Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 17:44 UK time, Sunday, 28 March 2010

vortex.jpgDoctor Who fans should not miss Tuesday's show when we will be taking the show to Inverness as the Doctor Who bus comes to town. The new series will be premiered before a group of specially invited schoolchildren who will then get the chance to put their questions to the new Doctor and his Scottish assistant.
Along with our usual contributions from GIO regulars they will also be picking their songs for Tuesday night's theme, which of course had to be science fiction!

Monday
It's the big ask where we feature songs about begging, pleading, asking etc. Suggestions could include Please Stay, Last Request or Don't go! Let's have your demands...

Tuesday
Sci-Fi is the theme to celebrate the launch of the new series of Doctor Who. Doctorin' The Tardis is a must for tonight. I also know how fond our bloggers are of The Rah Band's Clouds Across the Moon so tonight could be the night boys...

Wednesday
Towns, Villages and cities anywhere on earth is the theme tonight. Will the Get It On tour bus be following The Road To Aberdeen or will we be spending Midnight in Moscow? You decide...

Thursday
As Archie Fisher presents his last ever Traveling Folk, tonight's show features the folky side of pop. We could have Richard Thompson doing Britney, contemporary folk bands like Mumford and Sons or perhaps the folk acts who made it into the charts. Some of you might even want to suggest a flute based, folk rock outfit from the 70s. Unlikely I know,
but I thought I would make the offer, after all this is the groundbreaking music programme that played Zappa and Zep in the same show!!!

    Monday

Please Please Me - The Beatles

probably the most obvious choice for a Beatles track tonight, but not the best ... much better is

Please Mr Postman - The Beatles

it's not often a cover version is a huge improvement on the original - and there are several versions of The Marvelettes original - but I think The Beatles version is the best, a stunning vocal performance form John Lennon on what I think is their finest album, With The Beatles. It shows how far ahead the Beatles were, doing Motown covers in 1963! This is the track I'd really like to hear.It reminds me of driving on holiday in the South of France -myself and my kids all used to sing this when we driving about.

Ain't too proud to beg - the Temptations

talking of Motown, here's another classic

Please Be With Me - Eric Clapton

Tell Mr Why - Neil Young

    Please - Jack Bruce

well, now that we've got Greggary's Zappa thang sorted out, I can get back on my original hobby horse....

    Monday:

Ain't Too Proud To Beg - Temptations, classic!

Don't Say Goodbye - Buddy and Judy Miller featuring Patti Griffin

  • Comment number 9.

Oops sorry Henri, I shall substitute:

Robbie Wiliams - Please Don't Die

    another great Robbie track.

  • Comment number 10.

    MONDAY
    an understated little number:
Stay With Me - Lorriane Ellison

  • Comment number 11.

    #7

A simple typo or an unconscious nod to Mr. Soul?

  • Comment number 12.

    #9

no problemo, norrie, well, we're agreed it's a classic - let's keep it as your request.

I'd really like to hear Please Mr Postman (Beatles version) played.

It's another of my campaigns to get fabulous Beatles tracks played, which, somewhat surprisingly, I don't think get enough exposure.

I know that must sound like a ridiculous statement, considering it's the Beatles I'm talking about, but it would be nice to hear the less obvious, and just as fabulous, Please Mr Postman.

  • Comment number 13.

Please Read The Letter - Alsion Krauss and Robert Plant would be another great song for Monday.

    as would

Please Remember Me - the wonderful Rodney Crowell, I think Tim McGraw had a big hit with this, Rodneys original with Kim Richey on backing vocals.

  • Comment number 14.

Henri - With The Beatles on the stero as I type (mono version)

  • Comment number 15.

    #11

    simple typo, I'm afraid.

#14 - superb, and much better in mono.

  • Comment number 16.

How hard is it to read that last thread on a mobile phone!

#8 Norrie the soul msn. gaun yersel!

  • Comment number 17.

    try again
#8 Norrie the soul man. Gaun yersel!

  • Comment number 18.

    Monday
One of the great missed opportunities in the history of pop.

Won't Somebody Dance With Me / Lynsey de Paul

Towards the end of the song a gentleman asks her
''May I have the pleasure of this dance?''

and she disnae dae the 'ye askin. I'm askin, I'm dancin routine'

    Soooooo.......

if the track is paused at the appropriate bit (3.04) then perhaps Babs and Bryan could do the necessaries and right a 37 year old wrong.

  • Comment number 19.

    Tuesday

I wonder how this will work out - coming from Inverness, does that mean only the blindingly obvious gets played cause that's easier on the day, or is this a good day for the blog, cause 'inter -active' cannot be as accessible to the track listings?.

Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space - Spiritualized

From NME's 'album of the year, 1997' - really interesting and spacey, includes an integrated version of 'I Can't Help Falling In Love' with a nice choral ending.

    Space Shanty - Leftfield

if this doesn't get you up and putting your dance moves to the test, Bryan, nothing will

    Space Walk - Lemon Jelly

I really love this, particularly the mock Astronaut-Houston dialogue at the start.A big family favourite

I'm The Urban Spaceman - The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band

Produced by Paul Mccartney, the Bonzos only No 1 (I think)?

and, here's another much ignored, under played Scottish artist....

'Cosmic Wheels' or 'I Like You' or 'The Intergalactic Laxative' from the Album 'Cosmic Wheels' by Donovan

to be fair, The Intergalactic Laxative, amusing as it is, won't pass the moderator, though 'I Like You' is a rather beautiful and underplayed track.

I find it hard to choose between them, but Spiritualized, on balance, is really interesting.

    MONDAY;

Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want - The Smiths

    Almost forgot:

Empire Ants - Gorillaz - from the Album 'Plastic Beach'

well, there's a reference to 'the sun' and 'falling through space' in the lyric, so it qualifies. Who'd have thought a virtual hip hop band would make a prog rock album?

Well, interesting you should raise that point. I realised after I'd posted I'd made reference to lots of space numbers which is not the direct equivilent of sci fi.

However, I seem to be much the same as everyone else, who find it difficult to hold these two seemingly complimentary but quite seperate ideas in our minds other than as one and the same.

Perhaps Mrs Osmond from Bearsden can clarify for the benefit of our tortured minds... but if it's strictly sci fi

Although it was a disappointment that our Bryan didn't manage to play anything by this superb artist who passed away the week befor last, her stock has risen considerably since.

Amazon have one new copy of Lesely's 'Sing Children Sing' for sale: £225.46 and one used for £196.47.

Remarkable - I cannot remeber ever seeing a cd at this kind of pricing - but, anyone else noticed how the price of out of print cd's is rising.I had to pay nearly £30:00 for 'All You Need Is' by Love & Money.

Actually, the band who seem to me to be way out ahead in terms of airplay on GIO are, perhaps, unsurprisingly, The Beatles.

I just wish they'd play the less than blindingly obvious, though.

What on earth possessed them to play that duff, vapid, middle of the road, James Last - esque, utterly soulless version of the soul classic, 'Please Mr Postman'?

Silent Running - Joan Baez (from the landmark sci - fi movie of the same name)
Rejoice in the Sun - Joan Baez (beautiful closing theme from the same)

    Tuesday
Oxygen 4 - Jean Michel Jarre

JMJ's music sounds like it could be Dr Who theme music. All very sci-fi, anyway.
Equinox 4 - Jean Michel Jarre is also good.
