We're jamming...
A couple of folk got in touch tonight complaining of a rough day so tomorrow's theme should suit them. I'll be asking what are the songs that stop you raging in a traffic jam?
I don't want to end up with two hours of chill out tunes so I'd also like to hear about the rock tunes that help you get rid of that pent up aggression when you are behind the wheel.

Relaxing, like Mary-Doll's bubblebath.
Smooth, like Tennessee whiskey.
Mellow, like Kinky's Cuban cigars.

This is a Bonnie Raitt song.
I commend it to the House!

Music is a vital component in retaining sanity. I'm lucky though, because I'm often moving between meetings in my car and do much of my listening there.
Therefore the line " Here in my car, I feel safest of all" resonates with me, I just don't care for Garry Numan's androgenous techno delivery.
Discovering The Leisure Society cover has been a deep joy, guaranteed to raise a relaxed smile, an opportunity to move into auto pilot and rise above the chaos that unfolds before me, both on the road and increasingly, everywhere else. This isn't chill out, Bryan, it's just plain fabulous.
Cars - The Leisure Society
Otherwise, the ipod is plugged into the car stereo, some 10k plus tracks on shuffle - I've no idea what's next and am frequently surprised that I don't know what I've got or forgotten about. For example, this completely wonderful track came on today while i was driving to a knitwear factory in Ayrshire.
Second Song - TV On The Radio
This really would work well on GIO, not chill out. Bowie fans like our Norrie would like this band (if you are not already familiar) - in fact, I think Bowie appeared on some of their stuff.
I could produce a list that would run forever, but the truth is your mood in the car is exactly like it is anywhere else - it changes constantly and the music reflects that: happy, sad, fast slow..so this is a kind of non theme ( there's been a few of these recently) and the mainstream sensibility of GIO prevents things you really do listen to getting houseroom. So here's a few others.
Atumn Leaves - Nat King Cole
Benedictus - Karl Jenkins ( start at 2:38 to catch the magnicient choral ending)
Shut Up And Let Me Go - The Ting Tings
Keep On Truckin - Eddie Kendricks
and for those days when it has all been mental, you just want escape, recharge the batteries and forget it all for a while:The helpless resignation in this song is how we all feel occasionally, tremendously powerfull in its simplicity.
I'm Done - Nitin Sawhney

So we frequently found ourselves driving round and round as the time of the match ticked past and my son got more frantic and less likely to be able to play any sort of game because he was so distraught.
