Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 10:50 UK time, Saturday, 6 September 2008

elements.jpgLet's try again with the week long theme of The Elements which was suggested by Raymie in Consett.
It was postponed from last week, so if you've already posted then don't worry as your suggestions are still valid.
Provided there are no major hurricanes, floods or fires dominating the news then the plan would be fire on Monday, air on Tuesday, water on Wednesday and earth to round off the week on Thursday.
Post a comment below and let me know your your fire, air, water and earth suggestions....

Re: 'In Every Dream ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ a Heartache'
RoxyJohn, I seek advice, and this is your
area of expertise. On the grounds that it
references something full of air, (full of
helium would be much more interesting,
methinks), I intended to suggest it for
    Tuesday's show.
    Q. Is the song too smutty for GIO? As B.B.
keeps reminding us, there will be children
listening. Perhaps the dark content will go
over their heads. (As if it were indeed filled
    with helium).
I bow to your superior Knowledge in this matter, and await your comments.

  • Comment number 13.

    Hi Get It On bloggers,

LAST MINUTE CHANGE TO THIS WEEK'S THEMES

With the events dominating the news at the moment, Bryan and I don't feel this week is the right time to run with our theme of the four elements.

We'll return to it again but tonight, instead, we're looking for SONGS WHICH INCLUDE QUESTIONS IN THE TITLE, (Bobby from Howwood's suggestion). Get your requests in asap!

Bryan will post the rest of the week's themes later today.

    Cheers

    Producer Mandi

  • Comment number 14.

    Fire -

I can't believe no-one has yet suggested "Fire" by the Crazy World of Arthur Brown? I thought it was the obvious first song for Monday night. Arthur played the Wickerman Festival for a couple of years, and an endless version of this song preceded the torching of the 35ft high wickerman at midnight. Surreal!

No more suggestions for Fire from me, as this has to be played.

  • Comment number 15.

This subject is driving me mad as Tommy keeps coming up with new suggestions to add to our list!
Here's an abridged version of the list:

Dancing With Myself - Generation X

I Hate Myself and I Want to Die - Nirvana

Mean To Me - Celia and the Mutations (basically The Stranglers with a female singer - it's great)

Start Me Up - Rolling Stones (for Socks)

I Wanna Be Me - Sex Pistols

I Can't Control Myself - The Ramones, this track was a cover of a 60's song we'd love to know who sang the original.

    Free Me - Cast

    Ali and the Winters
    Bonnybridge

  • Comment number 23.

    Tuesday - Air
'In Every Dream ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ A Heartache' - Roxy Music.

Requested with the official blessing of RoxyJohn. (See 19).

Great shows last week. Tuesday and Thursday were especially good. (In my humble opinion).

  • Comment number 24.

Ali - I don't know the Ramones' version of I Can't Control Myself, but I think you're probably talking about the Troggs, who did a great song by that name in the 60's. The Buzzcocks did it as well but in a more punky style.

  • Comment number 25.

I believe heavy showers are forecast for Auchtermuchty, Is there a fall-back?

  • Comment number 26.

Fire: I'm still going for Emily Smith's "Sunset Hymns". One of the clearest, loveliest voices I've heard in recent years.

Water: "Underwater Love" - Smoke City. "Sand and Water" - Beth Nielsen Chapman. TLC - "Waterfalls".

Hoochie Coochie Man - Muddy Waters

    Earth:

Emergency On Planet Earth - Jamiroquai

  • Comment number 28.

    Fire:

Please consider playing my fav band

TINDERSTICKS ( an acquired taste )

Ive never heard them on radio Scotland so it could be a first for the Brian Burnett show.

From the new album The Hungry Saw:

The Flicker of a Little Girl; or

    Come Feel the Sun;

or from an earlier album their most commercial success

    Tiny Tears

Other suggestions for your listeners who may not like Tindersticks ( which is hard to believe ):

Ring of Fire - Jonny Cash
Burning Down the House - Talking Heads
    Babylons Burning - The Ruts
    Firestarter - Prodegy
    Fire Woman - The Cult

Peter in Prestwick listening with son Jack 1 year old ( its never too early to get listen ) attently for Tindersticks !

