Mon - First Single
Sorry - I don't remember the first single I bought even although I have very few...I tended to buy the album back then. The first record I bought (from 23rd Precint in Baths Street in Glasgow) was Relics by Pink Floyd. It has not aged well! I suggest: Arnold Layne or (the apt) Remember a Day.

Tuesday ...still checking my list!

Wednesday -Occupations
I'm a civil servant.. and I'm really struggling to think of appropriate songs. How about:
- the theme from Yes Minister
- I'll work for your love (Springsteen)
- Everybody wants to rule the world (Tears for Fears)
Blessed (Brett Anderson) - because the civil service provides a fabulously varied, interesting and rewarding career.

Can't remember which was bought first but the first singles I bought, all at the same time I seem to remember, were:

"Meet Me On The Corner" by Lindisfarne - think I've already had that played so...my others were:

"I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" - New Seekers.

and

I'd most like to hear:

"All I ever Need Is You" - Sonny and Cher (double A side with "I've Got You Babe" which gets more airplay but I always preferred the former)

Monday's must be designed to keep out the regulars, as it is the 3rd time this theme has been up (and unless we lie about our first records, it could be a bit repetitive).

My first single was Hawkwind: "Angels of Death". ;-)

It amazes me now but my first single that I can recall buying was the T Rex single Solid Gold Easy Action. Bought with Christmas money and in hindsight this seems a good choice for an 8 year old in Jan 1973!

I was later to be more affected by Bowie, The Jam, Springsteen, Clash and many many more great singles.

I really do yearn for the 7" single generation.

Here, Harry, you dont happen to keep a list of themes done, do you?

Norrie - I distinctly remember a girl in my class having a T.Rex T Shirt (she got it from her "big cousin") and my friends and I thought it was odd that... A. the band sounded like a lard substitute (think about it), and... B. She would wear a t shirt for a band that were so grown up. I'd heard "Deborah" and thought it was Ok but nothing special. Of course, very shortly afterwards T.Rex were having hit singles all over the place and Marc Bolan was on the front cover of just about every magazine.

The very first records I ever bought were a full set of Gilbert & Sullivan operas on 78 by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, recorded between the wars. A small snippet of The Gondoliers even made it onto a track we recorded in our band at school!

Still got the records but my turntable won't play them...

I have gramaphone but it's damaged and won't play - anyone know if there are any repair shops in Edinburgh. There used to be a shop in Stockbridge that I thought would do repairs but when I tried to google it I got the impression it had closed down. I'd love to get that back in working order, although I did manage to get a copy of Hoagy Carmichael's "Mr Music Master" (which was my most favourite 78 from my Mum's collection) on CD recently. I even have a 78 called "The Waltzing Strings" which was the theme music to Top of the Form and I love The Ink Spots singing "Java Jive". Sigh!

For Monday's 'first singles' (bought), I believe I may be quite the fortunate man of style and taste (almost).
I recall purchasing, from Tempo Tapes up at the Mearns Cross shoping centre, two singles on the same day. They were:

Lucky Number - Lene Lovich
Oliver's Army - Elvis Costello

When I think back, it could have been so much worse, so not a bad call then.

Now, if you're talking about first singles (gifted), then it'd have to be a children's song, like the Ugly Duckling or the Runaway Train or some such thing. I can't recall the exact one, as my younger sisters got one each as well, so there's a blur of that period in time - so very long ago.


As for list theme, well one track stands out as I put it on a fairly recent playlist I compiled for a CD to send to a friend. The track is

I'm sure if you hear it again you will recognise the reeling off of well known names.


RoxyJohn, I like that Janet Kay track. In fact, I put that on another compilation CD for the same friend. Funnily enough, he lives in Australia, and he never calls anymore. D'ya think that might be a reason?

JuliefromEdiburgh, I'm interested in finding out the name of that Hoagy Carmichael CD 'cos there's a track I heard once, by him, and I liked it a lot. I'd like to source it, if possible.

Dont you wish they would actually delete Cut The Crap it is truly awful. Considering that the Clash were one of the greatest band sof all time makes it even worse yet strangely This Is England is just magnificent. As is Live at Shea, if you don't have it yet cheer yourself up and buy it Strummer is on fantastic form.

Almost 36 years ago to the day I bought Mouldy Old Dough. It must have traumatised me coz it was a whole year before I bought my second single, All the Way From Memphis. In between time I bought my first album - 20 Fantastic Hits (by the original artists, may well have been the first to use original tracks and not cover versions ala the TOTPS albums, not sure). It was released by Arcade, but when I tried to look it up to remind myself of the tracks list, I could only find a Dutch release which was very different. I remember Maggie May, One Bad Apple, Beautiful Sunday and Love Grows but thats about it.

