Ironic - Alanis Morrissette

Occasionally, you hear a record and think 'that's great' and later realise that you've rushed out and bought 'Jagged Little Pill' by Alanis Morrissette.

Three days later you can't understand why her endless whining and girning was ever thought endearing. You never play it again - just relieved you're 'not the boyfriend'.

It must be one of my least favourite records of all time - and I'm not entirely sure if it qualifies for tonight's theme but there is a track on that album called 'Ironic' - I suppose it's to edify us with a list of ironic circumstances, but if they qualify as irony, they are really rather poor examples.

In my view, a man who is terrified of flying and who is subsequently killed in a plane crash is not an example of irony because irony is about opposites,usually couched as wry humour.

Consequently, this truly appalling track 'Ironic' - displays an adolescent understanding of irony - it lacks the subtlety and humour we associate with irony and sums up why the album is quickly insufferable.

And isn't it ironic?

I don't think our tiny nation should have their tea-time ruined with this drivel.

Funnily enough I was in Newport, Wales on business last summer and found myself in Thunder Road. This was in the summer with my friend Mary. We put Roy Orbison on the Radio and there really was a bit of magic that night...

strange thing is we are going again this Monday. I can hardly believe the co-incidence....