  • Comment number 29.

Danielle - Castles in the Air (as Bryan is wont to say) would be great! That was one I'd thought of but forgot about when i came to put in my requests in. Don't hear enough of Don Mclean (except Vincent or American Pie) and he's done so many good songs.

  • Comment number 30.

Good shout Manicpeter! Tindersticks are one of the most underrated bands.
Go on BB, GET IT ON!
    Maria in Stirling

  • Comment number 31.

Guys - we need to make a pact right now NOT to request 'Wind Beneath My Wings' on Tuesday... please pretty please?

I'd suggest 'Radio # 1' or 'Cherry Blossom Girl' by Air.

  • Comment number 32.

Forest Fire - Lloyd Cole and Commotions

Fields of Fire - Big Country

    Norrie Maclean, Renfrew

  • Comment number 33.

    Bryan

My first pick for tonight is 'This Wheel's on Fire' by Julie Driscoll and Brian Auger.

    Or how about:
    Ashes - KT Tunstall
    Campfire Song - 10,000 Maniacs
Fire in the Hole - Steely Dan
    Fireworks - Kate Walsh
Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray - kd lang
The Tracks of my Tears - Smokey Robinson

    Cheers

    Andy

  • Comment number 34.

Good list, Andy. I'd definitely agree with the KD Lang suggestion. I've seen her live three times and it's even better live when she turns in her usual effortless, floaty performance. Maybe only Tina Dico has a voice to rival KD's...

  • Comment number 35.

Get The Fire Brigade-Move would be great to hear for Monday

    Something in the Air-Thunderclap Newman

    Black Water- Doobie Brothers.

    Higher Ground- Stevie Wonder.

The last suggestion is a MUST.

  • Comment number 36.

Thursday - Blanket on the Ground by Billie Jo Spears.
Mind you, its hard to believe that Billie Jo would ever have taken a good blanket of her bed to put down on some muddy river bank. But then again A Red Tartan Travelling Rug on the Ground, doesnt really scan does it.

    Fire:

    'f-I-re-uled the world...

  • Comment number 38.

A flame is out for a walk one day and meets a bunch of fireworks and says "I'd like a job please".

  • Comment number 39.

There's an incendiary live version of In the Midnight Hour with Wilson Pickett on stage at the 5/4 Ballroom in South Central Los Angeles in1965.KGFJ DJ Magnificent Montague exchanges raps with Wilson in the Introduction and and uses his famous catch phrase Burn Baby Burn before Al Jackson thumps the snare and we're off into the song. Two days later the Watts rioters chanting Burn baby Burn set LA on flames and Montague has to find a new Catch phrase.

You can hear the intro here

and you can find the performance on
A Man and a Half: Best of Wilson Pickett on Atlantic

  • Comment number 40.

    Wednesday Night

WATER you want to make those eyes at me for ?

    Sorry.

  • Comment number 41.

KT Tunstall "Other side of the world" (for water).

  • Comment number 42.

Julie - Funny, Playground Love was on my list too. I removed when I noticed it on your list. Great minds...
I agree, Don McLean is a wonderful singer-songwriter. It's the music I grew up on. Great to hear James Taylor today too.
Off to listen to a little Sir Duke. Enjoy the show tomorrow Bryan!

  • Comment number 43.

    AIR

Wild is the Wind - I like the Bowie version on Station to Station but Nina Simone also has a good cover.

For all the staff in the Community Mental Health Team at Parkhead who are all full of wind !

    Peter Harkins

  • Comment number 44.

Guys, I started making a list this afternoon and after about 15 mins I had about 30 or so really great tunes! Gonna have to cut it down and send in only the very very best - tough when you like them all though! Using Youtube as a screening service now...

  • Comment number 45.

Last night's Fire theme was one of the best so far, and there was so much left unplayed.
We seem to be veering towards wind and breathing tonight for the Air theme, so how about the following.

