Winter's been a bit of a drag. I would like to suggest a song that is - let's just say, stunning. Not cheery, but beautifully crafted and melodic AND sadly, very underplayed. Possibly because it's not a "feel good" song. You can keep your "Let's Get The Party Started!!" funfests - sometimes maudlin fits the bill better. Not a snowball's chance, etc. But - I humbly offer this on the basis that we are looking forward and next weekend we are in Spring, which will hopefully bring better weather and spirits. (I do believe in tall that SAD stuff, even if it's been debunked)

But, can I just ask - am I the only person who finds Nanci Griffith's voice incredibly irritating? I can't listen to her without getting sidetracked into analysing why she annoys me - even when the music and lyrics are lovely.

Anyhow - scrub the Yazoo - it's far too niche. I think I've asked for all of these songs in one way (or another) and only one has been played. And that was (or another).

Yep, funnily enough, for the last two months I've been listening to Scarlett O'Hara a lot - it was a big Hit in the Hannah household when I was a nipper.An obituary I read this morning said Jet's first wife had an affair with Cliff which drove the poor bugger to drink.At first, I thought 'well, it's just the one infidelity for goodness sake' but then, it's not as she went off with some big hunk who locked her up in a trunk - it's Cliff. That would drive me to drink too and I expect that, quite quickly,it drove her to drink as well.

#39 agreed Mary Doll, Nanci Griffith drives me round the twist too - there's a certain kind of twee perfection in her voice - something quite precious, wholesome and nice - that I find quite hard to take.I had a similar problem Nana Moussaka and Julie Felix too, when they used to be on The Frost Report. Benny Hill used to impersonate them and if he was around now and given a work permit by the thought police, I feel certain he be impersonating Nanci Griffith.

Norrie, you obviously feel strongly about Nanci, so I must presume I am simply wrong on this occasion and will go back to the drawing board.

I had a couple of her cd's many years ago but I've 'one clicked' 'From A Distance - the Best of Nanci Griffith' and will give it another go.

I think that's quite fair - I recall that you bought and then struggled with 'Plastic Beach' after I said I thought it the album of the year, so it'll balance the books.I wasn't suggesting Nanci's voice wasn't beautiful in itself, or that she's not a great songwriter - I just think the voice, the vocal delivery and the material aren't always joined up, somehow. Although they are not dissimilar in content, I much prefer Mary-Chapin Carpenter's voice. 'From A Distance' is the song I like least, but is not her own composition so maybe I'll be able to revise my view. I can still imagine Benny Hill doing 'From A Distance' - maybe Rod Stewart should have done it..

I hadn't realised GIO was actually biased against Lyle Lovett based upon his looks... Oh well,I can drop my occasional requests for Edgar Broughton's 'Apache Dropout'then.Edgar and his brother wouldn't have made it in a boy band.

Norrie, I never seriously thought it was your good self.Did this blackguard also notch up your first moderated comment earlier on the same post - maybe had he been drinking and it was an in vino veritas moment - like what happens at family funerals.I never drink at family funerals.I wasn't remotely offended.If I'm going onto a public cyber space with opinions then derison is a given.

Still, it was decent of you to point it out - I won't feel obliged to reappraise Nanci's canon of work.

Maybe the moderator could follow up the idea - instead of removing the comment they could just overtype "ABSOLUTE CONDECENDING PISH". At least it would remove doubt about why they are moderating and we wouldn't have to speculate about how offensive the comment was.
