Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 17:39 UK time, Thursday, 9 April 2009

As it's the Easter weekend I thought I'd get next week's themes list up nice and early. I hope there's something here for everyone. I imagaine that Thursday's top 20 countdown will provide the week's challenge. For instance how many great songs have been written about the number 13? We might need to get a bit creative!

SEG8522.jpgMonday:
It's themeless tonight so if there's a song you haven't heard in ages then get in touch and Get It On. I also want to use this show as a excuse to catch up on some of the tracks I haven't got round to playing on recent shows. If there's anything you can think of then give us a shout on Monday night...

Tuesday:
Its spring and the flowers are out so tonight's Get It On has a floral theme. Lilly Allen or Heather Small? You decide...

Wednesday:
David of Lewis reminisced on the e-mail about the groups fronted by women that he enjoyed in his youth. The Platters, the Seekers and The Applejacks were on his list, so who'll be on yours? Girls out front is the theme...

Thursday:
Bob in Annan is already raring to go with a big list for tonight's show. It's the GIO top 20 countdown! We'll start with something like 20 Flight Rock and end up with something One love. What comes in between? That's up to you. Let's have your suggestions of the numbers with numbers...

Julie says she's gonna keep bugging you until you play this.
I would spare you that pain.

Play it tonight and I'll get Julie off your back. You know it makes sense!

#2 & #4 Quick work lads but aren't you supposed to leave some for the rest of us?!

It'll take me til wednesday to come up with a couple for this theme so i'll stick with flowers for now...

    TUESDAY

Have we ever had Wishbone Ash played on the show?

How about "Leaf and Stream" from the "Argus" album. Beautiful song with some great guitar work.

    PH

  • Comment number 6.

If you are stuck on thirteen you could of course play "13 Steps Lead Down" by Elvis Costello from the album Brutal Youth.
Alternatively something by the 13th Floor Elevators, maybe "You're gonna miss me", or by Thirteen Senses.
Johnny Cash also recorded a song called "Thirteen" on his American Recordings, but it is not very cheerful! That's four suggestions from my record collection, but I would pick the Elvis Costello one! I have been a Costello fan for 32 years, and last year treated myself to a reissued copy of his Fender Jazzmaster guitar. I also bought all the songbooks and am slowly learning to play some of them.

  • Comment number 7.

    #5 Exactly!

    Tuesday:

'We Don't Need Another Be-Ro' - Tina Turner

  • Comment number 8.

#5 Fear not, guys, after a quick squint through my collection I can see loads of other stuff to suggest. Paulo has indeed beaten me to a few class shouts, so I may just back him for those and add some of my own. Should be a good theme!

  • Comment number 9.

Let me recover from the shock of Thunder Road not being played on Stirring Songs night first!

  • Comment number 10.

    #4

  • Comment number 12.

#7, #8, Guys, spoke to soon, have now got about half of the "set". May be forced to carry on now and try to emulate Paulo!

#9 Norrie, it was a shocking omission, i'm still confused about that whole theme!!

  • Comment number 13.

paul you made some great suggestions this week including Skids, Dylan...did any get on? I have not caught up with it all this week. Is your love in vain was agreat track suggestion and I was playing Street Legal tonight - what a great overlooked album. I had suggested Baby Stop Crying for sax theme which would have been nice.

Still good chance to include some of thes eon themeless night which i am looking forward to.

Enjoy the holiday weekend everyone in case I forget!

  • Comment number 14.

    #6

Do you play air cello along with the Brodsky Quartet tracks?

  • Comment number 15.

    Hah!

Anyone brought up in the space age will be aware that a PROPER countdown includes 'Ignition', 'Zero' and 'We have lift off' in the sequence!

I therefore submit Joan Armatrading's 'Down to Zero' as the song which should close the Thursday show.

    DC in Cellardyke

  • Comment number 16.

#15 DC - That's genius! I second that choice! I call upon all bloggers to support you!

  • Comment number 17.

I'll see your Down To Zero and raise you Less Than Zero.

    Monday

When I'm Through With You - VLA - Energy like U2 had before Bono rose again on the third day

    Tuesday

What On Earth - Blossom Toes - Family forerunners

    Wednesday

Back Street Luv - Curved Air - Sonja Kristina, a perspex violin and no safety net

    Thursday

    7 + 7 Is - Love

14 - Love - Today this represents advanced maths

  • Comment number 18.

#17 Re Back Steet Luv - It won't be played, but I salute your askability! Great track.

  • Comment number 19.

#18. Well, if you're right and that wouldn't be played then I give up...What earthly objection could there be?...is it "bizarre"? :0(

  • Comment number 20.

