Mull ramblings!

I hope everything in Islandblogging land had the Christmas and New Year they wanted. Yes, we did have our first Christmas on Mull and it was lovely. We walked along the beach on Christmas morning which was something we had always wanted to do and it was worth it - none of the usual stresses of "are the sprouts on" "is the turkey in the oven yet" and a million other trivial stresses - it just didnt matter - we had lunch when it was ready, opened pressies when we wanted - though Hannah was concerned Santa wouldnt know our new address - thankfully the "We have moved" card made it to Lapland in time!!!
We went south the day after Boxing Day to do the visits - it was my first time "going back" since we had moved in May - and to be honest I didnt really want to go but got into the swing of it! We stopped in Glasgow on the way down and took advantage of the sales - my first time in Glasgow - very impressive! We stopped overnight in Carlisle to break up the journey and headed on to the Midlands early next morning to arrive in time for lunch! One of the scariest experiences was driving and the first time I hit a roundabout - I really panicked and didnt know which way to look or go - it felt really strange - the thing that really overwhelmed me was the huge amount of people - it has been so long since I've seen that many people (and me a London girl so should be used to crowds) - I found myself people watching and tutting at their behaviour - driving is so different - people are rushing and are so selfish (not everyone of course it just seemed like everyone!) We came back after New Year - we stayed overnight in Oban as we had to collect Pepper from the cattery and couldnt tie up with a ferry - she survived pretty well but was certainly pleased to see us. I dont usually stop at motorway services unless its for a loo break but have to recommend one if you've not experienced it - its on the M6 at Tebay in the Lake District - excellent food, nice location - its not one of the chain services like Little chef - the sign on the motorway says Tebay Westmoreland Services and Farm shop - definately a good stop if you need to. Sorry no pictures this time - the only ones are the family Christmas ones which I dont think are quite the same as the views on Mull. Life has returned to "normal" - who determines what normal is? surely its an individual thing but we have our own definitions of normal - anyway back into the routine of life on an Island which is unbeatable.

Mull in Bloom!

Suddenly the Island is sprouting - there are snowdrops out everywhere and the daffs are about 6 inches through - the sign that Spring is on its way - the snowdrops are like little lights to give us something to hang on to during the dark days - and to tell us to "hold on" Spring is near!

On Sunday evening, we had a fantastic sunset - the pictures are from the front and back of the house.

The sun just catching the top of the mountain - the white specs are all that we have left of snow!

The moon over the mainland as the sun went down - the sky and tops of the mountains were a beautiful pink!

Austria? The Italian Lakes??

The Alps?

The Pyrenees (?spelling?)

The Dolomites?

The Cairngorms?

No - it was Mull and across the Sound to the Mainland to the Morvern Hills - not much snow on the low ground but enough to dust the tops of the mountains - lots of hail storms today which gave the impression of snow at low ground - like millions of frozen white ball bearings - very strange. My crocuses photographed on Monday are now gone - just as well I took the snap when I did - I guess they made a tasty meal for someone! As I write this, the wind is gusting and is quite scary - feels like the house could fly away - visions of Dorothy in "Over the Rainbow" when the house disappears in a tornado or is it a cyclone (of course the Judy Garland version). Hope it is calmer where you are!
