Misery - It's a place on the mainland. Don't Go There!

So many people have been asking how I'm getting on in Fife. It's kind of you all to care but I'm afraid you're going to be sorry you asked. Here's a muckle moan! (I won't bother with photos; I don't want to offend you with just how ugly this place is)

I made the colossal mistake of renting the house without seeing it. My boyfriend was in the area and I asked him to have a look. He told me it was fine and there was next to nothing else in Fife so like a fool I took it (he was only trying to help). So I'm privately renting an ex-local authority house on a massive estate. The walls are wafer thin so I can hear the neighbour’s bathroom habits and the drunks in the street all hours. Who has a drunken fight at 4.30am on a Tuesday morning? I was too confused that someone was shouting drunkenly first thing in the morning to be scared! Unlike most nights where the noise of people outside and shouting from either side scares me ridged. The walls are so thin I can't tell if it's someones walking about in my kitchen or the next house. For the first few days every time I heard someone doing the toilet (and I can hear people pooing!) I had to go and look. So far I haven't caught anyone having a whizz in my loo but I'm still not conviced I live next door to a horse, 'cause that's what it sounds like! I'm walking around constantly with the poker in my hand and there's not a fire in the house! It's never quiet; I can always hear someone’s telly or screaming at each other. I thought someone was being murdered a couple of evenings ago.

However despite having absolutely no sound proofing and massive picture windows so I have a lovely view of the flats and more to the point, they can see right in, The place is like an OVEN! No amount of fiddling with the heating controls work and I can't switch it off! Apart from early evening and 3am when it's freezing, it's unbearably hot the rest of the time. Which makes battling with the washing machine all he more infuriating. First it was leaking, now it won't drain and I can't pull it out to try to fix it! I just haven't got the muscles and the boyfriend isn't home for another two months if he hasn't binned me by then for being such a torn faced besom.

The only community activity seems to be hanging over the balcony of the flats next to the house with a fag, screaming abuse at the kids who perpetually batter a football off the garage doors. I presume these kids belong to the people in the flats but it's hard to make out the message hidden in the expletives. There are no posters anywhere for plays or fetes or gala days or anything! It is the summer holidays?

I tried smiling and saying hello to the neighbours. They stared at me then started sniggering to each other, nice. The fridge in the corner shop is full of special brew and the service is frosty to say the least.

I keep the revolting plastic blinds down so I don't have to see where I am.

I tried to sit out in the sun this morning but the woman next door sits on a bench looking into my garden and started asking really nosey questions so I went in. I say my garden, there's no fence and her bit is higher than mine and happily walkes down the steps and walks through my bit so maybe it's shared. That's the garden out of bounds then.

Then there's the job that I walked out of last Tuesday. I only started on Monday! The big boss was running the weeklong training course. The Sales Manager, not this guy, had interviewed me, so his language came as a shock. He couldn't manage a whole sentence without using the F word and just as we were starting to get used to that he threw a couple of C words in! He started a lot of diatribes with, "I'm not being sexist / racist / anti-puff but..." This was supposed to be a Business-to-Business sales course!

We were in the training room from 9.30am to 6pm every day without any breaks; we got a sandwich and a can of coke at lunchtime while we watched a presentation. At 6pm on Tuesday night he came in and threw our contracts of employment in front of us. Told us he'd signed them and to give them a quick read through, sign them and hand them back. First thing I noticed was the holidays, which we were told and had been advertised, as 25 days, were actually 20 days INCLUDING statutory holidays! So we'd only have 12 days to choose outside Christmas and bank holidays etc! The girl I was training with then pointed out they had our place of work as the office, it's supposed to be from home as it's a field sales position. This would mean having to pay for and be taxed on every 120 miles or so of every days journeys! The notice period was 1 month from me but 1 week from the company, no sick leave above statutory ever and other arbitrary nonsense. The car was supposed to be a Toyota Avensis, I got given.... go on guess.... yes, a Skoda! There was no pension scheme apart from a stakeholder thing and no health care despite the job being advertised as, " Excellent benefits package." Ha! What benefits? The best bit was when he came back and after an hour of arguing agreed to change the holidays although even then he's only go to 25, 5 of which we had to take for Christmas Day etc! I was still far from happy but was thinking, look it's an income until I can find something else, just put up for now, it might turn out ok. I didn't want to admit to myself that I'd left my lovely shop and island to live in a dump and work in a company with a sweatshop mentality.

