Last week's themes were great fun and we got through some terrific tunes. You can catch up with the playlists online or listen again if you fancy it. Don't be shy about contributing to the blog. Feel free to leave your suggestions and join in the (hopefully!) friendly banter. You can also call or text during the show or email me...
Monday
It's a night of Jive Talkin' on Get It On. Let's have your songs featuring, fab, funky, groovy, cool, and boogie. Whether I will be able to 'get down on it' remains to be seen....
Tuesday
It's the 50th anniversary of the . On tonight's show we'll feature music from the artists who are no longer with us.
Wednesday
Will it be 'Sexy Boy' or 'Fat Bottomed Girls'? Are you 'Glad All Over' or is 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' a more accurate reflection of the way you feel? Tonight's theme is the songs that could have been written about you...
Thursday
Bryan Adamson suggests a night of great covers - not cover versions but the artwork that features on the greatest single and album sleeves ever....
I think it must be the chunky jewelery that swung it for him, but I'm thrilled that tonight's producer Muslim has been voted one of the most stylish blokes in the building.
The team who make Style On Trial for ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ4 have organised a bit of fun for the folk who work here, and tomorrow lunchtime will be handing out an award for the most stylish dresser in the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ.
Although there's a cool, skinny guy in a cardigan who is very 'on trend', I fear Muslim's main rival has got to be Jazzhouse presenter, Stephen Duffy .
However I have told Muslim that it takes more than a pointy jazz beard to make you a style icon! As you can tell from the photograph, shy boy Muslim is mortified about the whole thing...
There is link between Archie Fisher and Sex In The City. Don't expect him to turn up for his next gig in a pair of Manalos though. It's just that Archie's live guests tonight are The Cast, whose recording of Auld Lang Syne had something of a starring role in the film version of the TV show. He's also going to be joined by folkie legend Arlo Guthrie for a memorable night of live music.
Lots of emails coming in commenting on the that John Martyn has died. There are some nice comments from fans elsewhere on the blog. We'll definitely include one of his songs tonight and there will be more of his music on tonight's Iain Anderson show. As a tribute to John Martyn, Radio Scotland is repeating one of our Classic Album series - where Davey Scott looked at the success of Solid Air. You can catch this special programme this Sunday at five minutes past 3.
Poor old Sam got a bit of a ribbing tonight after her excellent telephone notetaking skills were called into question when DC in Cellardyke called in with his suggestion. Then again maybe some folk are in need of a loaf after they've been working out!
I have been stood up! Tragic I know, but I don't feel too bad as the guy I've been stood up for has been described as the 'handsome poster boy of nu-folk'. So there.
In this pic he actually looks like the Ziggy Stardust of nu-folk which is quite a concept to be dealing with.
Tonight I was supposed to have a 'hot date' with producer Kirsten to go and see Kate Rusby at Celtic Connections. She's now pulled out as she's got to work on Mary Ann Kennedy's Global Gathering instead.
They are doing another live show from the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ foyer tonight and the star guest is the aforementioned poster boy, .His music is brilliant and his last album won lots of folk album of the year awards. I've been listening to it this afternoon and I love it.
If you miss the live broadcast tonight then stop by the Celtic Connections website as there will be audio and video clips on there over the next couple of days.
For me it's going to be a good night. Ok, I don't get to hang out with Kirsten or Kate but after my show it's just a stroll down three flights of stairs to enjoy a free gig from "...the greatest leap forward in folk for 30 years". All I have to do is get Kirsten to keep me a seat and have a large gin and tonic ready for five past eight...
I thought that our 'farming' theme would bring out some good puns and I wasn't wrong. Here's my top 5...
My Coo ca choo - Alvin Stardust
Smokey Robinson - Tractors My Tears
Anything by The Style Council
Only Ewe - Yazoo
I Herd It Through The Grapevine - Marvin Gaye
There was also the most intriguing suggestion of the night which came from Cindy and Co: 'Phil Collins doing Old McDonald!" It does exist and you can see a of it here. Thanks to everyone who got in touch over this one.
There are not many programmes which have played Jimmy Shand and Jan Hammer in the same week! I look forward to getting an equally diverse list in for this week . Email your suggestions or call or text during the show...
Monday - Due to popular demand on the Get In On blog, tonight's theme is songs and artists connected to the Farmyard! Size Of A Cow perhaps? Get in touch and Get It On...
Tuesday - Joe The Jam Man suggests 'revolutions'. Anything to do with circular shapes and movements. You could pick Round Round or Watching the Wheels.
Wednesday - Double languages. An evening of songs sung in English that have a foreign language interlude.
Thursday - I name that tune in one! Tracks that you recognise from the opening note, as suggested by P McCafferty.
This made me smile....It's Paolo Pablo's suggestions for tonight's show which celebrates the classic record labels and the acts associated with them:
"DECCA Cards by Wink Martindale
EPIC Faith no More
Like a VIRGIN Madonna
yMCA Village People
American PYE Don McLean"
The Messiah lives....and he listens to Get It On. Well, according to this request that appeared on my screen!!!
