Trust me!Great as James Carr's version is ,Aretha does what she did to "Son of a Preacherman"(from the same amazing album "1970's "This Girl's in Love with You),grabs it by the throat and drags it up the church steps transforming it into a declaration of pure sanctified soul.With amazing guitar by Duane Allman this is Aretha at her absolute finest.Cheers Willie Bartke

I'll second that willie. it is indeed a great version. Not as good as James Carr of course but one of the better covers. As the greatest secret cheatin song of all time it would make a nice change to hear the Aretha one on the show. The other really good version is the one by Percy Sledge.

It's incredible how many folk have covered this song and even more incredible why many of them even bothered. What were they hoping to do. Improve on it?

Amongst the worst versions are Gram Parsons (too bland), Bruce Springsteen (trying to make it a rock ballad), Dorothy Moore (wtf a disco version) Flying burrito brothers (a country Version) Ken Booth (reggae version) Richard and Linda thomson (never meant to be a duet) Alex Chilton (ruined by backing bands jangly guitars).

Other poor covers from elvis Costello, Linda ronstadt, Barbara dickson, The eels et al.

There is a good instrumental by Ry Cooder. Best White versions are Peter Green and Eva Cassidy who at least invoke a bit of emotion.

Speaking of badly kept secrets, I hear Our Glorious Presenter has joined the ranks of the Twitterati.

I agree with the view that it is a mystery why anyone would want to cover it - what else can be given to it that James Carr didn't already give to it.

By the way, in case the impression is formed that James Carr was a one hit wonder the Goldwax singles CD is awesome.