    Breathless by The Corrs
Windmills of your Mind - the Dusty Springfield version, and I know this is a bit if a stretch, but Life's A Gas by T-Rex.
Any excuse for a bit of Marc Bolan.

    Cheers,
    Martin in Dunfermline

  • Comment number 46.

Oh. I've got a choice here. Do I go for Joy Division's Atmosphere or Russ Abbot's?

    Hmm...it's a tough one.

Okay, it has to be Russ Abbot.

    Only joking!

For the Air Show can I suggest Atmosphere by Joy Division.

  • Comment number 47.

Just few maybe be worth playing tonight,

    REM - Try Not Breathe
    AIR - Cherry Blossom Girl
Puff Daddy - Every Breath You Take(some might know it as Ill Be Missing You)
Air Supply - All Out of Love
Simply Red - The Air That I Breathe

    Simon and Garfunkel Scarbourgh F'Air'
    H'Air'cut 100 - Fantastic Day

  • Comment number 48.

  • Comment number 51.

Norrie: re Steve Forbert...have you been to anything at The Caves before? I fancy seeing Steve Forbert again - he's a great live performer. Good he's playing in Edinburgh again.

  • Comment number 52.

MaxBGold is currently residing in Royal Windsor and suggests:

Creedence Clearwater Revival; Up Around The Bend

    for Wednesday's water related theme.

    Awight dahlin'

  • Comment number 53.

Julie: I've not been to the Caves before - been to most Edinburgh venues but not this one and really really looking forward to it!

Please let me know if you are going!

    Cheers

    Norrie

  • Comment number 54.

Thanks Norrie. Should think I will be there.

  • Comment number 55.

I will be wearing a white carnation.

  • Comment number 56.

    Hehehe good one glenmiller

  • Comment number 57.

    WATER:

Elvis Costello - Pouring Water On A Drowning Man
One of the best tracks from his covers album Kojak Variety. Don’t know the original, but it might be worth a search.

Little Nell - Do The Swim
The video for this is great, but her technique’s all wrong (kick from the hip, not the knee).

    EARTH:

Elvis Costello - Must You Throw Dirt In My Face
The best track from Kojak Variety. Yet again, I don’t know the original.

  • Comment number 58.

Hugh - that is a great call! The original is by James Carr and either version would be brilliant!

Glen - thanks for the tip! I thought of a home made I Love Get It On t-shirt?? That or my circa 85 Springsteen outfit!!

  • Comment number 59.

Welcome back Bryan, hope you enjoyed the concert.
For your water theme tonight, Stevie did a version of Beyond the Sea very early in his career which is still worth listening to.
Along with that, how about one of the following golden oldies?
Four Tops with Still Waters - an all-time classic!
James Taylor with Shower the People or

a bit of a stretch for a really great song,
John Denver with Calypso - a tribute to Jacques Cousteau and also the name of a sea nymph.

See this show is nothing if not educational.

    Martin in Dunfermline

  • Comment number 60.

Bryan, I hope you remembered to give Stevie a wave from us.

  • Comment number 61.

Many Rivers to Cross – Jimmy Cliff

This is The Sea – The Waterboys

Whole of the Moon – the Waterboys

River Deep, Mountain High – Ike and Tina

Famous Blue Raincoat – Jennifer Warnes and Leonard Cohen

I wish it would rain – Nanci Griffith

    Water – New Model army

    Water – The Who

I Am The Sea – The Who

Down By The River – Indigo Girls version

  • Comment number 62.

    WEDNESDAY
    "Swimming" by The Big Dish

  • Comment number 63.

    Simple Minds "Waterfront"
    David Sylvian "Waterfront" (different song)

  • Comment number 64.

RJ - you have missed out Bryan Ferrys outstanding version of Take Me to The River, I was sure you would nominate that!!

  • Comment number 65.