Thankfully it was a typo by my hard working producer. It did make me smile though at the thought that JC might be asking for Lou Reed. Chris in Whitecross got a bit of shock but called to confirm that the song was indeed meant for him.
Seasick Steve, Neil Diamond, Kanye West and Beck make strange bedfellows, but interestingly they've all been nominated as best international male at this year's . Nice to see Fleet Foxes pick up two nominations for international album and group.
Does anyone else think that the international categories are the most interesting this year? The British ones seem to be dominated by corporate rock like Duffy and Coldplay. Mind you there's no point in disguising the fact that The Brits are about awarding commercial success. Why else would the X Factor contestants doing Hero be nominated?
Can't say I'm that excited by this year's Brits bunch, but then again I've been in a grump about them since 1986 when Huey Lewis and The News beat Talking Heads to best international group. A travesty....
It does seem ironic that on a momentous day such as this our theme tonight is....trivia! I wonder if this day will be one that we'll talk about in years to come. Listening to the stunning 'A Change Is Gonna Come' montage at the end of Newsdrive, the impact of today's events and what they meant really hit home.
It's been a struggle trying to prepare the show on one headphone and listening to events in Washington on the other. Not sure if Barack's speech worked with Cyndi Lauper blasting out underneath his words.
Tonight' theme is simple: ask for whatever you want but you must include a bit of trivia about your chosen song. I'll attempt to put the info on the blog throughout the show...
Bohemian rhapsody is the only number one hit that doesn't mention its title in the song! From big c in Edinburgh.
Jimmy Shand's hit - The Bluebell Polka (1955) was produced by George Martin, who was later to work with the Beatles. Shand was the first - but not the last - Auchtermuchty - based act to have a top 20 hit, as he was followed by the Proclaimers.
Steven
Eddie Reader used to sing backing vocals for the gang of four play i found that essence rare and get rid of my man flu please - Martin Aberdeen
Chicago trivia...This band was originally named The Chicago Transit Authority, but shortened it to Chicago after they were threatened with legal action by the City of Chicago, which happened to use the same name for their public transportation department - Roger from Uddingston
Mott the hoople were the first band to play broadway and were the only band queen ever supported ! all the way from memphis please . Duncan aberdeen .
Apparently the drummer who appeared on The Marvelettes 1961 No.1 hit 'Mr Postman' was Marvin Gaye! - Keen Gelly
I have one suggestion for a song tonight and that is ABBA - Supertrouper and the trivia is for the band. Before they could use the name ABBA they had to get permission to use the name from a well known fish company over here in Sweden called.... ABBA.A company bit like john west in the UK. - Angela Kirkwood, Solna,Sweden
Coffee, cigarettes, chocolate and a glass or two of wine might sound like might sound like Keith Richard's breakfast ingredients but they all feature in tonight's show where the theme is 'vices'.
We all have them, but has anyone written a song about yours? My vice would be buying too many pairs of trainers so maybe I could could have something by Sneaker Pimps.
I realise as far as vices go it's not exactly 'living life on the edge' but it's a habit that out of control and I feel a spell in trainer rehab is coming.
Please don't be shy about sharing your sceret vices. Give Sam a call during the show on 055 92 95 00...
Thanks for a memorable week of suggestions for the show. The 'unexpected covers' programme was one of the busiest in a long time. Apologies if I didn't get round to reading our your text or e-mail but i do appreciate every single one that comes in.
Hopefully we have some good ones lined up for you this week. Tuesday night's 'trivia' theme should be good fun and I intend to put the best of the fascinating facts on the blog...
Monday
Lynn from Madison,Wisconsin has suggested that tonight we celebrate our vices! Lynn's chosen songs include Addicted To Love and Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk. Share your secret vices by e-mail or leave a comment on the blog...
Tuesday
Capt Ramius picks a trivia night theme for tonight. Ask for whatever you like, however every song suggestion has to come with an interesting fact or a bit of trivia! For instance you could ask for 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling'. Fact- the most played song on radio across the world! Keep the facts rolling in - the geekier the better....
Wednesday
Technology is the theme so Computer Love by Kraftwerk is a must. Or maybe something by AC/DC or Electric Light Orchestra is in order? You decide....
Thursday
As Motown celebrates it's 50th anniversary we feature the classic record labels and the bands associated with them. Get in touch via e-mail, leave a comment on the blog or text and call during the show...
I've taken a few minutes out during 'Stairway To Heaven' to update the blog. The unexpected cover versions show is one of the busiest in a long while and it could run on for another two hours tonight - not sure how Archie would feel about that though! Ant on the text suggested a version of Summer In The City by Tik and Tok, the electro-mime duo who were famous for their robotic dancing back in the mid 80s. That sent me off searching for a picture of them online and I came across this one which made me smile....and not just at their bizzare sense of style.
