Life's what you make it...

Bryan Burnett | 20:01 UK time, Monday, 8 August 2011

It was great to be back on air tonight and always nice to have a busy one to kick the week off. But what happens tomorrow? Things Can Only Get Better? Surely not It's All Over Now? I am thinking we might get a few inward looking suggestions for tomorrow as I am asking you to dig deep and pick a song that sums up your outlook on life. Will it be the Python's incredibly annoying riff on positivity or will one of Morrissey's gloomiest tunes sum you up? Tune in tomorrow for your fellow blogger's musical manifestos.

Senga - you can't go when we've just got to meet you. You're better offline than on, to paraphrase a sweetly worded bit of purple prose summat I and others read.....
Talk Talk Life's What You Make It
Have yet to take that sort of sensible philosophy onboard myself, but it's not a bad starting place.

...or another call for 'Hang On Little Tomato' - Pink Martini

Great wee song...terling advice and it can work!

"Somebody told me, I don't know who
Whenever you are sad and blue
And you're feelin' all alone and left behind
Just take a look inside and you will find

You gotta hold on, hold on through the night
Hang on, things will be all right
    Even when it's dark
And not a bit of sparkling
    Sing-song sunshine from above
    Spreading rays of sunny love

Just hang on, hang on to the vine
Stay on, soon you'll be divine
If you start to cry, look up to the sky
    Something's coming up ahead
To turn your tears to dew instead

And so I hold on to his advice
When change is hard and not so nice
You listen to your heart the whole night through
Your sunny someday will come one day soon to you"

    NEWSFLASHES!

No doubt this will be of interest to everyone.

    But...

We have a potential gem today, 16:30 and Friday, August 12th. at 23:00 on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio4. Great Lives is focusing on Kirsty MacColl.

Rich in North Carolina will certainly be up for a listen to this, but I don't think the 'Listen Again' facility is available outside the U.K.

Perhaps someone can contact him via the Dark Side.

    Thanks y'all!

#30 Cheers Paul, hopefully Bryan will be inspired to play it ☺

  • Comment number 33.

#31 Done. I took the credit as well.

  • Comment number 34.

Sometimes, when things are tremendously familiar, through constant repetition, the message becomes diluted to the point of meaninglessness.

But from the moment I heard it on "Our World" in 1967, " All You Need Is Love" by The Beatles made a huge impression on me.

At the time I thought it an interesting and happy number. It was then far ahead of its time in recording technique (made on a 4 track).I never considered the lyrics, thinking they were just pop song lyrics.

But as I grew older, the words started to mean something, and it's now a personal anthem reflecting my outlook on life.

John was much more of an ideas man, and clever wordsmith than a musician, which is why he captured the imagination of his generation, though the tunes were good too.

As a statement of positive reinforcement, and as a statement of values it is quite complete, challenging and fundamentally true.

I believe it to be the greatest philosophical statement ever made, but moreover, it compresses every great philosophical idea and religious tradition into about three minutes. I'm particularly attracted to the line "there's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be" whilst offering you idea that if it's not where you want to be, you can change it, in time.

    Genius.

So that's my take on life - the over -arching track from which everything else flows - but everyone's 'heard' it, and even if they are no longer listening, it's worth considering for tonight - but if that's too obvious - here are some others.

Sticking with Lennon- McCartney, there are a couple of solo records that really kinda sum me up:

    Intuition - John Lennon

I very much trust my instincts: much more than the facts, this song reflects that. As the great economist, J K Galbraith fittingly said, (given our present turmoil) 'memory is more effective than law'. Lennon used to criticise McCartney's "granny s***" ( Honey Pie etc, which I love) and this is John's, but great fun, should be better known.

One Of These Days - Paul McCartney from McCartney 2

Distractions - Paul McCartney from Flowers In The Dirt

I have only one real ambition: to have nothing on my mind. Modern life makes this difficult to do, and a meditative state is difficult to attain. Both these songs are quite beautiful - one a simple acoustic guitar track the other an amazingly unheard and brilliant jazz ballad, both sum up how I feel most days. It would be a real treat to hear one of these.

Others that sum up my life, mostly through the chaos of business are:

    The Bug - Mary-Chapin Carpenter

    Walk Tall - Dreadzone

Both songs that reflect our inability to control events, as our political masters will be reflecting upon as I write. My days are bonkers, today I'm dealing with the after effects of rioting on our client's premises.

    lastly

    Everybody Oughta Make A Change

about how I and everyone of us resist change, Eric much longer than some - but he got there in the end.Great track.

    regardez youse

    henri

PS I was strongly tempted to ask for McCartney's "Waterfalls" as representative of how I feel about my kids, but the " don't go chasing polar bears" line is probably banned on grounds of bad taste at the moment (along with 'I Predict A Riot").

    Forever Young - Bob Dylan

hows that for a turnabout - Paul asks for Frankie and I ask for Bob.

#31 last words of a song - can't think of a single song I can remember the last words of. We seem to be veering away altogether from being able to choose songs because they sound good. I'm away to find the lost jotters.

NO! Don't put me on the naughty step again! No!

Ok I've googled it. If that's your choice Paolo, well I'm sure it will be very popular tomorrow night, though not necessarily with the bloggers, who are the backwaters, no that's wrong, the backbone of the show.

And Scotch Git may of course remember that he hates you.

  • Comment number 39.

#35 yes Gaie, keep it different, i'd like that to be my new blog philosophy!

  • Comment number 40.

Oh ... and I forgot the corollary of my other choices:

I would have said "Hold on Tight (to Your Dreams)", but that was played last night. So I'll go for Monty Python's "Always look on the bright side of life"

Although if you want to play "Hold on Tight" again, I won't complain.

"If you can fill the journey of a minute
with sixty seconds of wonder and delight
then the earth is yours and everything thats in it
but more than that I know you'll be allright.
If you can dream and not make dreams your master
If you can think and not make intellect your game
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
and treat those two imposters just the same"
Kipling's words have always inspired me so I was intrigued when Joni Mitchell put them to music and beautifully too.Come the end of this year redundancy looms for me at the age of 61 and these words will help me face the big adventure that lies ahead,Cheers,Willie Bartke

The"journey of a minute"watching the Jeremy Kyle show will not fill me with wonder and delight!Giz a job!:o)Willie B.

  • Comment number 44.

Willie, I was made redundant a year ago (exactly a year to the day of the GIO get-together!) and am now doing something completely different - was very lucky indeed to get a job, and while it's at the bottom of the pile, it's a job I enjoy, I feel it's useful and it's challenging to me. And I can walk there and back.
So all to look forward to - forget Jeremy Kyle!

  • Comment number 45.

For all those secret dancers out there and for the Burns Family please play the Burns Sisters "Dance on this Earth" - I was once caught by a senior colleague coming into a room having a wee twirl round the room when he came back into the room unexpectedly. He burst out laughing and birled me round the room! You know who you are! You can always find joy in the world and some of us want to leave our stamp on the earth!

  • Comment number 46.

Thanks for your words of encouragement, Gaie and good on you.I will miss the social interaction more than anything so may do some voluntary work to keep my oar in.May lead to something. The very thought of Jeremy Kyle makes my brain freeze!Cheers,Willie B.