    Wednesday Water:

"Take Me to the River" - Al Greene or Talking Heads
"Down to the River" or "Glistening Glyndebourne" - John Martyn (rivalling RoxyJohn in obsessiveness this week...)
    "Waterfall" Jimi Hendrix
    "Riverboat Song" Ocean Colour Scene
"When the Levee Breaks" Led Zeppelin

Hope you enjoyed Stevie Wonder, Bryan - and hope it was sufficient for you for a couple of years after his dire version of "Blowing in the Wind" last night! Deary me.

  • Comment number 66.

    Bryan

Earlier in the week JimfraeErskine was waxing lyrical about kd lang (quite rightly!). And you were talking on Monday about tracks for every night from a single artist.

You could have played a kd lang track every night this week:
Monday (as suggested) - Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray
Tuesday (not suggested and not her best cover) - The Air That I Breathe
Tonight - the wonderful Wash Me Clean (or Love's Great Ocean)
Tomorrow - ShadowLAND (or What a Wonderful World - with Tony Bennett)

So even thogh you can't play one every night now, how about Wash Me Clean tonight?

    Andy

  • Comment number 67.

Andy - KD Lang's fantastic Love's Great Ocean would also be a good shout - it's certainly in my list!

  • Comment number 68.

    Hi BB, Team and bloggers

Water alredy, where does the time go?

    Saltwater by Julian Lennon
Drowning In The Sea of Love by Adventures
Sea of Love by Cat Power (great version of this track as featured on the Juno soundtrack)
    Waterfalls by TLC (ditto Julie!)
Take Me To The River by Al Green

    Cheers

    Maria in Stirling

  • Comment number 69.

Just a quick thought for "water"songs, as I eat my breakfast while staring at the deer enjoying the salad bar (my front garden) yet again...

Dire Straits.Waterline (the first DS I ever heard...and one of the best)

Robbie Robertson.Somewhere Down the Crazy River...if you've never heard this, check it out...it's got that southern swampy spooky feel that really holds up ( I think it came out sometime in the 90's).

  • Comment number 70.

I'm preferring everyone else's suggestions this week. Agree with saltspringsherri re Robbie Robertson - remember when that came out...it's a good one.

Here's what Bob Dylan played on the water theme on his show "Theme Time Radio Hour":

Mommy, give me a drink of water – Danny Kaye
Wade in the water – Ramsey Lewis
Cool Water – The sons of the pioneers
You don’t miss your water – William Bell
High water everywhere (Pt 1) – Charley Patton
Water water – Effie Smith and the Squires
You left the water running – Booker T and the MGs
Pouring water on a drowning man – James Carr
Cold dark waters – Porter Wagoner and The Wagonmasters
I’d rather drink muddy water – the Cats and The Fiddle
    Louisiana 1927 – Randy Newman
Cool Drink of water blues – Tommy Johnson
I asked for water, she brought me gasoline – Howlin’ Wolf
    Dirty Water – The Standells
Jesus gave me water – The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi
Gospel of John, Chapter 4 (6-7 and 13-14) – Johnny Cash
Have to change keys – Lonnie Johnson and Eddie Lang
    Backwater blues – Lonnie Johnson
Still blue water – Myra Taylor with the Jimmy Keith Orchestra
    Ice water – Glenn Barber
Grand Coulee Dam – Ramblin’ Jack Elliott

  • Comment number 71.

What about a bit of Scottish

Waterboys - Whole of the Moon
    Simple Minds - Waterfront
    Swimmer - Big Dish

fae Peter in Prestwick listening while bathing baby Jack Harkins who splashes every night to the show.

  • Comment number 72.

Don't know how all the question marks got into my previous post. The Blog is playing tricks again.

  • Comment number 73.

Seems to happen if you copy and paste. I have got into a habbit of jotting mine down on word and then pasting on the block - thats when you get the question marks.

    Might be that.....then again....

  • Comment number 74.

What you need nto do is copy and paste from a text editor like Notepad - Not Word. That should avoid character encoding issues like this.

    ASCII and ye shall receive...

    :-)

  • Comment number 75.

Would like to suggest two songs from 1981 for the Water Show.

