Salma Zaidi - Hindi

Where did you travel for your programmes?
Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Punjab, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh & Maharashtra in India.

How long were you away for in total?
5 weeks

Are you going back for this project?
Yes

When?
End of March or early April

Were you moved or upset at any point on your recent trip?
Yes

What caused you to feel like this?
I got to hear some very wretched accounts of how people are running from pillar to post in the pursuit of justice.

Was there anything that gave you hope?
Yes

What was it?
People who did not give in. In one case in West Bengal, a woman who was subjected to police atrocities fought for 20 years and ultimately succeeded in bringing the guilty to book.

Describe one of the people you interviewed and what they said.
I talked to a victim of the Bhopal gas leak. On asking her if the compensation would heal her wounds, she said: "No. Who knows if my son were alive, he might have become the Chief Minister of the State."

Has your trip made you think any differently about human rights?
Yes

How?
I've developed a new respect for the feelings of other people. I have become more sympathetic and concerned.