Just opened up the blog and saw Morningtown Ride by the Seekers, just amazing. A song that I really shouldn't like, but it is wonderful and Judith Durham had / has one of the great voices. Play it Monday or Wednesday, in fact paly it both nights!

Paolo some good shouts, Janis Ian, we should have more of her and I will even forgive the queen track, though here I would prefer it be 39, the only track of their I can actually say I liek listening to, but seven seas is okay.

    #15, 16, 17

Agreed, there has to be zero

Saved by Zero - The Fixx
    Zero - Smashing Pumpkins
    Zero - Yeah Yeah Yeahs

I will now go and think about sonsg I woudl relaly like to hear on Monday, along with Morningtown Ride, Pressure Drop and Promised Land.

  • Comment number 21.

#13 Thanks for the comments Norrie, even with your support I didn't get the Skids or Dylan played. I did get a couple of others so can't complain. The Street Legal album is a favourite of mine too and I'll be looking to get something else from it played soon. Happy Holidays....

  • Comment number 22.

#16 Seein' as any extension of a theme goes... T minus 1 hour & counting, LOL!

  • Comment number 23.

    #2
Didn't mean to jump the gun. just rattled them off the top of my head but there's obviously thousands more.

Re Wishing I was lucky for 13 and Legs for 11 makes me wonder if it would be possible to get from 20 to 0 without actually mentioning any of the numbers.

  • Comment number 24.

#9 - Ah Norrie! Did we go a week without the Boss?? Surely not ;-)

For Tuesday, I know its a soppy/sad one but I still think "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" is a fantastic song. Reminds me of being young and listening to Mum and Dads records.

Streisand on top form as ever and as all my fellow bloggers know, Mr Diamond can do no wrong for me!

    Happy Easter weekend everyone

    Maria :-)

    MONDAY:

A wee collection of songs by artistes I don't think have been played on GIO yet...

    Soundgarden - 'Black Hole Sun'

'Every Night' a Paul McCartney song covered by Phoebe Snow.

'Trouble is a woman' - Julie Reeves

'A sleepin' at the foot of the bed' - Little Jimmy Dickens

The Undisputed Truth - 'Show Time'. Probably difficult to find but well worth it if you can.

Raphael Saadiq - 'Love That girl'

Mickey Jupp - 'Heave To My Hearties'

'Look Over The Hill and Far Away' by The Humblebums is a lovely song - it's OK...It's Gerry Rafferty singing :0)

Kylie Auldist - 'Community Service Announcement (great song - with The Bamboos I think - sounds as if it should have been recorded in the 60s)

and...last but by no means least...it would be very thoughtful if 'Burlesque' by Family could be played...just for Scotch Git :0) (or at least play him some Tull)

  • Comment number 39.

#37. Not sure how recently it was last a theme but, for this slightly different format, the presenting will surely have to be very disciplined if they're to get as far as number one...never mind the zero-songs some people are hopeful of reaching (which reminds me of 'Big Fat Zero' by Graham Parker). So...no chatting about cakes, handbags and what JFE says he's cooking for his tea on Thursday then.

  • Comment number 40.

I like Mickey Jupp's song Joggin' (not walk the doggin').

It may be that short songs have to be selected on Thursday if we're to have our normal ration of infectious laughter/irritating giggles.

    Thursday

Less Than Zero - Declan MacManus and The Jazzmaster

Love Minus Zero - R. Allen Zimmerman

    One - Three Dog Night

Two Kinds Of Teardrops - Del Shannon

    World War Three - DOA

It's Four In The Morning - Faron Young

    5D - The Byrds

Six Years Gone - Georgia Satellites

Seven Days A Week - The Sounds

Eight Days A Week - The Beatles

Engine No. 9 - The Deftones

Ten Cents A Dance - Ella Fitzgerald

Song Eleven Could Take Forever - Ned's Atomic Dustbin

    The Twelve Steps - Spiritualized

Lucky Thirteen - The Smashing Pumpkins

    Fourteen Today - Dan Hill

    Fifteen - Taylor Swift

    Only Sixteen - Craig Douglas

Edge of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks

Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses - Kathy Mattea

    Nineteen Forty One - Nilsson

    FLOWERS:

Please play something by the wonderfully-named jazz singer Blossom Dearie. 'I'm Hip' shows what a good singer she was. The lyrics are witty and would have been perfect for the jive talking theme.

Failing that...another shout for 'Rosie' by Don Partridge (c'mon...anything with a kazoo is worth a play).

  • Comment number 44.