Both in their own way are hiden jems which never got that much attention back in the day.

Julie Ocean by The Undertones. Only got to 41 in the charts. What a travesty.

Tales From The Riverbank by The Jam. The b-side of Absolute Beginners but should have been the a-side.

    Bring back the 7-inch single.

Nothing to do with tonight's theme but...until the photo disappears from the blog page, I'll be wondering if anyone's tried the carrot and cheddar soup yet.

It's OK...the photo has gone now - I can sleep tonight.

Julie - there is a very similar recipe for the soup on the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ web site - think they nicked it? ;-)

Re Sand and Water: Doing a spot of overtime tonight - what beautiful words - just about greetin' at my desk. Saw her at The Queen's Hall a while back, supported by Julie Fowlis (with a few words from Phil Cunningham thrown in for good measure). Great concert.

I do recommend the late John Wright's cover of Sand And Water - just as beautiful as the original. It's a really fantastic song.

The Flat Earth - Thomas Dolby

    Going Underground - The Jam

Stones in the Road - Mary Chapin Carpenter

Working on The Highway - Bruce springsteen (for all Civil and Structural Engineers!)

Cold, Cold Ground - Tom Waits

    Iris DEMent - Higher Ground

Trouble In The Fields - Nanci Griffith

    Johnnys Garden - Manassas

    Lava - B52's

Down in the Ground - Handsome Family

    Underground - Tom Waits

This Island Earth - Bryan Ferry

Peter Gabriel - Digging In The Dirt

Spirit of The Land - Hothouse Flowers

San Andreas Fault - Natalie Merchant

Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground - Willie Nelson (still way and by far the best version of this Willie Nelson classic IMHO)

I am sure not all of these strictly in keeping with the theme.

    Bryan

The show is always good - but last night's was a cracker! But be careful what you play - it's hard driving with a tear in your eye (Sand and Water).

For tonight, I'd support Norrie's Willie Nelson shout.

Or how about something from that great Scottish album - Dick Gaughan's Handful of Earth. Song for Ireland or Now Westlin' Winds would be great.

Or maybe Do You Want to Know a Secret by FairGROUND Attraction?

    Thanks

Max B Gold is thinking that if it's earth your after then Woody Guthrie - This Land is Your Land is a contender.

Max B Gold listened to last nights show on the interweb and is of the opinion it was a belter.

  • Comment number 89.

    Hawkwind - "Earth Calling"
    Neil Young - "Mother Earth"
The Groundhogs - "Earth Shanty" (this would be a debut for them, I think?)
Crass - "Mother Earth" (also a debut!)
The theme from "Earthworm Jim", quite possibly the best cartoon ever (and almost certainly the most entertaining computer game I could ever be bothered sitting down in front of for more than 10 minutes)

  • Comment number 90.

Don't Give Up On Us - David Soil

  • Comment number 91.

How about the Theme From Shaft - can you dig it?

    A last couple...

You Angel You - manfred manns earth Band (on the Bronze label for those that remeber that discussion from a few weeks back)!

MBG makes an excellent suggestion but Mr Springsteens version of This Land would be equally good and reminded me that This Hard Land would be a fine selection.

    Cheers

    Norrie

    To Jim Frae Erskine,
Thanks for the info on I Can't Control Myself. Didn't know The Buzzcocks covered it, must try and find a copy or I could always hound Bryan until he plays it. Ramones version is on an album called Acid Eaters and is all covers.

Patti Smith Group - "Land of a Thousand Dances". Go on, set me up for the weekend, Bryan!!

Re last night's show--no offence to RoxyJohn, but B.Ferry's cover of Hard Rain was just plain scary.
For tonight's "earth"show, Etta James "Standing on Shaky Ground" comes immediately to mind...

I had blogged yesterday that Bryan Ferry vesrion of Take Me to the River is exceptional, honestly sometimes his covers dont quite work but when they do.....check out The Bride Stripped Bare album for a superb mix of Ferry tunes and choice originals. I am sure RoxyJohn will confirm this is one of his best albums.