So he asks us if there's anything else about the contract we have a problem with... We said no, as long as the changes we agreed are put in writing. He shuffles a bit then says, "So you're clear about working a month in arrears? I smell another rat... So I clarify by saying, " Yes, we started work on the 2nd of July so we get paid at the end of July." ..... "Nope, you get paid at the end of August..." Hence another argument. He thought he could just sit on a month of my wages, indefinitely and keep the interest! Eventually he said he's get us paid at the end of the month. He also said we were the only people to complain. Either that's nonsense or he's employed a complete bunch of Muppets!

I gave the girl who was training with me a lift back to her hotel. She seemed to think we'd won some great victory! I felt like I'd been totally ripped off! I knew I couldn't work for a company who behaves like that and couldn't send customers for training with a man who's going to F & C at them! On top of this a conversation came back to me from the interview. The Sales Manager had asked me how close I was to the agency that had organised the interview. When I asked what he meant he'd muttered that he wasn't very happy with them. I said he should take it up with them. He replied he might tell them he was making me a lower offer but the offer made to me that day would stand at which point I said I wasn't lying to the agency! He instantly said no, no, just a misunderstanding we'll just leave the offer as it is.

So I asked the girl I was training with and she said that she'd had the same thing and she's agreed to tell the agency she was getting £5K less and so had everyone else!

The next morning I rang the agency on the way into work and explained my concerns. I picked my up colleague up at the usual time and went to work on time. We got left hanging around as usual then just as I was about to go and leave my car key at reception the bosses wife came in. The girl I was training with was sent off to look at something and the bosses wife said her husband had asked her to speak to me about my attitude the day before. I said yes, I'd been waiting to speak to her husband. I wasn't happy and had made the decision to leave and handed her the car key back. She then asked, " What the F is your problem?" Charming! I started to explain that I felt the package offered by the agency and at the interview was misleading. She jumped up and yelled in my face, " Are you calling my husband a F'ing liar you B!" I was horrified! I said I didn't see any point in this conversation, I was leaving. She sneered, " If you're no intelligent enough to understand the F'ing contract you're no F'ing intelligent enough to work here, get the F outa the building!" Bizarre! She continued her filth as she marched ahead of me down the stairs and past the office where everyone was staring. Just as well she couldn't see that I'd started to laugh in amazement! As she slammed the door open she started to make threats in my face. I pushed her hand out of the way, walked past her and jumped in my friends’ car that was waiting outside. She turned and gaped, oh, dear god who was that? What a fishwife ( I would like to point out that this was my friends words, I know many fishermens wives and none of them would conduct thenselves so pitifully)! And to think they can't work out why their efforts to take their business upmarket are failing? They're dragging a good concept right into the gutter with them.

So I've spent the week sitting in that house, scared out of my wits at every noise, applying for every job in the paper. I've got an interview tomorrow lunchtime. Wish me luck? If I get a job I can enjoy and get my teeth into things might look brighter?

I've hardly been out because I'm scared, there's no privacy in the back garden and when I do nip out to the supermarket (no village shops with local fresh produce here) I have to drive back with it getting drearier and pass the boarded up shops, even the ones that are open have metal grills over the windows. Grey, rundown buildings, grimmer and grimmer as I get closer to "home", I'm close to tears by the time I put the key in the lock.

People write books and make films and programmes about being deserted on islands. I had wonderful friends, a great social life and a business I loved in a thriving community on a beautiful friendly welcoming island where people pass the time of day in the street. It's Kildonan Fun Week and the Viking Longship is back in the water on Arran!

I've never, ever felt as alone, deserted and trapped as I do tonight on the mainland.

