The pain, the pain

Here's a wise yorkshire saying:
Eat All,
Sup All,
Pay Nowt.
If tha' e'er does owt for nowt -
Allus do it fur yessen.

I am learning from this moral throughout November. What a month it has been. I was really quite healthy until I offered to help Ruthodanort sell her beautiful pictures at the Clickiminn Craft Fair. She said it would be a laugh - and it was. If you consider driving down to Lerwick (metropolis of the sooth) through wind and torrential rain for 2 and a half hours a laugh. She also said "Oh you can stay at Scallowawife's - but its hard to find!". Too right.
The urban metropolis of Scalloway proved too much. I ended up over the bridge in Trondra & then in Burra. Such nice polaces - in the rainy dark. Every farm track in the south mainland was visited by me. Eventually, after being rescued from the wilds of darkest, deepest Shetland by Ruthodanort Mac decided to show how grateful he was for the experience by christening Scallowawife's porch. Such fun.

The day after, Mac decided to show what a gallant guard dog he is by getting into a bit of friendly conversation with some farm dogs. Bad move this was! In pulling him away I ricked my back. It still hurts now. In fact I have discovered the healing power of hot water bottles.

I have learned from this weekend two things:
1. Mac will never be a Crufts winner.
2. Never go south willingly.

Having said that she sold lots of pictures. There's always a bright side.

PS: There's always loads going on in Fetlar. Herman recommends www.fetlar.shetland.sch.uk

Said it to Scallowawife n I'll say it to you - Tusen takk fordi du hjelper jeg. Hope you are listenin to wise council about your back.

Ruthodanort from Unst

so sorry about your back. although only semi responsible, it did happen on my premises. mind you so did Mac's peerie present on the mat... did you not read my blog on back advice - only use ice - never heat! heat only makes it swell and it takes ages to settle. I can't think to use ice in this cold weather - but you must suffer.

scallowawife from on the naughty step

R: I think you mean wise counsel. (Wise council is probably an oxymoron in Shetland.)

A Pedant from Dictionary Corner

point taken Mr/Ms Pedant

Ruthodanort from Unst

'Hear all/See all/Say nowt'........then the rest. Not useful advice in the context of islandblogging - even the Peasant Pedants would give up in the face of such an edict. I like the present r茅gime, Anne's very tolerant of little pecadillos.

Flying Cat from a linguistic coil

Wise council or counsel on this blog? Neither seems appropriate. Muness tells me he's drowning in a sea of good advice. He's alternating heat packs & ice packs.

Herman from Somewhaar

What does Scallowawife mean? Cold weather? Is it freezing down there in the dark and hard to find sooth? Doesn't the sheer number of houses in the urban sprawl keep you warm? In Fetlar the weather is always tropical. (tropical storm that is) See Weather Eye on the Fetlar School Webpages: www.fetlar.shetland.sch.uk/school/weathereye

Muness from Fetlar

The true Yorkshire Quotation is:- Hear all,see all and say nowt. Eat all,sup all and pay nowt, and If tha ivver does owt for nowt alus do it for thissen. Hope that your back is better now.

Claudias from Unst

Wow! Claudius is back. Will we be reading any more Unst Ramblings?

Ruthodanort from Unst

welcome back Claudias!

scallowawife from scottish island

I doubt it sweet Ruth. Being an old Mac user I think different and it seems to generate a lot of flack. I continue to keep an eye on your travels.

Claudias from Unst

Was quoting from memory of an old tea towel in an aged aunt's kitchen in Harrogate. Couldn't remember exactly. Thought no-one would notice. Are you from the right side of the Pennines then? You can't call Ruth sweet though.

Muness from Fetlar

Oh? *looks interested* what may we call her if not sweet?

Flying Cat from terminology tightrope

Right side of the Pennines? Is that right as in right hand side as one studies a conventional map or right as in correct? As one who favours neither red nor white in the conflict of the rosaceae I am reminded of the description of tykes as,"Nobbut scots wi kindness kicked out."

Hyper-Borean from A position of neutrality

Depends which way you look at the map I suppose. My family is from both the right & left sides of the Pennines.

