Interpersonal skills are crucially important in building and maintaining relationships between both staff and customers and staff across departments.

Professional qualities

As well as interpersonal skills there are professional qualities that influence the impression customers form about you and the organisation.

Personal presentation

It is essential that your personal hygiene and appearance are immaculate. If you do not show pride in your appearance, the customer may judge other aspects of the service. This will not present a positive image of the business.

Your work area should be kept clean and tidy. A receptionist working at a desk piled high with files and documents unable to find things will keep the customer waiting and appear inefficient.

The customer may become impatient so relationships may become strained. A waiter鈥檚 station piled high with dirty dishes, near to customers in a restaurant, is another example that does not enhance the dining experience.

Time keeping

Working patterns in the hospitality industry require working in the evenings, at weekends and during holiday times like Christmas. This means that shift work is necessary.

There must be staff available 24/7 as customers expect quality service at all times. This is only possible if staff arrive on time for their shift.

Good time keeping is an important professional quality to ensure departments work efficiently and positive working relationships exist at all times.