Oh Sunny, oh Sunny. what can I say. you have got a bum deal all right and have met some ghastly folk. get out of there - fast. you are a sensible intelligent girl, and have obviously got a lot going for you. You need a better place to live, and a better job. Have you read about Maslow's heirarchy - he's a psychologist? his theory is that life is like a pyramid - we need a firm base for our lives to progress - ie food, warmth and shelter at the bottom of our pyramid, then security of a physical sense, then we progress to emotional needs, then intellectual needs, and eventually happiness nearer the top once our needs have been met at the bottom layers. What I am saying is that you need to sort out these basic needs - home and job - before getting any satisfaction or contentment. GOOD LUCK

scallowawife from shetland

Oh, Sunny, what a tale of woe. Your first priority has to be to change your living conditions, which sound ghastly. If your immediate environment is a threat, that's the worst way of living. Can you not get out of your rental contract? Even a small flat or even bedsit in a nicer area would be better than where you are. And the people at your interview sound just appalling. I wouldn't give them the time of day. Get out of that house, Sunny, and things will look brighter. Good luck.

Jill from EK

Sunny, how disgraceful that you are having to leave your island and live that way. Why not move to another island. I have friends who now live on a wee island called Coll and they love it. The community is superb and they have never been happier or more content in their lives. I am sure you would receive a warm welcome from everyone there. you would be surrounded by beautiful blue sea and eventually find work. I am sure you would be happier on an island than in your concrete jungle. I too have studied Maslow during my student days and you must, must find a home and security, food, water, shelter, campanionship, before you eventually find your happiness again. Good luck and please get yourself back to an island where people care.

RJ from Oban

NZ sounds like a good place, Sunny. Or take time off: a year in China being paid to teach English to the locals might open up all kinds of opportunities. And now the whole of Europe (almost) is your oyster: the Scandinavian or Baltic countries might be more appealing to you than the Mediterranean. If you have to take a jump, why not a BIG jump? Don't spend unnecessary time grieving (it's easy for me to say so, of course, not being in your shoes): heave ballast overboard (or get some friends to store them) and move on. Good luck. I note you still have your feisty spirits about you.

mjc from NM,USA

another island? - just look on IBHQ blog and there's the answer - Fetlar is pleading for people to go there! (and by the sound of it Muness View is too...)

scallowawife from shetland

Sunny, I have been thinking of you all night and I have to say I am with your friends here, you need to get away! It's one thing to be somewhere new and start over and experience some difficulties but this sounds detrimental to both your physical and mental health. You must find a way to maybe get back to friendlier parts of Scotland. Possibly some of your blog-friends there can help? Don't spend too much time there! Will be anxiously watching how things are for you and sending good thoughts.

macQ from NMtoo, USA

sunny, i am with RJ from oban, and all other supportive bloggers, get back to island life. its a big bad world out there and i think you need to be somewhere less hostile. coll is a great place and offers a huge welcome to all. get your backside o'er here lassie !! and put that nasty experience behind you !!

dippy-diver from friendly Coll

Do you have to stay on the mainland? What about another island group? It sounds like you've landed in the dark underbelly of the Kingdom. If this cat had a magic wand.....

Flying Cat from worriedaboutSunny

Aw Sunny...you poor thing! Do anything - but just don't stay there. Where you live has such a huge impact on everything... There must be something back in civillisation. I have been reading your blog since I first visited Arran 3 years ago; it's given me an escape from the grey of Teesside.I really hope you find somewhere and somethings better! Look after yourself. xx

Coire from Tesside

Sunny, I'm not an islander, but your story has touched my heart! I feel so desperately sorry for you. I think the others are right, you love island life and if it's not possible to live on Arran then you should move to one of the other small islands in the area. At least then you would only be a short ferry ride away from home. Good luck and God bless

BobbyB from Clydebank

Fingers crossed you've hit the bottom. Remember, this isn't a practice run, you will never get to live yesterday again.

Nic from Coll

Wow!!!!!

Flying Cat from an admiring glance to Nic

The horror of the worst of the mainland. How could the boyfriend think you would be OK there. Does he know you???? Can you open your shop again, buy a caravan, camper van and put it on someones land/garden. Surely some friends on Arran would let you do that. You dont have to live in a house, a caravan can seem like an extended holiday. Its OK to go back. Working for other people is generally awful as you have found out, you will be a wage slave and its hell. See if you can wangle your way back. You may lose the deposit on the house in the war torn area but then most landlords dont return it anyway. Dont be proud. Just do it. We have but one stab at this life (unless you believe in reincarnation), so strive to do what you think is right and what you are doing just now is not right. God bless you - you wee soul.

