Good plug, luinguist. Well written. Hope you get someone who will do Luing justice. Luing seems to be beautiful island. Surely there is someone there with capital and the proper spirit who will fit right in?
mjc from IN, USA
I used to live on Luing 20-odd years ago and have many happy memories of my time on the island. It was always my intention/dream to return some day and I still keep an eye out for property coming up for sale so am aware that Ben More, Cullipool is on the market. If my current situation was different I would jump at the chance of buying Ben More and taking over the shop in Cullipool. Sadly, unless I win the lottery, moving back to Luing will have to remain a dream for me. However, fingers crossed, someone will take over the shop - which is a focal point of the community. Luing is a very special place and your own love of the isle shines through in the words of your post. I cannot better your description of the advantages for a family thinking of moving to Luing (although I couldn't help notice you made no mention of summer vs winter ferry timetables!!! ). Hoping you find new owners soon to carry on the shop . Best regards, Duncan
Duncan from Brum
So where do we get to find out about the shop and house up for sale?
Helen from Isle of Lewis
The 成人快手 probably wont let me name the agent for Benmore, Luing, so just type in the name. For the shop go to the post office website and have a search, the potcode is pa34 4ua details wil be there somewhere.
luinguist from luing
I hope you find someone who will fill the post office and shop--I am sure it plays a large role in your community and it wouldn't be the same without it. Best of luck and keep us posted.

if you go to www.isleofluing.co.uk and click on shop and post office you will get the phone number for the shop. The shop is called Luing Stores.
mab from somewhere
Good luck in your quest Luingiust. There must be someone out there who would jump at a chance like this. Maybe you could post a couple of photos of the island to help entice them further.

pondhead from Mull
A fantastic community, just like the old days, How could anybody like that sort of thing. Posted on luinguist # I have no idea. Beats me, luinguist, beats me.# By the way, how about some pictures of the store/post office, house, one lane road to nowhere (would it be alright, by the way to drive the car forward one way, and merely reverse to go back home?).
mjc from IN, USA
Thank you for your concern regarding this local business, but we believe applications have been made for the Post Office; and also for the shop--by residents of Luing. We hope this relieves your concerns for the continuation of this facility that is so vital to our community, and like you, we send our best wishes to Derek and Christine.

Good luck with this. Wish I could get Daddy to take it up
Ben from Glasgow
In response to 'confused' there have been no serious offers made for the shop and post office business on the Island and in view of that it will be advertised nationally. Failing that the shop and post office will close.
DEREK from luing
As a frequent visitor to Luing I wonder what a "serious offer" for the shop would be?! Lets hope that a buyer comes forward soon with an offer that is suitable. It would be a real shame for the island to lose this service.
island visitor from Glasgow
If the shop & post office is closed you no longer have a business to sell as the shop is only a lock up so why close un till you have a buyer ?

A from here Dohhhh --- sorry am I missing something here. (explain)
derek from luing
do you know how much they would like for the shop as i would seriously consider it
paul lyons from clydebank
Well Mr Lyons, your guess is as good as anyone elses, no-one seems to know...not even the estate agents! Shame really, this situation could have been sorted months ago otherwise.
confused... from Isle of Luing
Sorry, but the estate agent has obtained A value for the business and should have contacted all the interested parties. You must insist on talking to Alexander Henry,of that estate agency, Failing getting any satisfaction from him contact me, although I will not discuss money matters. We have had a number of dreamers and that's fine. Also some just being downright nosey. Just to make things quite clear, for CONFUSED, it was the third party that was not playing ball, consequently they wasted 7 months of our time.
derek from luing
The shop building is only rented - you close the shop, as you have said you will do, - the business ceases to trade therefore you have no business to sell. You keep the shop open until you have a buyer - you still then have a business to sell. Seems simple to me

Whatever is happening I hope it turns out well.....
Jim from Tiree
A FROM SURPRISED We have run this business for 20 yrs and never had a full holiday, We are now past retirement age and we want to have less ties maybe visit our family, yes we do have a family. There comes times in life where you just have to step out of the rut and if this means closing the shop then so be it. When we have needed to take time off for personal, health or family reasons did SURPRISED offer to step in and help keep things going, if they did, then I apologise , but we stayed open 360 days of the year for 20 yrs. Now if SURPRISED would care to discuss this then maybe she or he would care to step from behind her anonymity then I wouldn't have to surmise as to there identity. Or perhaps 'A' is not a customer at all. As you can appreciate we have become adapt over the years at spotting hypocrisy and being told how important the shop and post office is to the community and frequently by people who don鈥檛 support their community shop or anything else on the Island. So SURPRISED, please, if you wish to offer logistical advice for our business please get in touch. SURPRISED (I鈥檓 not).
derek from the shop
Does not sound like a happy situation. And yet, if OG's pictures are anything to go by, such a lovely place. I am sure it will be sorted out.
mjc from IN, USA
I lived on the island as a child, and still visit now as my parents are buried on the island,I hope Christine and Derek find buyers,as I would miss that wee shop so much.
Maureen McKechnie McFarlane from Greenock
Well mjc, it really is a very beautiful place, and I am very sure the problem will get fixed over time; but with the global economy in such turmoil, we wish "Derek from the shop" all the best (we aint going that high).
confused... from Isle of Luing
Why the angry comments to suprised who just seems to be passing a reasonable comment, if you want to sell the "good will" there has to be some
puzzled from somewhere else
In my opinion the tone of the comment left by suprised is extremely patronising and deserving of a defensive response. I don't know Derek but it seems to me that someone who has managed to keep such a business running in a community that is so small for twenty years has a certain level of business sense and as such the afore mentioned comment is indeed insulting!
nic from not suprised
So what has happened, has the shop been sold? is it still open ? Luing seems very quiet nobody blogging have they all died of starvation ?. Where are you all ?
Curious from wanting to know
island blogging is not working anymore
derek from luing

Just stumbled on this site. Am interested in what has happened to the store since my great grandparents had the first shop or maybe - formal shop on the island. D & D McPhail of Carrick Villa i.e. the villa - very Victorian - on rock. All of this is still there as I popped over in 2007 with 2 friends from South Africa to have a 'look see'. We went to the graveyard where we tried to remove moss from the family grave.! My mother was born on the island and I actually started school at 'North Luing Public School' for that read the Cullipool end of the island!- just because we stayed up into the start of the school term before returning to Glasgow. Remember Joyce and Christine MacKay and Lachie MacLachlan! How my father delighted singing at the ceilidhs in Cullipool, Tobronochy and Easedale during the 'Fair Fortnight'. Please someone give me some news. Am planning to visit from SA in 2010. Thanks Ishbel
