LULLABIES They're the first songs we remember from childhood - a link between generations. Click below to hear lullabies from around the world - then add your own.
My name is Maria Esperanza. I was brought up in the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean.
Even though I don’t remember my mother singing ‘Duermete Mi Nino’ to me, it brings memories - more a feeling than anything else so she must have sung it to me when I was little. I definitely heard her sing it to my young brother and sister.
It means, ‘Go to sleep little baby. Aru-u-ruu’. That’s only a sound.
‘Go to sleep my son - but my son like the sun that shines.
Go to sleep my sweetie pie - my moon.
Pedazo de mi corazon.’ It’s more like part of my heart.
I never sang this song to my child because unfortunately in my country we have lost the tradition of singing lullabies. In fact, the only one they sing now is a scary one. It goes like this:
‘Go to sleep, Baby, go to sleep now or the monster is going to come and eat you up.’
It’s awful and I’d never sing that to my little boy