UpSouth1 from Oh God almighty

Sunny, that tale is grim, but, as I am very familiar with the area, not surprising. Where exactly are you? Parts of Fife are awful - I lived and worked there for some time. Mind you, I lived in a nice wee village called Strathmiglo, but I worked in Dunfermline. Some of these places are the pits. The buckfast consumption must be record breaking, judging by what I used to see. Sounds like you need to get to live somewhere safe ASAP. Make that a priority. All else is secondary. There is nothing worse than living next to the sort of ASBO toting human flotsam you clearly have round about you. And all because you had to leave your native isle. There are times when I feel that tourism is little more than a case of geographical whoremongering - dress my country in a tartan skirt and stand her under the red light of the tourist industry...

Mountainman (James) from Tobermory

well aid mountainman!

sorry, that should have read"well said mountainman!"

Sunny, It was good to hear from you again, but otherwise I'm deeply saddened. Wish North Ayrshire council would take a leaf out of the book of North Yorkshire Dales National Park and allocate 50% of houses to local residents. Your description of the Fife town is one of sheer hell. I hope you'll be able to return to Arran one day, but I have to admit that chances at the moment seem to be at best slim.

Arnish Lighthouse from Stornoway

its a modern day crime your circumstances sunny and yet another is life in the suburbs at least now you for one can appreciate how valuable a place like arran is in today's " need it yesterday at any cost " world were a word like beauty is measured in receipts and respect is a shallow catchphrase good luck sunny

monkey from kilmarnock

Hi guys! Thanks for the support! I've thought through the caravan option. Getting permission to put hem anywhere is difficult. They're full of midges in the summer and freezing and damp in the winter and are at risk of being washed away in the spring and autumn flash floods (I'm amazed no one was killed last time). I know this as quite a few of my friends have been through caravan hell. My attitude was, "It's not worth it, that was before I moved here." It's not just losing the deposit, it cost well over £1000 to get moved and now I'm totally skint and owe the boyfriend a fortune. The trouble with living on any island is what do you do for a living to keep body and soul together? I've got another job. I start on the 30th. It's with a national company so should be better. The contract here is only for six months. We're hoping if we work hard and save we might have enough for a deposit on our own house. If we don't buy now we'll never be able to and it worries me. How will we pay the rent when we're 70 and too old to work. My lad will be retiring well before me. We need to get a permanent roof over our head while we can. Although definitely not here! We did put an offer in on a house in Strathmiglo funnily enough but it fell through. With my boyfriends type of work they insisted on a much igger deposit at the last minute. We know now and have to save more. Before anyone says it, we can't afford Arran, no where near. I can earn a lot more on the mainland and the house prices are much lower. I don't want to stay in Scotland if we can't stay on Arran but my lad has ties here for a wee while yet. So short of winning the lottery,I think I've gotta grin and bare it. But please keep the ideas coming, there must be a way, there must! As for does he know how bad it is? YES!!! But I don't think he gets it. To begin with he would ask what I'm doing that evening? As if I know anyone or there's anywhere to go! Now he doesn't ask what I'm doing or who I've spoken to or how I'm settling in because I'm not. I was going to go back to Arran and sleep on mates sofas until I have to come back to start work but I got whiplash on Saturday so can't drive and have a constant headache. Moan, moan moan. Oh dear heaven I'm irritating myself now.

Sunny from Exiled

So relieved to hear from you! You are a strong girl, doing the best you can, I understand that. Keep yourself safe and I'll be wishing all the best to you and your fella. It may be good for you to get away from Scotland but trust me, you will miss in later. Let us know how things progress.

macQ from NMtoo, USA

Alas poor Sunny, can I just say I've moved here from Mull now live in K*. Managed to get digs in an old Church and feel I've been lucky on my choice of area. It ain't all bad. Yes I admit some areas are like the Gaza Strip, however there are (lots) of areas that are actually very good. So don't give in keep yer head up and who knows maybe we could start an exiled Islanders club. Once you get a decent job the monies coming in then you can look elsewhere. I needed a good 6 months but it's worked out ok. So chin up and don't forget to live up to yer name.