    FLOWERS...

almost forgot The Tiger Lillies - 'Bully Boys' (if you dare...very catchy, but quite odd...but I like it).

    2. 'Two Worlds Collide' - Inspiral Carpets

    1. 'The Number One Song In Heaven' - Sparks.

    0. 'Big Fat Zero' - Graham Parker.

  • Comment number 46.

  • Comment number 53.

Did this come up before? I think I asked my DFad about one of these - did Julie Foulis cover this track....ah no matter. I am listening to a Decemberists concert. Great stuff!

  • Comment number 54.

I think I have heard a few people doing that particular song, but off the top of my head can't remember who!

  • Comment number 55.

I am probably talking rubiish but it has a good video as well

  • Comment number 56.

Yup that's the version I know. Funny lyrics at the end though... I never understood the writer's aversion to left-handed men!

  • Comment number 57.

Not sure next weeks theme challenge is much of an inspiration for anyone tuning in on Monday onwards. It seems that all numbers and flowers have been done, and it's just Friday night.

Perhaps we could have entire evenings devoted to a particular number....

Can't believe that this blog has degenerated into lists. Hardly seems worth the effort posting because all the good tracks seem to have been snapped up....

    HOWEVER

I still want 'New Faces' by The Rolling Stones to be given an airing and Easter Monday seems to be the perfect oppurtunity.

Come on Bryan, GET IT ON!!!!

(Hope the Easter Bunny is good to you)

    DC,

A wee aberration, methinks. Thursday's countdown theme invites everyone to submit a list. I don't have a problem with lists per se, but with the motivation.
Songs which are included simply because the title or the band's name corresponds with the theme drag the show down.
I am not trying to impose my views upon others, merely expressing an opinion.

    Vive la difference!

    Oh, yeah. Happy Easter!

    Happy Easter SG!

D.C/S.G - I can confirm my "countdown" songs are all tracks I haven't heard for ages and love...does that qualify as an acceptable GIO blog in the committee's opinion?! ;-)

I must admit the lists have put me off reading the blog the last few days......sorry folks, you can' please all the people all the time and all that.

#89, Scotch, it's not just Thursday though! And anyway, I was moaning because I couldn't think of anything because all the good songs had already been listed.

#90, Mazzy, I agree entirely with your point about wading through above.

#87 They all have too much time on their hands with nothing better to do than generate lists.

Last time I generated such a big list the ship nearly capsized.

    For themeless Monday how about
"Couldn't get it right" - The Climax Blues Band.

Although I had a playful dig on the subject of long lists earlier in this blog I have followed the debate with interest and would like to make a couple more points on the subject:-

    1. Isn't it possible that a long list could detract from the good content of one show? Lets say someone lists about 15 really high quality tracks; is the GIO team gonnae "name-check" you for more than one of them? Your then hoping that non-bloggers request some of the same songs also, but then I suspect many of them also read the blog and will want to submit "original" requests.

    2. You could do yourself out of hearing your favourite track! This happened to me last week when posting a massive list of just two tracks!!

    3. What does the GIO team think?

Anyway, it was a beautiful sunrise this morning on the way to work, so for the benefit of all those at leisure can I request:-

Let the Sunshine In - Hair Musical

I'm only speaking for myself here and not for others as I was first up with my top 20 list. The themes just happened to go up whilst i was on the blog and I literally just rattled off 20 for a bit of fun (probably due to an obsession with the charts in my younger days). It wasn't meant to get up anyones nose and if I go back to the list i could easily narrow it down to those tracks I actually want to hear. . .

As for other themes, we could all suggest one song per theme and if it doesn't appeal to the GIO team it won't get on. I tend to pick songs I like that fit a theme in the hope that one of them will appeal to GIO. Sometimes it's two or three, sometimes it's half a dozen. If someone has beat me to a good tune I'm happy to second it in the hope it will influence the producers.

But as I say I'm only speaking for myself. Everyone's different and each to their own.. . . which is probably why i enjoy reading the blog. Different personalities, different tastes but all passionate about music.

In fact as a bit of fun if everyone keeps nominating for thursday regardless of what has gone before then come thursday I'll compile the blog top 20 of the most popular selections just for our own interest.

    Morning chaps and chapesses,

My comment about lists was not intended as a criticism of any individual. Of course the Thursday countdown theme lends itself to 20 suggestions (21 if you adhere to my belief that 'Zero' has to be part of any countdown!).

My comment was out of frustration because I couldn't think of any contribution for the other days because they'd been listed already. (Apart from the Stones 'New Faces', Bryan please take note!)

    Looking forward to tonight's show.

Sunrise not so good this side of the country, hopefully the haar will burn off later in the day
