed chart success then disappeared off the radar.

I hope you're not referring to Buddy Holly.

    Re Judy Tzuke:

Still recording and putting records out - recently worked with Morcheeba recording vocals for their 'Dive Deep' album.

This is a truly remarkable record which should be given out on the NHS to cure a range of ailments, but particularly stress related mental disorders.

Enjoy The Ride - Morcheeba - featuring Judy Tzuke

Blue Chair - Morcheeba - featuring Judy Tzuke

Simply beautiful. Deserves to be heard.

But it won't be... I feel certain they've got a thing against Morcheeba they just won't play it....

And...What ever happened to Morcheeba?...I hate it when that happens to bands...(Dreadzone) they just seem to be regarded as passe no matter how good the music is... it's ludicrous.... so I won't hold my breath, but I'll hopefully have time to hand the CD into Pacific Quay tomorrow so that 'we haven't got it' doesn't stand in the way of hearing some real class.

Henri, felt sure you'd mention 80s band Furniture ('Brilliant Mind') and the connection to Transglobal Underground!

Thanks Julie ...yep - I will .... I delivered a Transglobal Underground CD to Pacific Quay with some Hannah Banana loaves a year or so ago.

And the guys from Big Audio Dynamite went off to Dreadzone...

who knows, could be my night?..... but I don't think so somehow....

A notable one-hit wonder even if that's not the theme. She did have a hit then fell into obscurity:
Charlene I've Never Been To Me

    Whatever happened to
Andrew Ridgeley Totally overshadowed by George, even in Wham's heyday. George may not be at his prime, but he's there. Just. Where is Andrew now?
    Everything She Wants

and then - from the ridgeleydiclous to the sublime - what's
Cat Stevens Wild World been doing?

(all of these questions are easily answered with a quick wiki or google - I just want to hear the songs)

  • Comment number 7.

#3 don't be so defeatist! You've had TU played, there's no reason to suppose they won't play Morcheeba.
BTW - Enjoy The Ride & Blue Chair - good shouts. Nice and mellow.

  • Comment number 8.

as I've cleared the room again, another couple worth hearing....even if only IMO.

    Whatever happened to
    Skunk Anansie? Hedonism or Secretly

Justin, Justin, where is Justin now?
    What's Justin doing now?
    Just, where is Justin now?

In fact, now that I come to think of it, I also delivered a Dreadzone CD to Pacific Quay.....

Anyway, Julie is quite right to point out that after Furniture split up Tim Whelan and Hamilton Lee then set up the amazing Transglobal Underground,a ground breaking world and dance music troupe with an ever changing line up - that line up contained the belly dancing world music superstar, Natasha Atlas among others.Amazing to consider the distance travelled between Brilliant Mind and Chariots..

There's a number of totally tremendous TU tracks that I'd really love to hear on GIO but they'll not get played so we might have to play it safe and request Chariots - Transglobal Underground which is melodic and radio friendly, dedicated to Jim frae Erskine, who didn't get it the first time.

Greg Roberts and Dan Donovan of Big Audio Dynamite went on to form Dreadzone with Tim Bran (Julian Cope's sound engineer) and their early backing vocalists were Melanie Blatt, Denise Van Outen and Alison Goldfrapp.

I think I've been running this campaign for a couple of years now, so it would be good to hear something by Dreadzone.

American Dread - Dreazone ( with Woodie Guthrie on the intro)

And I commend these post pop career performances to the blogotariat and our musical appreciating masters at Pacific Quay

  • Comment number 17.

In the book 'Freakenomics' there is an interesting chapter explaining 'why most drug dealers live with their mum' ( in fact it's because drugs work like Tupperware - there's only money at the top of the franchise).

Interestingly, the music business must be the same way - very few make it past the third album - but if you do, you've got a career, one way or another.

But lots don't, hence, most former pop stars who are ravaged by drugs, (like Marilyn and Syd Barratt) end up living with their mum.

I know it isn`t crystal clear, but isnt the point of the theme to say where these once famous hitsters ended up? Preferably in a `Why I never?` situation?

Who Knows What Love Is - Starwberry Switchblade

Who knows where they went after releasing their one and only album? It could easily have featured on the recent theme of albums with no duff tracks IMO. I played it a lot in the 80s when I needed to hear something a bit mellow and was disappointed that there was no follow up.

#45 (Some of) The Silencers are still going, but haven't recorded for several years now - JJ Gilmour tours solo, Jim McDermott, drummer and Kevin's brother also left and I think plays drums for Justin Currie (Norrie?). I saw the Silencers in 2007, a concert for guitarist Cha Burns who died 6 weeks later. It was without doubt one of the best concerts I've ever been at - unbelievable atmosphere. Son of Jimme O'Neill is one half of Martin and James, who make some very melodic tunes.

disagree: the best thing to come out of Ireland were a band called The Would Be's, brilliant, released a few singles and a couple of EP's and then the singer decided to go back to Education and they mysteriously chucked it?

I've misunderstood the theme. It's not a where are they now. So what happened to Stretch who had one of the songs of the 70's. Put together to perform as Fleetwood Mac on tour cos of a contractual dispute they then became Stretch, had the one huge hit and disappeared.

Why did you do it / Stretch