A Scottish Soldier from Fae Fife

Very sorry indeed to hear of your troubles Sunny and hope things improve for you soon.

Annie B from the usual

how are getting on sunny?

carol from in the sun

I was "emergency rehoused" on an estate where I definitely did not want to be, with rowing and rowdy neighbours with my three children and know some of what you are going through. After gritting my teeth and being totally determined, ( and many tears!) the neighbours were not any less rowdy but are less frightening and threatening than I thought they were. I think the answer is just to keep to your standards, don't be tempted to lower them. The tone of your blog sounds different this time - you sound more on top and I know you will get where you want to be, however long it takes. Good luck

janette from west yorks

Sunny did you know that digital sands local grocery store in berneray is up for sale??? maybe you could take it over!! give us all your latest news!!xxxxxx

carol from in the shade cause its b****y hot

The local grocery store on Berneray is probably for sale either because *no-one makes a real living from small stores in out-of-the-way places and they are often hobbyshops for people on occupational pensions, or the owners want to retire and nobody in the family wants to run it (because*)

Flying Cat from r.i.p. ruralstores inc.

I'm sure Berneray is lovely but it's not any island, it's my island I want to live on, it's in my blood! As for the local grocery store, North Ayrshire Council (the council who've forced land prices up by refusing planning permission on most of the island) ave allowed ASDA to build a massive superstore right at Ardrossan Ferry Terminal. What do you think that will do to Arrans small local grocers shops? Lochranza and Kilmory have already lost their local shops due to having more holiday homes than resident population. Some people move to the island and settle in well. Others arrive and instantly try to "fix it" while doing their shopping on the mainland

Sunny from Arran

just read some of your comments. so sorry.weve only lived here 4 years.would you want to come back to arran if you had accom? nothing fancy, just a basic caravan, up a long track.weve lived in it for 4years whilst building our own home and should be in for xmas.

Awfully nice offer t wiliams from Arran. All the best to you # Best regards to Sunny as well.

I am indeed sorry to read of a young Scots plight in Obtaining even basic living accommodation on the Island she adores... BUT as is happening everywhere money is king I've just been sickened in reading a post from Luing The VERY reason Sunny CANT reside in her beloved island.........................OUTSIDERS. this stinks of 21st century Clearences. And the saddest part is there is NOT an elected skeezer to fix the problem.

frodo the scot from utica michigan

Jack McConnel had his chance and look at what's taken his place! That's the end of the Labour party for me, a life long socialist has no place with them. Do you think the Scottish National Party is the future of Scotland? With no alternative.... And a party who says they're for the people of Scotland...

Sunny from Exile

Outsiders eh? Bring home all the exiled Scots at once. That should make everything grind to a halt quicktime. Who's an outsider? Define one.

Flying Cat from a hard stare

The insider/outsider dichotomy is too simplistic. I personally think that incomers may well bring quite a lot to the islands, perhaps even more than your average native. The housing problem seems to be exacerbated by part time residents and the tourist industry as well as housing policy. Talk of 21st. century clearances is non sense Frodo, and you know it for the ideological diatribe that it is. Prices of real estate are apparently expected to go up the next four years. I don't see how British folks afford it, and usually with adjustable rate mortgages too.

mjc from NM,USA

Hey Sunny I am trying to write a book about Arran and I would like to semd you a copy. Pls contact me Steve@kingsengland.com Thanks.

Steve Rudd from Huddersfield

MJC What do you call it when the indiinous population are cleared off their ancestral land by the exceptional wealthy from another country? As I said my family were cleared off their land on Machrie Moor in the 1820's to make way for sheep and were forced to scratch a living on the beach. Many of them emigrated but a few managed to build homes and scrape a living. We can't do that this time. Every member of my generation of the family has moved to the mainland as we can't get a roof over our heads on the island because exceptionally wealthy people are paying massive prices for houses that they leave empty most of the year. 90% of these exceptionally wealthy people are from England. I have nothing against anyone of any nationality moving to Arran to live and contribute to the community, Arran is a tolerant diverse and great place to live thanks to the facinating mix of people who live there. What I object to is the exceptionally wealthy turning Arran into their playground and pushing the indiginous population out. Clearances.

