Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 15:09 UK time, Monday, 7 June 2010

orchestra.jpgI'm hoping to persuade Miss Babs to put on a ballgown and her posh pearls for Thursday's theme, however there is more chance of me getting smacked across the wrists with her baton! Get It On goes classical for the night. It's certainly going to be different but I know that you won't let me down with the usual varied mix of quality suggestions.

Monday
Stuart McMillan suggests days of the week as a theme. These can be in the song or artist title so that's anything from the Happy Mondays to Friday, I'm in Love.

Tuesday
As the World Cup kicks off on Friday we thought we'd get ourselves in the mood with a suitable theme. So, it's songs about and music from the nations in the World Cup. Will you score with Big In Japan or will Spanish Stroll have you cheering from the sidelines?

Wednesday
Tonight we are looking for your recommendations and top tips. The theme is roughly 'if you like x, then you'll like y'. For instance, if you like Lady Gaga then you'll probably like Grace Jones. If you like Arcade Fire then you might like Echo And The Bunnymen. It's your chance to turn on your fellow music lovers to acts they previously might not have considered.

Thursday
The 成人快手 Scottish Symphony Orchestra celebrates it's 75th birthday with a big weekend of orchestral music at The City Halls in Glasgow so to celebrate Get It On goes classical for one night only. It's two hours of the best classical pieces ever - as chosen by you.

    In May, 1996, one of my pals phoned up and said;

"We're all going to the Barrowland on Wednesday to see Whigfield, you commin?"

Our lot have fairly eclectic taste, so, somewhat surprised, I found myself agreeing to go.

It wasn't until I turned up in the pub beforehand that I realised that he'd transmitted the name incorrectly: we were about to witness the first performance in Scotland of Leftfield.

What a night that was! The band came on stage - one of them walk up to a keyboard and press a bass note. The note comes along the floor and goes through you. Never experienced anything like it. The Ballroom had complaints about the noise from 5 streets away.

Of course, it could have been the booze, but I don't think so.

    Thursday

I'm hugely up for Thursday and our adventure with requests for classical music.

'Benedictus' from 'The Armed Man' - Karl Jenkins

Radio friendly, moving, melodic and, with the hope of peace, written for those involved in soldiering. Beautiful, your producer will know how to take off the first couple of minutes, which repeat before the choir come in.Karl Jenkins used to be the keyboard player in Soft Machine in another life.

Samuel Barber - Agnus Dei -String Quartet in B minor Op 11: David Hill (not of Slade fame) and the Winchester Cathedral Choir. (EMI 50999 2 28275 2 4 )

Everyone knows Barber's 'Adagio for Strings' - this is the Choral version which, if anything, is even more beautiful and immensely more powerful. You'll be blown away.

    Spiral - Sir Paul McCartney

a little known and hugely under rated classical composer...

I鈥檝e picked one team from each area, so:

    HOSTS:

South Africa - Grammy award winning singer and Human Rights activist

    Miriam Makeba - Pata Pata

    AFRICA QUALIFYING:

Nigeria - I would like to request a Tom Russell song about the time he lived in Nigeria

Tom Russell - East of Woodstock, West of Vietnam

鈥淚n 1969 I stepped off a plane in Ibadan, Nigeria and a someone stuck a rifle up against my throat. Evidently I'd been taking illegal pictures over a war zone in Biafra, and now I was being carted off to have my priorities corrected by two machine gun toting Yoruba army thugs in dark glasses. I was saved by a U.S. ambassador, who bribed the lads. It was my first day in Africa鈥 baptism.鈥

This is a brilliant record and Calexio provided the band.

    ASIA QUALIFYING:

Japan - Magokoro Brothers - My Back Pages, strangely brilliant.

    EUROPE QUALIFYING:

France - Camera Obscura - French Navy , this time they might need them

    SOUTH AMERICA QUALIFYING:

Argentina, Don鈥檛 Cry for Me Argentina, Julie Covington

    NORTH, CENTRAL AMERICA AND QUALIFYING:

Mexico, if you only ever own one Irish Mexican record make it San Petrito by the Chieftains and Ry Cooder featuring amongst others Los Tigres del Norte

Chieftains, Ry Cooder, Linda Rostand and Los Tigres del Norte - A la orilla de un palmar

    ASIA/OCEANIA PLAY-OFF

I don't associate Lady Gaga with Grace Jones although I like them both, still, I can feel it in my bones: " if you like Deacon Blue's 'Dignity' you'll like 'Sunshine on Leith' as by covered by MacIntosh Ross.

ARGHHH....... a night of Bryan selecting his favourite 80's music by Scottish bands... let's see how can we get Big Country on just one more time.....'into the valley'...here goes...actually, the theme could be really good, I suppose, but I'm fearful.

  • Comment number 36.

I'm very interested in your profanity filter. Does posting a song by someone from Northern Ireland count against it, somehow? If yes, why? I just requested Duke Special "Our Love Goes Deeper Than This" It was "filtered". for profanity, or summat close. To make things clear, I'm married to a Catholic. This form of censorship smacks of laziness. And more besides that is even more disturbing.
It's a cracking song, don't let the censors fool you. and vive la diference.

Mr. Kite - Beatles - Bass harmonica

Lady Jane - Rolling Stones - Dulcimer
Wild Thing - Troggs - Ocarina, fairy dust

I must say, I still can't quite get the theme - I mean, the first presumption is that anyone is interested enough in the first part to care a hoot about the second.

Let's take the first presumption ' you like Lady Gaga' means 'you might be interested in Blodwyn Pig'. Most people have never heard of Blodwyn Pig, so how they'll stay interested in Lady Gaga is a mystery to me.

Henri I was not trying to do a direct comparison with Paolo / Josh or indeed anyone. I think this theme is a great opportunity to point people in the direction of things you think are better. And similarly point out new artists which you think might appeal to listeners.

    If you like:

Oasis (setting aside any jibes about Oasis) then you cannot fail to love Ian Hunter, especially the All American Alien Boy lp with Jaco Pastorius and David Sanborn in the band.

Also for Thursday, if eligible, there's a fabulous if perhaps derivative operatic/orchestral piece called "They'll remember you" by John Ottoman written for the Valkyrie soundtrack.

#97 - if you like Bettye LaVette you may like The River by Audra Mae
#99 - not fussed, ELP idea is just nostalgia. Any version would be really good.