Norrie - Ha! I was referring to the lyrics 'I'm a bad motha' in the song. Good to know you're there for impromptu counseling sessions though. I'm hoping you subscribe to Lucy Van Pelt's idea of appropriate rates for psychiatric help - my nickel is in the mail!

Once B.A.D. started charting, theirs was a fresh and innovative sound with its sampling etc... J.S. did redeem himself in my humble opinion by his subsequent public reconciliation, accompanying song writing and production credits on No.10 Upping St. Shea is almost in the same category... isnt Terry Chimes on the skins? Nevertheless, Mrs Madmac was always the ardent supporter of the Clash in our house and had thought of placing a copy under the tree this year.

Well, as BB predicted I have two "first singles!" One is Bucks Fizz "Land of Make Believe" but the one I would prefer to hear after all these years would be "It's My Party" by Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin..great track. Hope this one is still living in my parents attic where I think I left it when I ran off to college all those years ago....

AFR...I am looking forward to occupations night too....could be revelations all over the shop....

My first single (for reasons that I can't really remember) was Dave Davies - Lincoln County.

I was (and still am) a great Kinks fan. But why my very first purchase was not something more obvious - like Days or Waterloo Sunset - I don't know. I have not heard Lincoln County for nearly 40 years - but could still sing every word! I seem to recall it had a good B-side too - There is no Life Without Your Love.

First album was Stand Up by Jethro Tull. Cost 19/11 (pre-decimal - that was a penny less than a pound). What an album. And what an album sleeve - a double cover, which when you opened it the members of the band 'stood up' in 3-D. You don't get that with a download!

Thanks for the sewage works suggestions or as they are now poshly called, Waste Water Treatment Works. The floaters one made me laugh.

What I am pleased about is that 60 posts after my original one (or 2 as I must have sent it twice by mistake) that no one has suggested "anything by Bryan Ferry + Roxy Music as they are all sh--"

Hey RJ - I would have thought Wasteland would fit the bill and as its only about a minute long you would probably have been allowed another song too!

Re If There Is Something, as a Bowie fan I truly hated Tin Machine but I thought the cover of this was actually ok, and on the live album pretty decent. Probably you hated it though!

That would be my first choice, but if you go with Chairmen of the Board then "Little more Time" or "Dangling on a String" would be fine.

I am still working on my Civil Engineers list!

RoxyJohn's suggestion of Friday on My Mind has prompted another suggestion from me which I think would be great and its the Cure or David Gray and Friday I'm in Love which of course lists all the week days. How jealous of RJ am I!!

Adam - all of your suggestions for Chairman etc are great, would love to hear any of those. Not sure if the track listing is the right one for your album memories but its the one we had, I am sure ther is a Vol 2 as well.

Another track which might be good for lists is Van Morrison and In the Days Before Rock n Roll which lists many of the artsists that influenced him. Though strangely he does not list Grumpy the Dwarf is not listed.

I think the first single I bought was "Goody Two Shoes" by Adam and the Ants. ( Although it might have been Uptown Girl by Billy Joel I think that particular tune has been played on the radio, PLENTY!)

I do distinctly remember- at 9 years old and in the days before singles where played to death for a month on the radion before even being released and hardy any singles went straight in at No.1- that I heard "You Win Again" by the Bee Gees on Top of the Pops on the Thursday, buying it with my pocket money on the Saturday and then hearing it reach the top spot on the Sunday. I remember going in to school on Monday claiming responsiblity for it hitting the top of the charts and then of course waiting till Thursday when my good taste would be confirmed by a special "This week's new number one!!" performance on Top of the Pops.

Curious story about Part Of The Queue - Oasis. I spoke to John Head of the wonderful Scouse band SHACK before a LOVE gig in Liverpool (which Arthur Lee never turned up tae incidently) who told me that Noel G had phoned him and brother Mick and asked if he could rip off a track fae the wonderful SHACK album Waterpistol. 'Go 'ed said they, you'll do it anyway mate'. It is almost a direct copy of 'Stranger' from Waterpistol. The thanks SHACK got was a two album deal and supporting Oasis on their UK tour of 2005. Funny old world.

"I Want My Baby Back" - Jimmy Cross (spoof, teen-tragedy song...a splatter platter).

"Hallowe'en Spooks" - Lambert Hendricks and Ross (the Ross being Annie Ross - Jimmy Logan's sister). One of those daft jazz novelty records. Great spooky noises but more silly than scary.

"We Only Come Out At Night" - Smashing Pumpkins

On of my most favourite ever songs "The Killing Moon" by Echo and The Bunnymen has a great sinister feel to it, as has "Playground Twist" by Siouxsie and the Banshees..

How about the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band's version of "Monster Mash" for a change.
