My name is Hafsa Muhammad. I was brought up in Kano, Northern Nigeria. I’ve four children, aged 10, 8, 7 and 3.
I sing many lullabies in Hausa to my children as they can speak the language. There are so many to choose from but I like ‘Ruwa’ best of all. It’s asking the baby if she likes to be with her Mum or her Dad.
When you sing this lullaby, you’ve got the baby strapped up on your back and you tap the buttocks. This makes the baby feel comfortable and sleepy as you rock back and forward. It’s just a calming repetitive chant that says:
‘Water is flowing away. br>
Where are you taking me? br>
To my mum, to my dad ? br>
Who do you love most - Mum or Dad?’
