A new bridge over the Tees

On September 5, 2008, the long awaited second arch was lifted into place on the North Shore footbridge between Stockton and Thornaby, changing the skyline over the Tees forever.

The iconic new footbridge across the River Tees took a huge step closer to completion with the second, largest, arch being lifted into place by the biggest mobile crane in the country.

The bridge is being built in partnership with Stockton Council and its leader Councillor Ken Lupton said:

"This structure is unique in its design and appearance and continues the long tradition of innovative structures spanning the River Tees.

FACTS:

• Total cost of £15m

• Built from 450 tonnes of Corus steel – 290 tonnes in the big arch

• Lift accurate to 4mm

• Large arch 120m, small arch 60m

• Expected to be used by 4,000 people a dayÌý

• Design concept by Expedition Engineering and Spence Associates

• At its highest point, it is 40m above the River Tees

"It has the capacity to promote the Tees Valley and will be another landmark placing Stockton in a strong position to capitalise on the opportunities offered by the University and the North Shore Development."

The bridge links the North Shore development and the Teesdale area.

With the second arch in place, the next step before the bridge opens is to fit theÌýwalkway. The walkway will be concrete with lights fitted into it whcih, say the developers, will make walking across the bridge just as much a spectacle as the bridge itself.

ÌýIt is hoped the bridge will be open to the public early in 2009.
