Ok the dark is beginning to bore me. Thought my alarm clock had gone mad this morning as I woke up in pitch dark but no鈥. it just is dark. So here鈥檚 a list of good things about the perpetual dark to look forward to:
All the fairy lights look pretty 鈥榗ause it鈥檚 dark!
The Brodick Christmas lights get switched on Sat 3rd at 4pm there鈥檚 a raffle to decide who gets the honour and there will be mulled wine etc.
1st Minister Jack McConnell opening Kilmory Village Hall Sat. 10th & switching on lights.
Lamlash lights and Christmas parade Sun 11th at 3pm with usual stuff
Can鈥檛 see the state of the garden & can鈥檛 do anything about it because it鈥檚 too dark!
Can鈥檛 wash the car cause it鈥檚 too dark to see what I鈥檓 doing!
Don鈥檛 feel guilty for burning half a tree every night because it鈥檚 freezing because it鈥檚 dark!
Ghost stories work better in the dark!
Might manage to get a photo of the barn owl that lives next to my house because it鈥檚 dark all day!
Always remembering to take a torch with me when leaving the house because no matter what time I leave it鈥檚 dark!
Walking into a warm cosy house and scoffing half a galleon of hot chocolate because I鈥檝e just battled against a force 10 gale walking home in the dark!
Can鈥檛 see how much rubbish you鈥檝e put yourself into debt buying for Christmas because it鈥檚 Dark!
Coming out of the pub after lunch doesn鈥檛 feel so weird because it鈥檚 dark!
Sitting in the nice warm bar of the ferry because there鈥檚 no point going up on deck cause it鈥檚 dark!
It鈥檚 too dark to see the hole in the hull of the Cal Mac Ferry when it crashes into the Pier in high winds! The Ferry crashed at Ardrossan last Friday; it was the only ferry to sail in the whole fleet that day. The Cal Mac spokesman said, 鈥淭his occurrence is nothing out of the ordinary. Ferries make contact with the piers on a regular basis.鈥 EH? They did get welders in to fix it and the ferry did sail about 10.30pm to get everyone home so good on Cal Mac but would rather they stopped crashing鈥
What else is good about the daydark?
I went to the mainland last Tuesday for Christmas Shopping. Glasgow was packed. People kept bumping into me, everyone looked miserable, the shop assistants were useless and there were huge queues at every checkout which I couldn't be bothered standing in. Then I realised I was standing outside the new enormous multiplex cinema in the City Centre! A cinema that's NOT in the back of a lorry! Not only that but with a choice, yes a choice of movies! AND starting every 10 minutes!!!! So I watched the new Harry Potter, glutted on Popcorn then met Julie for a glass of wine before catching the ferry home and nothing on my credit card! Have decided to do all my shopping on queue free friendly Arran where the shop assistants really do help because they know who I'm buying for.
Mind you I still don't know what to get my Dad, he's impossible, especially as he's pre-empted me this year by saying he doesn't want a jumper, socks or alcahol! Well that's blown it!!! Any ideas at all please, please, please?
This is turning into a general ramble... I've got loads of work to do today so I'm mucking about on here to avoid doing any of it. I've read every blog including the Western Isles pages (which are very good)! I started this morning by reading the Arran Banter from cover to cover which takes some doing when the only piece of news was an article on how someone took the wrong jacket home after a funeral last week and how whom ever has his jacket will know because it won't fit them and there's a mobile in the pocket and could everyone who has a black jacket please go & try it on. This article managed to fill two columns... It's nearly 5pm and I've done absolutely nothing all day! I've so far managed to avoid doing anything at all that might actually be of any use! Excellent! I would take Backofbeyonds' advice and look up where the people who leave comments are from but I might learn something and that would constitiute doing something useful so no... I'm blaming it on the dark!

The ferry crashed!!?? :-o
Daily from Bute
Yeah! Does happen frm time to time, the waverly crashed into Brodick pier a few years ago and caused quite a bit of damage. Last Fridays incedent left a hole the size of a tennis ball according to the witness in the Banner report.

I'm glad i wasn't on board!
The Waverley also crashed at Campbeltown not long ago i think and the Coruisk(that's currently on this route) hit rocks too a few years ago...
Has the Banner got a website?

Been to Arran a few times, as part of a boat race - ran through Brodick but never really 'stopped by'. What type of shops are there for buying gifts? Any known ones? I must go back sometime soon as a tourist...tsk
Stuart from Glasgow
Does your Dad live on Arran? Why don't you get him a torch. The ones on Ebay double up as laser pointers, corkscrews, DVD players and probably sat nav consoles.
The Clansman hit Tiree pier last week, didn't delay it much though. I'm not sure how big a bump constitutes a collision, rather than normal docking procedures.
At least in this day-darkness we get some light reflected off the sea. The poor devils living on the north side of the mountains in the highlands really are in the dark.

Lots of good shops, not supposed to mention profit making establishments by name here as it would be advertising but there's a very good Art Shop in Lamlash, A chcolate factory, a mustard & jam factory, an aromatics factory, cheese factory, out door clothing & extreme sports equipment store to give you just a few ideas

Hats off to you - top quality slacking, and top entertainment for us! Is Jeremy Godwin still a regular contributer to the Arran Banner? My partner used to live on Arran, and oh how we enjoyed those editions blessed by his wisdom and wit. Luckily, he's magnanimous enough to spare some time for the Stornoway Gazette too.

I want to see that Barn Owl!
john from glasgow
Yes he does! I especially love the way he covers a number of different subjects from articles that have been in the Banner over a number of different editions. I had a theory that he gets lots of local papers and lives vicariously by sharing allowing us to share his greater intellect. Thanks for confirming this theory. Someone actually wrote to the banner saying unpleasant things about Jeremy & he wrote & answered every point.

We still get Jeremy Godwin on the odd occasion writing to the Banner
Robbie from Arran
That must have been a good edition! I must admit we always turned to the letters page first; if there was no Jeremy, we were gutted. My partner and a mate of his sent in a spoof Godwinesque letter each once which was quite entertaining, although I'm not sure the man himself appreciated them.

Is that Robbie at the tourist office?

Thanks for hooking up with the Western Isles site. We are going to try and have a good laugh with this caper and it would be lovely to get some momentum from the other islands. Would you be the sites rep in Arran and contribute some rubbish to augment ours? Surely this is what the web is all about? PS Who is or was Jeremy Godwin?