Sunny from Arran

Correct.

Flying Cat from fangs&clawsbared

The problem on Arran is one shared by most Scottish islands, not enough social housing and the land to build it on. Arran sufferes more than most because it is so accessable from the mainland. With the ScotGov calling for a new council housing programme (35,000) and the removal of the right to buy linked to the fact that the Forestry Commission could free up land on Arran for building, maybe an affordable house on Arran for indiginous islanders is not too far off. Although I imagine that competition for such new housing on Arran would be fierce. Get your name down now, Sunny.

Paul O'Brien from Glasgow

Can't get my name down as I no longer live in North Ayrshire Paul! It's too late for me but if the politicians get their fingers out it could save an awful lot for broken hearts. HIFAR (Housing Initiative For Arran Residents) are attempting to bring the forestry commission on board to get land to build on which may be freed up by the Arrans crofting communities. There are huge areas of the island scarred by felled trees that have been left to rot as they are worth less that it would cost to clear them. The trouble is that anyone who buys the land will have to pay for the old felled trees to be removed. If this has been addressed when the treees were felled houses could have been built out of the felled wood... Then again that would have been sensible sustainable developement and we can't be having any of that :D

Sunny - Get out of there. If the boyfriend dosn't understand or won't accept your wishes - find another - or simply don't bother. Peter from Portincaple

Peter from Portincaple

It's not really his fault now. If we move to another rented house we'll be tied in for a minumum of six months. We're hoping to buy soon so better to rough it out here a few more months and keep our cash for our new home. We're saving furiously for a deposit. Just wish we knew where the housing market is going. It might be as well to hold off for a few months anyway. Anyone know something about this?

Sunny from Arran Exile

Sorry to hear of your woes last year Sunny. Hope 08 brings you more cheer. I was born and brought up on Arran and am lucky enough to still have oodles of family in the North End. I've been away for over 20 years and still love going home but I would never have been able to afford to stay there after I left school. It would be lovely to move back but I would have to have good employment which is next to impossible to find. I don't regret moving away as I have seen so much of the world and have met some amazing people. I had some tough times when I first moved down south (no money, sharing flat with 5 other people, etc, etc) but I doubt I would appreciate Arran as much as I do if I hadn't done all this. When I was a teenager I couldn't wait to go travelling and it certainly lived up to my expectations. Now that I'm into middle age I am beginning to dream of my retirement home on Arran... So don't despair if economics drive you away. There is a fantastic world out there to explore and Arran will always be there.

The Mill Expat from London

I Left when I went off to Uni and did the down south stint too. When I finall managed to get back I really thought it was for good but just can't earn the £80K you need to live on the island from my wee art store so off to explore the world again, wandering but never home. Thanks though, your right, gotta look at it as a big adventure. Spain here we come!

Sunny from Hola!

Interesting blog . It certainly sounds like Fife is a dump . But I doubt going to NZ is any better . Living in Canada is just like Fife . A horrible dump . At least in fife you can up and move and be somewhere totally different in an hour or so . In Canada it is almost impossible to move as no matter where you go it is depressing and populated with the world's rudest people . Stay in Scotland and enjoy it . It is a great place .

Rob Smith from Toronto

All the Canadians I've met have been pleasant, sociable and interesting, including both 'natives' and annually returning exiles. All of Fife is not a 'dump', the fringes of the Beggar's Mantle are lovely, as are other parts. Sunny was not remotely tarring the whole of Fife with the same brush. Please don't even consider moving to Orkney Rob Smith. Miserableism like yours nowhere in the world needs!

Flying Cat from just popping by...

The problem is not outsiders, it's absentee outsiders, who own properties and don't live in them but use them as a moneymaking project in the summer, which means they're lying empty half the year. What a waste, and how galling for people who DO want to live on Arran full time, but can't afford it. I don't think people should be allowed to buy cottages as business propositions unless they live there all the time and do B and B. A friend of mine lives in a very pretty village in Norfolk and it's the same there. The place is dead in the week, but goes mad at the weekend. Unfortunately the weekenders bring their provisions with them and don't buy anything at the local shop. So nobody benefits, except the absentee landlords, who usually live in Chelsea or Kensington. Hope things go well for you in Spain, Sunny
