We open another window on our advent calender tonight and there's a Christmas treat behind it. It's panto time, but what songs does your annual visit to the pantomime make you think of? There are some great suggestions on yesterday's blog post but how about things like Genie In The Bottle or Aladdin Sane? So what are the songs that could feature in Cinderella, babes In The Wood, Aladdin and the rest. Miss Babs will be producing tonight in a dual role of fairy godmother/wicked stepmother but when she appears will you shout out and let me know boys and girls?
Despite the laid back music, last night's show was manic behind the scenes. With everything that was going on behind the scenes I didn't have time to announce the answers of the Silent Night mash-up or read out the bloggers Christmas Carol. I'll do both of those tonight! Apologies...
One of the best Panto Dames I've seen was Stanley Baxter: a real Dame (Shirley Bassey), singing a song by a Baxter (Tom)...'Almost There'...superb song it is too!
Dame Shirley's at it again in the song 'Apartment' where she mentions several fairy tale characters...I like this song...it was the ringtone a friend used for her estate agent when she was flat-hunting! I'd be sitting at work when suddenly Shirley's voice would come belting out from a handbag!
others: Inspiral (magic) Carpets - 'This is how it feels' (Alladin) Frank Turner -'I Still Believe; (in fairies? - Peter Pan) Nirvana - 'About a (principal) Girl'
The first panto I ever saw was A Wish for Jamie, with Kenneth Mackellar as Jamie and Rikki Fulton as dame. It was a huge thing for us going up to Glasgow for the day, having lunch in Wendy's (I asked for mushrooms on toast - bizarre - and such a heap of mushrooms arrived that I couldn't eat them for years after), then the panto itself, with, in one scene, a moving train dining carriage and of course loads of spilled dinners and hilarity.
(filed for the Sunday post)
Wishing Well - Free
Wishing on a Star - Paul Weller
Magic Carpet Ride - Steppenwolf
She's Coming Around - The Coral
Midnight Runner - Pendulum
Christmastime - the Smashing Pumpkins
Robinson Crusoe in New York - the Silencers
Lil' Red Riding Hood - Bowling for Soup - or the original by Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs, which I'd totally forgotten about, but remember as being quite a favourite when I were but a wee lass

I've been listening to my favourite Bonnie Raitt album, which has reminded me of a question you asked some time ago that I neglected to answer.
The gentleman singing harmony vocals on Bonnie's rendition of 'Dimming of the Day' is Paul Brady.
