Where did you travel for your programmes?
I was based in Moscow and from there travelled to St. Petersburg, Voronezh (in southern Russia) and Ingushetia.

Five weeks

When?
I'm doing a second series around the middle of 2001.

Were you moved or upset at any point on your recent trip?
Yes.

What caused you to feel like this?
I was both moved and upset by what I saw in Ingushetia: the conditions the Chechen refugees are living in and their state of near-total confusion: they don't know when they'll be able to return home and what to hope for.

Was there anything that gave you hope?
Yes.

What was it?
What has been described as the professionalisation of human rights activity in Russia. There are many NGOs working on particular projects, and there are many young people associated with them.

Describe one of the people you interviewed and what they said.
Yury Schmidt, a well-known human rights lawyer, when talking about judicial reform, was cautious and argued for a step-by-step approach - but then added: "There are things that can wait, and there are things as necessary as air and bread, and these should be made available immediately".

Lydia Semina, who co-ordinates a human rights education programme at the Open Society Institute in Moscow, said that human rights education "teaches people how to make a choice, and thus prepares them for life under freedom".

Has your trip made you think any differently about human rights?
No, not really.