The reason was that it was a photoshoot for Patches magazine and I was there on the shoot. As I was the pop editor at the time it might have even been my idea. Oh the shame!! Richard,
King of trivia also contributed to our Tik and Tok fest withe following trivia: *** - One of them went on to be an extra in Star Wars! *** - Before going solo the boys were in a band called Shock with Carole Caplin, the woman who went on to be Cherie Blair's stylist! Wonder what she made of the tigerskin shoulder pads...
I love it when our listeners reveal their connections to songs on the show. This can be anything from 'first dance at our wedding' to 'I went to school with the bass player in the band'.
Last night's theme was 'the art of sampling' and one of the more unusual celebrity connections was e-mailed in by Alan Cameron in Dumfries:
" I'm a musician and I bought a sampler about 20 years ago from a programmer who worked with legendary producer Trevor Horn (Buggles fame and many others).Horn sampled orchestra hits and guitar riffs and incorporated them in the 1983 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' by Yes of which he was a member for a short time. I've got the actual sample disk with these samples on it - it came with the sampler and a 100 other disks! It's hiding in my loft somewhere - must dig it out!"
I had to play the song and it tickled me to think that the samples featured on that very record were languishing in a loft in Dumfries
"Let's have some more challenging themes," complained John in Sheildhall who felt the first week back was too easy. I hope this lot give you something to think about. All of the themes this week have been suggested by GIO listeners so please don't be shy about sending in your ideas.
Monday:
Rhythmheid suggested a night of samples. From Funky Drummer to Unfinished Symphony, tonight's theme features the best samples and the most sampled tunes. I'm happy to play the songs that feature them and the original track that was sampled. Send you suggestions to get iton@bbc.co.uk or why not leave a comment on the blog?
Tuesday:
Tonight we are Going Underground - the London underground that is. Both Neil in Edinburgh and Valerie in Shetland have suggested this as a theme. Waterloo, Victoria or baker Street. Choose your stop and e-mail in your suggestion. Mind the gap though....
Wednesday:
1,2,3,4....songs that count themselves in is the theme tonight. Patrick McCafferty has come up with the theme and there are hundreds of great examples. If you've got as suggestion then get it on by emailing, texting or calling during the show...
Thursday:
A night of unexpected cover versions has been asked for several times, so get the thinking caps on and see what you come up with. Can it get any weirder than Leonard Cohen on The X Factor or maybe Richard Thompson doing Britney? You decide...
Coming up soon:
Controversial pop stars, technology, trivia night, vices and classic labels...
This week's theme seems to be going well. We've already done songs with two words in the title, songs with three, so tonight it's four word titles.
I was looking forward to playing The Four Tops doing The Same Old Song which was suggested by Alan in Kirkcaldy, but when I looked it up I realised the actual title is: It's The Same Old Song.
Lizzie, who produces our Zones content has suggested we do a similar theme with band names. I like the idea although we may struggle a bit by the time we get to Thursday.Mind you Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers could feature as could The Jesus And Mary Chain.
We could keep the theme running over two weeks as the band with the longest name are the brilliantly named: And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead.
Don't think anyone can match their ten word name, but it could have been a whole lot more impressive. Their original band name was The Clouds That Fondle Jagged Crags And Raging Storms Conspire And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead.
Catchy!
I've just finished putting together tonight's 'theme montage' and realised that the King was the king of 'two word titles' ( that's tonight's theme by the way).
I did start off with some Beatles, Springsteen and Prince but then after listening to Hound Dog, King Creole and Burnin' Love I decided to go for an all Elvis montage.
Searching for some background material I found the the online . You just type in a word and it will search all the Elvis sites to locate your topic. For instance, a search for the word Scotland brings up Elvis Touch - the Glasgow branch of his fan club.
Better still, you can while away a good half hour clicking on random Elvis sites covering everything from Elvis' journey in the 'afterlife' to sites offering quite remarkable Elvis jewellery. The diamond pendant is a must for me. At only £53.12, you'll be thrilled to hear that "The movable frame around the portrait means that it dances with your every turn."
A happy new year to all who listen in, email, text call or blog and make Get It On such fun to do. I hope we've got some good themes to tempt you with this year. The first week of themes has been suggested by Jim in Erskine. At least I hope it's Jim in Erskine***. I've left the 'themes folder' in work and I'm trying to up date the blog at home on Saturday teatime so I have no way of checking!
Jim ( hopefully!) has suggested that we do a week long theme of two word titles, three word titles, four word titles and on Thursday's show five word titles. Simple idea but I think it's a cracker. We could start with 'Beat It', move on to 'Life With You', follow it up with 'God Save The Queen' and round off the week with 'A Day In The Life'. Let's see what you come up with...
*** Ooops. It wasn't Jim after all but Joe in Linlithgow. See comment no 28 for his suggestions.
Monday 5th Jan
It's two word titles tonight...
Tues 6th January
That makes it three for Tuesday...
Wednesday 7th Jan
Four for Wednesday...
Thursday Jan 8th
and five for tonight.
