McCartney on blistering form. there are some very good jazz covers of this, but the otiginal still sounds as fresh as the day it was released.

This 12 bar pot boiler is surely their dullest song.

is it really 20 years since one of the great political speeches of modern times was made.
a speech that made it into my top 3 of all times. ( the other two ....'there'll be no whitewash in the whitehouse'.....and an obscure harold wilson effort from a party conference.)
and it was a speech that wasn't even made by, at that time, a politician.
but by a wife who was so in love but definitely not the smootchy kind either.
a wife who was so in love with her husband that she didn't have time to stay home and bake cookies.
and as today is the new hampshire primary then this speech (song) is a stark reminder that the candidates will have some way to go to up their game.

re patti smith........has announced that she is no longer going to do her traditional 2 end of year gigs at the bowery ballroom.....being in ny at that time i had pondered attending the gig but was persuaded otherwise......instead went to see the staged 'war-horse'.........what a stunning performance.....and all the more surprising as the show opens and closes with the magnificent anthem......'only remembered'.......there's a bbc thread in there!! ( big picnic and the ship)

I like the drumming on Love Me Do. However, as I was saying in my moderated post (#19) it doesn't matter whether Can't Buy Me Love is 12 bars - it's still great. The B side is admittedly better still but GIO never play it but like Can't Buy Me Love it's also on theme:

You Can't Do That - The Beatles what a single that was!

McCartney on blistering form on the A side: Lennon on imperious form on the B side.

Should have been a double A side, really.

In the early days of stereo broadcasts there were test transmissions where they played one channel from TV and one from radio and I remember hearing Love Me Do. Unfortunately EMI erased the master tapes so the latest re-issue version is mono only.

Not quite: I recounted an hilarious converstaion with the kids about tonight's theme, but I was probably a little clumsy in the way it fell down the page.

Needless to say they tought it was inspired by The Kranies. I had to explain there was a difference between ' Swingin' Lovers' and swinging lovers.
