Mounira Chaib - Arabic

The 成人快手 Arabic service will be developing
a website on human rights. Mounira, who is heading the online project,
previously produced a radio series on human rights.
Where did you travel
to do the series?
I visited the Headquarters of the UN Commission for Human Rights in
Geneva and attended a conference organised by Article 19, the human
rights and press freedom organisation based in London
When did you produce
your series?
June 1998
What was the reason
behind the radio series?
I was produced to mark the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration
on Human Rights
Who did you interview
for the series?
I interviewed Mary Robinson, the former President of Ireland, now
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. I also interviewed Arab ambassadors
both in the UK and in Geneva as well as members of Arab & International
non-governmental organisations such as Amnesty International, Human
Rights Watch, Article 19 and others.
Was there anything
that gave you hope?
Yes. The commitment and determination on the part of human rights
activists, especially those who work in the Arab World. The recent
decision of the USA finally to accept the establishment of an international
criminal court is also a very positive sign.
Did your series
make you think any differently about human rights?
Yes, most definitely. Immediately after the series, I thought I could
tackle a more specific aspect of human rights such as physical disability.
I therefore produced another series of programmes on disability in
the Arab World, viewed as a human rights issue. While making the series,
I met some disabled people who were truly inspiring.
Are you planning
anything special for the web?
Yes. Some sound clips of the programmes will be incorporated in the
Arabic pages that we will have. The audio element is vital and will
add value to the series when put on 成人快手Arabic.com
Do you think putting
a human rights site on the web will be different?
Sure. The site will be there 24 hours a day 7 days a week. And 成人快手Arabic.com
is the leading news site in Arabic on the web. We won recently the
Best News Site Award from Visa International and the traffic has increased
more than 10-fold since our launch in November 2000. .
What would the web
offer that is difficult to have in a radio programme?
The reference material that you wouldn't be able to put on radio either
because it is not suitable for the medium or due to time constraints.
We will also add links to other sites of NGOs and other international
organisations that our users may like to contact or review.