Muness from Fetlar

"Brasso in clutcho intacto" is another wise tyke saying I remember.

Muness from Fetlar

Thanks for the 'welcome back' folks. I did intend to stay away from controversial topics but I must state that the Yorkshire side is the right side of the pennines,Lancashire is therefore on the wrong side. Yorkshire folk have been known to accept the rhyme: Yorkshire born and Yorkshire bred, strong i't arm and weak i't head, knowing full well that they are far wiser than anyone else, Geordies are the Scots with their brains kicked out. Ruth is sweet and pretty, so there.

Claudias from Unst

well we pushed you and you increased Ruth from 'sweet' to 'sweet and pretty' any advance on this - its just like Deal or no Deal?

scallowawife from amused corner

My hubby and his family would argue the toss - Lancs is right, Yorks is wrong!! Me - not fussy, all looks ok to me - apart from the fact that there is NO SEA!!!! I agree with the Ruth fact, although I would have argued that point bitterly when I was younger - sibling rivalry - she's great now and I'd be lost without her!

Rachondarox from Lancashire

Most of us are lost with Ruth! The war of the roses lives.

Muness from Fetlar

Well Claudias - if its like deal or no deal is Ruth worth 拢250,000 or 1p? No lesser bids please or any bids in Norwegian Krona for that matter.

Herman from Outwith Orkney

Keep pushing. Ruth is extremely sweet and pretty. If I was forty years younger I would be chasing her around the island. I wonder if her sister is as pretty?

Claudias from Unst

And forty years older?

Flying Cat from supine in front of the telly

Extremely is it now. well well well. yes - her sister is extremely too. so there.

scallowawife from shetland

So.It's a good job that Rachondarox is down in that horrible county. Two extremely sweet, pretty, lovable ladies on one island would be too much for me.

Claudias from Unst

sooooo.... sweet, pretty AND loveable.....both of them.....extremely toooo, I seeeee... oh and they ain't ladies! more like ladettes..... Deal or no deal?

scallowawife from scottish island

I notice everyone is staying away from the Deal or No Deal value of Ruthodanort.

Muness from Fetlar

By the way Ruth. How come a 'babe magnet' car has no effect in Unst?

Claudias from Unst

Sorry folks, I do not watch telly so I have no idea what Deal or No Deal involves. I do know that a good wife is worth millions. If I was still in the market for a third wife I would certainly be tempted to make a very substantial offer for the sweet, pretty, lovable, exciting Ruth.

Claudias from Unst

I've heard that boats really, erm, float Ruth's boat Claudias.

Herman from Outwith Orkney

My apologies to Muness Views for ruining this thread by calling Ruth bonny. Once again,an innocent remark has created a flood of replies. Seriously folks,I suspect that I am older than Herman.have been celibate for almost as long as Ruth has existed and have as much intention of intruding in her love life as I have of bungee jumping from the Bressay bridge. Love to you all. I will merely spectate in future.

Claudias from Unst

Don't clam up Claudias - you must continue to blog. None of this is personal! (except to Ruth - but that doesn't count) I like the way you've called Ruth bonny. It has a Yorkshire & a Lancashire meaning. In the red rose county its an insult, yet on t'other side its a compliment. Dare I ask which you meant?

Muness from Fetlar

Since when has Muness had any threads in his postings anyway? Disjointed ramblings of a sad old / young man who should know better. Continue Claudias.

Herman from Not Orkney

Further to my post: Well, is Ruth bonny?

Herman from Somewhere else

I never insult a lady or a ladette. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think Ruth is pretty, and have told her so,judge her photos for yourselves.

Claudias from Unst

tonight - I can assure you she is GLOWING....

scallowawife from shetland

You call it glowing? is that Norwegian for something?

Herman from Schloss Soljey

Consort & I met Ruthodanort tonight. Thought I was seeing the Northern Lights again - or was Ruth seeing fireworks??

Soljey from Shetland Mainland

Fireworks? You mean that was the loud banging I could hear at Sumburgh.

Muness from BA Departures
