Construction of the new Tesco warehouse

Construction at the new Tesco warehouse

Supermarkets at Teesport

With the economic downturn in full swing, 2009 is hardly a year for major retail investment, but on the banks of the Tees, one of the Big Four supermarkets is building on a breathtaking scale.

If you walk into an Asda store in Scotland, or the North of England and buy anything, aside from food and drink, then the chances are, you have bought something that has passed through Asda/Wal Mart's giant 350,000 sq ft warehouse at Teesport.

The facility was built in 2007 with the idea that, rather than unload your goods at port, put them on a lorry, drive them to your distribution centre, sort them, then put them on another lorry to drive them to your stores, you can have your distribution centre right next to the quayside and save yourself a journey.

If it were to prove successful, the concept was great news for Teesport, which owns acres upon acres of unused brownfield land next to quaysides on both sides of the river Tees.

In 2008, Tesco announced plans for a warehouse that would dwarf what its rival had built.

The 1.2 million sq ft warehouse is scheduled to open in Autumn 2009 and Tesco says it will create 800 jobs for local people and potentially attract other investment to the area.

The idea is already being seen as a success and PD Ports has confirmed it has been approached by other retailers with a view to building distribution centres at the port.
